In my first playthrough I stayed with Allister and picked some other front line fighter. I thought that the armor and weapon choices made them more viable and, basically, stronger. In my second playthrough, I wanted to use different characters, but I don't want to hamper myself. Can a party with the dog and shale make it to the end or are they too weak?
Do shale and the dog suck?

Get the dog high enough to use Overwhelm and you've got your very own I win button.

I haven't used the dog much but since I have picked up shale i haven't stoped using him. He's pretty tough

shale pretty much owns in my party, i keep him in DPS mode usually and he has a nice knockdown and a great AOE that doesnt have friendly fire

I used the Dog up until I got Shale. Both are made of win if you ask me. Shale's crystals with their elemental damage/resistance are a godsend in some fights too.

Shale is a viable tank on nightmare.

The Dog (Mangle) is pretty good --DPS beast irpunny-- but I've been less than impressed with Shale so far.
His AoE skills are nice, and he can go from Tank to DPS with a mode switch, but I've found Allistair to be the better tank, and either Sten or Dog to be a better melee DPS. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
My experience of course, your own mileage may vary. Though I like the "Pigeon Crap!" line when you deselect him, very funny.

Set the dog's top tactic to use overwhelm on enemy mages. ****ing hilarious.

What AOE is that? My Shale does full damage to party when he aoes...

Shale has insane resistances. If you want to tank a dragon, arch demon or whatever else without cheesing it with force field then he's you man, er, kind of. Note, get him before you do the dwarven campaign.

Lol, I thought I was the only one who unleashed the dog on the mages
Right now on hard difficulty, I am almost always running with Alistair, my dog, and Wynne... and it's great. I didn't use Shale very much, I thought he required too much babysitting with all his different modes and such.
Get the dog to overwhelm mages, and howl stun everyone else, he's great! (he's particularly good at this mage thing because I believe he is the fastest mover that you can have in your party, so it's easier to close the distance)

Shale is an excellent tank in my experience. Just level up nothing but his constitution... I haven't used the dog much to get a feeling for his abilities though.

Dog is very good. Just after Lothering he's probably better then any warrior/rogue. His lack of abilities/equipment, however, means he scales poorly.
Overpower is amazing, though.

Both are exceptionally good and bring a lot to the party. Shale though is an absolute beast as a tank.

Haven't used Dog, but Shale is cool as a character and she's powerful (and versatile) as a companion.

Yea Sten was the best on the first playthrough, I gave him a 2 handed sword with 3 rune slots, each with +5 runes. Unstoppable. Just wanted to try someone different.

Shale is so good I've decided not to use her to avoid trivializing the game (same with more than one mage in the party).
A typical encounter with a properly leveled Shale VS a group of enemies:
Ranged AoE paralyze -> Ranged AoE DoT -> Ranged AoE -> Switch to melee mode -> Run in and AoE some more -> Switch to tanking -> AoE stun -> Taunt what's left and finish off.
Shale is an all-in-one character.
Dog isn't spectacular until he gets Overwhelm. Think of it as an extra Crushing Prison if you want...

I just downloaded Shale so I can't say anything about him yet but the dog's very useful. Sten, however, goes down every single time I use him as tank. Alistair's much better (and a nicer person).

I thought the same, but he can't scale THAT poorly; its not like there's an insane amount of uber epic loot in the game for your characters either...ComTrav wrote...

Dog doesn't scale that terribly at all. Sure you eventually max him out, but his usefulness isn;t in having 462346523 abilities, it is in having a couple really really good ones.
Lets be honest, at level 20 were you really using all of you warrior's abilities? Your mages? At level 18 as a primal mage how often do you really beak out the rank 1 fire cone?

Shale. In. No. Way. Whatsoever. Sucks.
He is an amazing tank and i love his dialogue and his massive hatred for birds.

All the time? Common, it's a fwoosh on command.

I tank things and Shale pushes them around. Whats more fun than that? Gotta love seeing an ogre stumble back cause a rock just punched it in the junk (... they are affected by knockbacks right? I might be going crazy). Gah now I want to see Shale and three archers use the knockback abilities on a group of enemies...
I would have used Dog but I ran out of party slots. Can't pass up a locked chest

Shale is great, especially when you level him up enough to unlock lots of his ability trees.
Among his sustainable abilities, he can pretty much do it all. By default he has high constitution, ideal for soaking up damage. Then by turning on Pulverizing Blows, you can have him deal extra damage, Stoneheart for full-on tanking, Rock Mastery for some crowd control skills, or turn on his aura sustainable for party buffs.
Plus, Shale's dialog is extremely entertaining

Dog is sick dawg!
The HOWL stuns enemies and lines them up perfectly for a Cone of Cold, Lightning Spread combo!
