For SOME reason Dragon Age 2 changes the settings in Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilies/)- not the output, but the format. I have it set to 44.1kHz 2-Channel 16-bit, which works- I HEAR Dragon Age 2 in the background right now as I write this and after I changed it back to my settings, but upon EVERY launch so far, Dragon Age 2 changes my settings to 48kHz which does NOT work!

I was wondering why I couldn't hear anything in Dragon Age 2. My audio out is set to the Digital Optical Audio/TOSLINK on my 2009 MacPro 4,1 to my DTT3500 surround sound setup. The visuals aren't a problem (I've a Radeon 5870) but, as of this writing I haven't played one bit.

It's not really a fix but the only work-around is to launch Audio MIDI Setup first and, after clicking Play in Dragon Age 2's launcher screen, press the Cmd-Tab combo to switch apps, change to the working setting and switch back to Dragon Age 2.

Did it get resolved? I suspect the didn't test the Tos link and external surrond much huh?
Did you try changing the audio setting in the game, perhaps that will resolve it?

I did try changing the audio settings in-game, I'd rather change the settings back and forth in-game than switch applications.
Yes, I'm gathering they didn't do much TOSLINK/Surround sound testing, they must assume most Mac gamers utilize Apple's crappy, built-in speaker or, at best, settle for minijack stereo.
And no, this has not been resolved. Perhaps after they hammer out problems with the PC version.

It would appear to now be a Cider issue with my setup because I recently borrowed back the gamepad I gave to my nephew to try out Prince of Persia with it... lo and behold I heard nothing! It turned out that this game, too, while never before, changed the audio format upon launch to 48kHz from my 44.1kHz in Audio MIDI Setup. I have no idea what to do about this other than to now change my audio-out option to the [analogue] Line-Out because using Command-Tab as I do with DA2 doesn't work with PoP- when I switch back I get a solid black screen! *sigh!* Thank God I have the Line-Out cables hooked up to the DTT3500 amp, too so it still sounds good.

I hope that for DA3 they make Mac a 1st platform for development like Valve did.

...I won't hold my breath. They want minimum investment, maximum return.

We looked into this as part of the upcoming patch but it unfortunately appears to be an Apple issue, likely due to some re-architecture of CoreAudio done for Snow Leopard. As you've already found with Prince of Persia, this resetting of the audio isn't specific to Dragon Age.
On the bright side, the Transgaming team has filed a bug with Apple so hopefully it will be fixed in an upcoming Mac OS X release.

I understand it's an Apple-side bug but I wanted to update that no work-around is implemented in the 1.03 update. Is there a thread for how this runs in OS X 10.7?
EDIT: This bug is still around for 10.7 and the 10.7.1 update. According to this Apple Support Knowledge Base article the 10.7.1 update resolves an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out. I guess they fixed some other audio bug...
