I think I'm roughly 8 hours in and haven't gone to the Deep Roads yet.

Friendship/Rivalry: This system really needed more refinement. It's not clear when characters will lose or gain rivalry, and I too am having the problem of having characters go back and forth, never going to one end. Except for Carver - he's a brat and doing anything nice for someone else seems to push him towards rivalry. Aveline is okay for the most part, as well, but some of the others don't make a lot of sense. Why does Varric gain rivalry when I agree to escort the Qunari mage out of the city? Why does simply being nice to Anders immediately put you into a conversation in which two choices are to pursue romance and one is to end it - thus gaining rivalry? Little details here and there like that that make the system a bit of a miss for me.
Act 1 is a bit weak, but I understand that it's because of its structure - a bunch of sidequests in order to get money for the conclusion. Hopefully Act 2 shapes up to be better (not there yet) but it is a minor concern.
One other thing is that an indicator of when companions have something new to say would be good. Sometimes I forget to go and check if they have anything new, so being able to chek that elsewhere before "making the rounds" so to speak would have helped.
Combat also was, I think, made a bit too easy - but this is rectified by raising the difficulty, so that's not really an issue.
Regardless, I do like the game overall and I think it's a good product. It's much smoother than DA:O was in terms of gameplay and I really like the art style - I know a lot of people don't, but I think it looks miles better than what DA:O had. The characters seem solid so far and a couple of the quests have been great - namely the Qunari mage escort mentioned above. All in all it's a solid title that's lacking the "wow" factor that Origins had but it's still an enjoyable experience.
Except Carver. He should've been the one to be smashed by the ogre.

I'm actually enjoying it overall. Some complaints, though:

Agreed. I think that this is a great game. It' just when you are the same company that made Mass Effect 2 which has HUGE character development and you make a game where you can only have conversations with your character every couple of hours does it start to disappoint. Not to mention the rivarly and friendship scale is somewhat off the charts. I mostly had people befriend me at the end of the game, it was usually just Merrel that I had a hard time converting. As I stated, good game, major improvements, but when you are known for your story and character development it's kinda disappointing when these opitions are limited.

As far as dislikes,:
I don't like that descriptions of items seems to have disappeared.
I really don't like that there is no way to inspect an item before adding it to inventory.
I do not like the new layout of the inventory and color scheme. Some of the text (as in item material) is EXTREMELY hard to read due to the colors used... GRAY? wtf. And I am viewing it on a 60" HDTV.
I hate that items are class specific and character specific. Yes, I know that was in DA:O, but not to the extent it exists in DA2. I have a large collection of useless items.
I do not like that I do NOT have access to party members (tactics, inventory, etc.) when I am home. This is truly annoying. You would think that home is where you would want to set your party up. Then again, inventory for party members is largely useless anyway...
I don't like not having a second armor slot, like for bows.
I do not like the abilities/talents screen. The tree idea is fine. But the layout is terrible. Everything should be on one screen, so you can see what there is. I spend 5 minutes just selecting a tree, viewing what there is, then unselecting it, going to another tree, selecting that, looking around, then forgetting what was in the first tree, then going back, etc. Seriously, what was wrong with the abilities screen functionality of the first game? I could move around and look at any ability easily. Yes, it wasn't as pretty, but it worked.
Pretty is nice. Bad functionality isn't.
As for the game itself, I need to invest more time. But so far, I've done a lot of wandering around, not much action. And so far, the characters don't seem to be resonating with me. None of them seem particularly likable or interesting, a la Shale, Oghrin, or Morrigan.

I think I'm around twenty-ish hours end and I just finished Act II. I'm skipping some side quest here and there because there are things my character just won't do. Even though she's a Blood Mage. She has some standards. Like she always donates to the Chantry.
