Shale is a bit underused in my game as well but I do try to take her along when I can. She's quite versatile and can fill more than few roles at any given time.
Do shale and the dog suck?

The dog is possibly one of the most useless characters ever. Apart from overwhelm it really doesn't do much for you and has no banter. Gets you cool things but that's it.

The dog is very useful as a support and damage character. His stuns and overwhelm abilities come in very, very handy. That said I quit using him after a while to have more talkative companions

As a heads up, I'm primarily using the dog on my first play through in one of my party slots all the time, and now and again he still does do some pretty nifty stuff. The other party members interact with him too, so while he has less interaction, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Taking the dog into Denerim Market District made my day.

Dog is cool, but not at the expense of a companion slot.
Have less than zero interest in Shale, wish all that dev effort had gone into expanding the normal gameplay from the more than sufficient number of companions.

And yeah the Dog should always be with you regardless, silly that you have to take up a character spot for it.

But even if you tried pinning a gender on Shale, I'd say he's male. His voice is too deep to be female in my opinion.
Bah, forget this. Henceforth, I will just refer to Shale as an "it."

Dog is a utility charactor, but he's great at it.

I am of course working with shale, i know they did not design a worthless character, so there must be something i need to do in tactics, or at least get a better understanding of why he seems so weak when tanking.
i will look into making him a dps fighter rather than a tank.

Since when is Shale female o.O ? I mean, being a golem, they're non-human, dwarven-made creations, and don't have any kind of...reproductive organs, so technically Shale is neither.

Anyway I think it's a little disappointing that the dog can basically be replaced by a ranger's pets.
Shale is a decent tank. Alistair is better just because he gets access to all of the good gear which will give him better stats (configuring gear is also more fun for me.) But Shale has certain aoe abilities that can be useful to make up for this (although they are situational.)

a) awesome crowd control
c) good artillery lolz
d) ridiculous and incredible support
e) probly most awesome dialogues in game
I'm feeling a bit that BioWare overpowered Shale intendly as payable DLC
