My game is crashing too, I can't get past the torch appearing in the very first cutscene.
Specs :
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit
DirectX : 11.0
GeForce GTX 260M
Driver Version : 186.19
I have settings set on 'High' and 4x Anti-Aliasing.
I get the standard Windows error message but nothing else.

That's interesting, Corti. I tried running the game using DX9, but no dice.
Why is it so hard to make things that work with DX11? It seems like a lot of games are having issues with it. F***ing Microsoft >:0

Wow. Random crashing on cutscenes for me as well. I guess for now I'll go with lower settings or DX 10. I hope this is fixed soon...

Also... after clicking the last two checkboxes in the "graphics" menu I freeze on looting. Bioware, this is beta quality...

This is beyond silly.
I cant even stay in for more than 3 minutes without crashing, via a cutscene or just in game. With green "jagged" arrows on the screen, then a immediate crash.
I've yet to try DX9, but I shoudnt have too :| Guess I will and see.
Specs;
Win7 64 bit
EVGA GTX 570 SC Edition
1000 Watt Corsair PSU
i7 860 (OC'ed)
8 Gig of Ram (OC'ed)
Latest Nvidia drivers (Beta, tried the current release verison as well)
WTB Patch :/

Update. I realized my primary drive was full and my ATI driver was outdated. I updated my ATI driver, cleared out 2.5 G of free space and installed the high resolution textures. Not sure which one it was that fixed my problem, but I'm running great now.

FYI I updated my graphics drivers to the Beta drivers and it is much better. However, I have this thing called "work" that is limiting my trouble shooting.

For most people updating to the newest drivers fixes this issue but obviously not everyone. We're aware of the breadth of the DX11 issues and are looking in to it. In the mean time, update your drivers and if it still doesn't work you'll have to stick it out in DX9 in the mean time.

Same problem with ATI card. First time it crashed on the first battle scene. Second time - on ogre. Updating drivers didn't help, but switching from DirectX11 to DirectX9 seems to help (so far). It's not a huge setback, but everything looks so much smoother with DirectX11

I had the same app crash error as other here with Windows 7 32 bit. Switching to Direct X 9 seems to have fixed things. Thanks for the tip

I haven't had a crash since I started using the high-res texture pack and switched to fullscreen mode. Made it all the way to Kirkwall with a new character without problems.

It looks like the same problem in DAO to me. When I set the affinity to core 1 or to use directx 9 DA2 would be fine. Otherwise random crash would happen within 10 mins in game, just like DAO. And this time the problem seems to be even worse which it crashes and I have to hit restart, whereas the crashes in DAO would only go back to desktop...

Erk. That cutscene about getting to Kirkwall keeps making me crash. And it's always right where the boats appear too. I'm pretty sure my game crashed at the flames in the beginning too, but I skipped over it that time.

I've been crashing myself in a very specific location. Whenever I start a new game, it crashes at the part in the exaggerated scene where the dragon shows up. This also results in a 50% chance of my Video Card not working unless I leave the computer off for about 15 minutes. After the first two crashes (I thought the first was a fluke) I tried updating my ATI drivers to the newest ones, but that didn't help. I'm going to try switching to DX9 next to see if that helps.

I got it to work! Disabling DX9 worked. Hopefully my 2nd playthrough I'll be able to play with the graphics jacked up, but for now I'm happy.

yep when u change it to dx9 ver all works perfectly very upset with bioware rush the product before fully tested it
1)dx11 driver not proper (have to download a nvidia beta just to play ) WTF
2)on launch day I still have to download the high texture pack 1gb size (lucky i have a high speed broadband ) what about people who still have slow line
I just change my graphic to GTX580 from ati 5870 just because DA2 use dx11 feature (yes there a re still other game that have dx11 feature) but hey this is BIOWARE they reputation is to release AAA title never let me down since KOTOR
very very bad BIOWARE pls improve

Thanks for the reply Luke. Running the game with DX9 and turning off VSync seems to alleviate most of the issues (And seems to improve framerate a bit, which is interesting.). I'm currently about ten hours into the game, and everything seems to be running smoothly. I know BW is working on a solution to the DX11 issues, and I appreciate the help.

I installed the latest ATI drivers in the sticky post and everything works fine. I ran the game all night in dx11 and didn't even lag

I'm affraid I ran into the same problems:
Win 7 64b
1 GB Nvidia
I've tried different settings, but no dice: The game keeps on crashing at the same point: The cut-scene after desigining your appereance.
Doesn't EA have a quality department and is it using it's customers as such? I thought only MS did that...
Because of these problems I haven't played Dragon Age II, but I'm already very dissapointed!

This was exactly my problem, and like many others it was solved by switching back to Direct X 9.chance567 wrote...

I would definitely recommend updating graphic drivers to everyone (and don't just use Windows to try to figure it out! Go to your graphics card maker's website and figure it out there - Windows is horrible at that sort of thing), but also be aware that MANY graphics cards simply do not support Direct X 11. My PC is like 6 months old and my graphics card, as I just discovered, cannot ever play Direct X 11 stuff. The update to the drivers made it so that at least it would downgrade on the fly, but otherwise Direct X 11 would cause my game to crash.
Also I'd just like to state how frustrating it is to have the game crash AFTER you spend all your time customizing your character's look but BEFORE you can actually save the game... /sigh

I just ran into this error today. My system is about the same as all the others I noticed while reading this thread:
Windows 7 64 bit
ATI Radeon 6950
intel i5 2500
etc - I don't know what all is relevant outside of posting dxdiag.txt
Anyway, switching to DX9 only delays the freeze and crash, and makes it less severe. Nothing in particular seems to trigger the crash. Oddly, the launcher reports that there is a new driver version available, and there is not. I checked using Steam and using the ATI website and both say I have the most recent drivers.
So it's just another data point.
