For those wondering, I believe the mabari is part of the Black Emporium DLC. If you have that, you'll start the game (the real story, not the fanciful start) with your faithful mabari summoned, a la a ranger pet in DA:O. The mabari is initially simply "Dog" but when you gain access to Gamlen's house early on in the meat of the game you will be able to have a dialog in which you are able to rename your mabari.

I generally name mine "Keg" which is what my first dwarf in DA:O named his, and the name's just persisted across characters (and now games!) ever since.

How early and often does your faithful mabari get kill't?

Arcas. I was going to name my real puppy that due to his extraordinary resemblance to a bear cub but not one person in my entire family could both remember and pronounce the name so I gave it to my mabari instead.

More importantly, how the heck do you get hit to spawn? Saw him only in the prologue and Gamlen's house but he just won't appear no matter how many times I am hitting the Dog" ability button. :/
