After going on line, trying to install 20 times and going through live chat with an EA tech (and then a Sr. EA Tech), I had given up hope.  I then tried this solution and it worked.   THanks Jhime!

no luck for me. I'v tried all the numerous solutions you guys have suggested, and nothing seems to work. I've been trying on and off for about two weeks. If it helps, when i do the sudo, i get this error:

 Same error as everyone else, you're running out of VM space (not actual memory). The only thing you can do is to try to free it up. Things you can do:

* (Temporarily) remove extensions such as APE, SIMBL, Instant Hijack Server etc.

* Hold shift while computer is booting. Not likely to help but might.

It's possible to examine the VM space.  Copy the following line into Terminal.app before clicking the final install button in the installer:

vmmap tgInstall | grep " /" | grep -v System | grep -v usr/lib

Make sure to make the terminal window as big as possible first to get a full listing. Perhaps you can spot something there you can remove, but don't start removing stuff in /System or /usr unless you know what you're doing.

Same friggin issue for me. My computer is only 3 months old so I knew before reading this post it wasnt my end. Also when I called EA he said he searched for this issue and no one else reported it. Within 3 seconds I found this thread and told him as much.

IT WOULD BE NICE IF EA ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEGED THIS ISSUE. HINT HINT

After 36 crashes (it showed how many in the error report details after crash) I got it to work. Now I just have to wait the 45 mins it's saying itll take for the install and hope nothing goes wrong in the meantime. Guhhh.

Hey guys I might have found a work around... not sure if it's going to work or not... but first time trying to install this way no crash. Insert game disc. Open up toast or some other application that can make a disc image. Eject Disc, and install from image. Mine didn't crash so far. I'll post in a few to see if it was successful.

It installed successfully. Let my know if this worked for you too.  BTW, it only took me like 5 minutes for the install from the disc image.

no luck with the mounted image. This is getting to be quite a pain. Nothing seems to work. I've been in contact with EA to see if they can fix anything. No luck from them either.

This last one looks a bit different. It's an endless recusion in the date formatter (finally exiting with an error). Perhaps you can try to change your date format to the US one in the "Language & Text" preference panel. It's pretty much a blind shot but better than nothing.

Same here, Im trying to install the game but getting always the same error.
Now I´m going to make a new image but I think it´s hopeless. Is it normal that the installer is always requesting the admin rights? Anyway I hope anyone can give a final solution. At least EA could give a official statement.

EDIT: Now It seems to install (pretty fast)...Hope the game will run without any mistakes.

Have you tried to make simply a "new image"  of your DragonAge2 cd?

Watch out for the new version of MacBook Pro (early 2011): It is equipped with the VGA card Intel HD 3000, which is NOT SUPPORTED to play DA2. What an awful news but it is true (See Gametreemac.com to see more details)!!! But the older version of Macbook Pro (like mine, mid 2009 MacBook Pro, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz, 2GB RAM, Graphics Card NVidia 9400M), which seems to match well with the system requirements of DA2. So anyone faced the problem of installation, this maybe the one of the reason. So the best way for you is try to upgrade your graphic card (seems to be unavailable for the Macbook or iMac series but possible for Mac Pro). Good luck!!!

@Gandino: Normally the speeds of the chips of your iMac should run the game. RAM is surely more than 2 GB. The problem remain is the graphics card. How about it? Which type is it? How much VideoRAM available on it?

I think he might have meant installing it FROM an external Disk drive rather than TO an external hard drive . It worked for me too.

I've had the same problems as everybody else here. A number of failed attempts with identical results. The instal running for a few minutes collecting files and then crashing without installing any of them. I tried copying the whole disk to desktop but trying to run it just gave a message that it couldn't authenticate the installer. The computer is almost new and the disk appears flawless to the eye.

But then I tried his suggestion of using an external DVD drive that plugs in via USB.

BINGO! Instant success.

 Regardless of the particular technical point at which the instal fails I'd suggest that they pretty much all seem to boil down to "Your computer's drive doesn't like the disk".  That's not actually all that rare with games. Over the years I've swapped round drives several times on Windows machines to get a game installed. However, with the iMac I don't have the luxury of being able to do that, even if I did have spare Mac drives lying around.
  
All the solutions posted above that worked, look to be ways of getting around that incompatibility. All things are made to "a tolerance" - true 100% engineering accuracy isn't really achievable - so if your disk is (example only) +1% in one direction and the drive is -1% in the other then the combined difference may push you across the tolerance line, even though both drive and disk would work with ones from other batches.  
   
The things that reportedly worked seem to include:
 
1. Multiple tries until you eventually "get lucky"
  
2. Making a workable copy of the disk and installing from that ( a couple of variations on that theme were reported above).
  
3. Using a different disk drive - i.e. hooking up to an external DVD drive of some kind. I used a USB one that came with a Windows laptop I own.
  
4. Trying another DVD or computer.
   
Good luck. It's a right royal pain, but there do seem to be things that work.

 surprised me that i am not the only one facing problems installing the game into my mac. tried it on my the other wine pc, it installed  smoothly. for mac users, confirmed...toast the disc and install it, it works. this is totally not acceptable from a reputable developer like Bioware. consumers like me purchased the game and need to go through such hassle. <_<
