I'm at the part right after the Deep Roads and here are my thoughts so far in a quick summary.

What I like:

Battle System: I love the new battle system. Fights arn't as boring and the flow of battle is a lot smoother. The menu and branching system is a lot easier to use as well.

Beginning of the game: I think the death of your sibling and Ser Wesley is a climatic start of the game. I also am digging how your sibling's looks change depending on how you customize your character.

Cinematic Scenes: The graphics in this game are great compared to the first game, and so far I am liking the cut scenes.

Also -- FLEMETH AND MORRIGAN REFERENCE! Woot! I love continuation of a story :)

What I dislike

Character Development: I'm kinda worried now... I'm pretty far into the game and I could care less about the characters. You can't talk to them unless you are done with a HUGE mission and there is no "camp" where you can just chat. My main reason in playing Bioware games is for their massive character development, and so far this game has ZIPPO.

I'm not sure if this is going to change later in the game, but come on, it shouldn't take a person 10 hours. This is a major disappointment to me.

Kirkwall: Okay, this is starting to feel like an Assassin's Creed game where you have the same redundent type of missions that you have to complete in order to continue with the story. It's getting old.. :(

Besides, I am kinda getting tired of the same scenary and talking to the same people.

Blargh-- hopefully the story part of the game gets better... it's getting old for me. I really do hope it changes though becasue I LOVE bioware.

What do you guys think?

I think you need to actually visit the characters in their homes and do their quests if you want to have a chance to care about them. (I'm assuming you haven't done that, or much other side content since you are already more than a third of the way through the game.)

I have visited them in their homes and there are dialogue options, but I don't believe I have gotten a quest option for them yet.

Perhaps I have to have a certain amount of friendship or rivalry points?

I have done many side quests that my members have asked me to do for their friends and what not.

Just started. The aim is a bit off. I like how your class determines who gets killed. more to come.

Liked how the weapons upgrade with time too. Thought it was only the armour. Abilities in the different trees are all tempting which means I may end the game without maxing any tree :) Now that you only buy helms or armour for Hawke, they seem to cost a lot this time.

I am suprised to find that after playing around with the character creater, that I have decided to go with the default Lady Hawke. Bioware has created a default character that actually feels very right. Only thing I wish is that you could tamper with the hair and eye colors on the defaults.

Reached Kirkwall. Am enjoying it so far, and that's surprising considering how the opening underwhelmed me in the demo. I'll take that as a good sign.

I'm playing my evil playthrough first, using my evil character from origins. There was a fun reference in Kirkwall where one of the guards referenced the attempt on the warden's life in Awakening--and how if you knew the warden it wasn't a bad idea. Which I loved.

I haven't made it past the character creator, which is typical for me. I'm finding the CC interface annoying, and not really liking any of the presets--everyone looks sort of pudding-faced. As in Origins, it's really difficult to make a decent-looking dark-skinned character, especially when the lighting in the CC looks nothing like the lighting in game.

Downloading the HighRes pack and all the DLC at the moment.

Played pass the character creation and I find the graphics much nicer than the demo.

Voice dialog is a bit too soft... have to turn up speaker volume and tune down other sound effects - a bit annoyed.

While I like to play as Male Hawke... Female Hawke is just so much better  actually like her the best amongst all female characters I have seen thus far - wish my Warden could romance her instead of Morrigan and Leliana :devil:

Oh yes, DA3... can my Warden romance Lady Hawke :innocent:

I'm enjoying it a lot. I've recruited everyone but Sebastian, who will have to wait until after school As I suspected they would be, Merrill, Fenris, and Isabela are my favorites, although I like Carver's doofiness, too. That guy! Anyway, I really, really appreciated that a "charming" line you can choose when talking to Isabela comes across as incredibly lame and douchey and Isabela recognizes that.

I am kinda worried about friendship/rivalry because I am making no real headway with anyone and for every friendship points I gain, I pretty much immediately get some rivalry points. It's early in the game. Hopefully, I start acting more consistent (I mean, I don't FEEL inconsistent, but..) or find some swank gifts. Or enable the console. Who knows what the future holds for Hawke?

(cheating. it holds cheating.)

Loving it so far at about 4 hours in.

I was a bit skeptical, but I always am with games I really look forward to.
Runs smooth on VH with the high res textures, the story and characters are pulling me in, and it's fun to play.

Y'know, when the Technical head posted on Facebook about the lighting, I laughed mentally, because I didn't see it as being a big deal. In-game, it is simply spectacular. I'm playing on DX9, with Medium graphics, and while the surroundings still look unspectacular, the lighting saves it all.

Also, you have the Shepard 'drink and step back from the bar' animation. Whyyyyy do you have that? *prods*

As I already knew, I love the art direction in this game. Everything (barring Aveline's face, but I feel that was intentional) is very pleasing to look at, and a breath of fresh air in today's GRIMDARK DIRTY BROWN MESSY dominated market.

I'm very impressed with the battles so far. My greatest complaint against DA:O was how my deadliest foe was boredom, as I slogged through dozens of repetitive encounters with small groups of weak, unremarkable enemies. In DA II, most of my encounters so far have been far more interesting, with waves of reinforcements coming in and changing things up in an interesting way (oh no, Mage Hawke's perch, previously far away from any enemies, is now swarming with them as they come to reinforce their fallen comrades! Aveline, rescue meeeee!). I don't know if this will stay fresh for the whole game, but so far, so good.

I'm not sure how I feel about the time skips. I like the way it makes it feel as though you're actually working to become the greatest whatever (mage, rogue, warrior) in the land, instead of slaying four dragons in (what feels like, at most) as many months; however, it also feels like you're skipping over some interesting bits: I'd've liked to see at least one or two more missions for the mercenaries/smugglers, or at least've gotten a better description of the intervening time.

It's possible that I'm just missing something, but it feels like the way their handling companion armor reduces much of my loot to junk. As a mage, I have no need for heavy armor, and I can't give it to my companions, so what's the point? I wish/hope that there was/is some way to use that armor, say by using it as an underlay type deal.

I love being able to see my eye color in the character creator! Huge improvement! (over something that seems to be needlessly broken in many games). However, on the pc, I found that, without buttons on either side of the sliders, it was a bit more difficult to do many things. I feel like bioware & bioware associated games (NWN2 I'm looking at you) are slowly building up a collection of standard hair styles, growing with each new  fantasy game, and I'm very much down with that. However, I feel like my control over Hawke's facial features was more limited this time around.

There is no name that doesn't sound silly when followed by "Hawke"

I miss the DA:O camera, so, so very much, and anticipate many frustrated minutes trying to get the right AoE. It may seem strange, but I also miss the DA:O difficulty levels where there was friendly fire on normal and hard (hard being my preferred difficulty level).

By far, though, my biggest complaint is that BioWare didn't arrange it so that school was canceled. Come on guys, are you seriously trying to make me believe you can't even control the weather? :P

Poor Merrill! I take every opportunity to insult her, (playing evil) and she just apologizes for not understanding humans and my friendship meter keeps going up with her!

6 hours in - Only downside is that I have a feeling that the quest are a bit rushed. Like Anders and Fenris... does not feel really like a quest but more like a conversation, then some fighting, then another conversation and done.

Graphics/Art style are very good (at least I like it a lot) compared to DAO - the removal of armor/metal penetrating/shaping boobs alone is a monumental feat for Bioware! Never though I would witness this in this lifetime.

I wont say the combat system is perfect but compared to the pain combat was in DAO - A small leap for Hawke but a huge jump for Dragon Age - it is infinitely better imo.

p/s: NO - there is nothing hack and slash or action oriented about the DA2 combat system, it is simply a speed up DAO combat system - works exactly the same (with improved/flashier animations)

The Good:

- Nightmare is punishing, but not undoable (so far, at least)
- The atmosphere is awesome! When I got to Sundermount I just ran around the camp listening to conversations for fifteen minutes.
- Lighting and character design. Seriously, everyone is gorgeous (well, Bodahn and Sandal are creepy, but that doesn't bother me so much): Lady Hawke, her family, all the companions. Incredible job.
- Family interaction. Conversations with Bethany make me wish I had a little sister
- All the references to Origins
- State indicators. Very useful.

The bad:
- CC is very, very, VERY limiting. Seriously, I had better experience with beta's CC. I think it even had more sliders.
- The interface is really unpleasant. I understand the intention probably was to make it minimalistic so as not to distract people, but... I miss my ornamental fireball AOE indicators and nice painterly icons >_<
- Still can't find where you can see the set bonuses in the inventory.
- Some of the lines Hawke says are just really, really, REALLY awkward.

For all those complaining about being limited to Kirkwall:

You aren't. It's just that instead of the campaign being focused on Ferelden as a whole, with you venturing to smaller areas, with a few small villages and one decent sized city, Dragon Age 2 takes another, familiar approach. It chooses to focus on a huge, multi-district, major city but allows you to wander out of it for certain quest lines.

That sound familiar to anyone? It should. It's the approach taken with Baldur's Gate 2, versus Baldur's Gate 1. So far, I like the design of this game.

And as for the complaints about less dialogue choices, anyone remember all the complaints about multiple choices leading to the same response? The Mass Effect 2 style dialogue system cuts down on that, imo. Instead of picking from 5 selections, 3 or more of which have no impact on the conversation, we just get right to it, picking responses only when necessary. It worked in ME2, and I think it works to great effect here.

Great job, so far guys. Keep it up.

At four hours in...

I don't care.

I don't feel like I know anything about Hawke's motivation, or why he wants to go to the Deep Roads. My family annoys me. The only moment that affected me emotionally was the Anders/Karl subplot; Bethany's death was a big yawn. I was more impacted by Nelaros dying in the Tabris origin story, and he wsas supposed to be someone I'd literally just met.

The one good thing is that I don't feel bad about not being able to play an elf anymore, because the elves are freaky looking. Their heads look way too big for their pencil-like bodies, and the female Dalish in particular look disturbingly young. I could never romance Merrill because I'd feel like a pedophile.

The graphics are hard on my 40-something eyes. As in the demo, I'm finding that there's so much going on, especially in combat, that it's hard for me to visually track.

All of that would be manageable, though, if I felt at all engaged in the storyline. And yes, I'm not that far in...but at a comparable point in Origins, I remember resenting having to get up to eat and do other stuff. This is fun, but I had no trouble shutting down the computer and going out this afternoon.

So far enjoying it greatly on high settings, DX11, High resolution, 4x AA and 16x AS, while it doesn't look as great as other games, it's still impressive looking.

When I was starting it my first concern was whether or not Nightmare would be solo-able again, which was quickly shot down; the challenge level of Nightmare is pretty much perfect.

Also, fought my first few qunari mages, died almost instantly at first. Glad I'm getting punished for not paying attention to quick area of effect charge-up attacks.

Enjoying it more than Origins, at least for now; only thing off-putting is that Hawke doesn't seem nearly as personal as the Warden, although that was expected.
