The dog is very useful as a support and damage character. His stuns and overwhelm abilities come in very, very handy. That said I quit using him after a while to have more talkative companions :D

Shale is a bit underused in my game as well but I do try to take her along when I can. She's quite versatile and can fill more than few roles at any given time.

I was disappointed with upgrade opportunities for the dog, so by the time i actually started finding collars and war paint, i had stopped using him. Shale on the other hand, as was mentioned, can be customized to take advantage of just about any fight. By the time you acquire shale, you have several crystals to choose from.

I think it all depends on who you are. IF you need a good (off-)tank you can't beat Shale. All that con and str, I mean really? For my mage, Shale is a must have. I haven't tried rogue yet but with my warrior, I'm trying to compete with a golem for dsp who is scoring upwards of 100 per hit.

The dog is possibly one of the most useless characters ever. Apart from overwhelm it really doesn't do much for you and has no banter. Gets you cool things but that's it.

Pretty sure you can get overwhelm by going Ranger as well.

As a heads up, I'm primarily using the dog on my first play through in one of my party slots all the time, and now and again he still does do some pretty nifty stuff. The other party members interact with him too, so while he has less interaction, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Taking the dog into Denerim Market District made my day.

Shale never died on me the entire game, only have to heal him sometimes in boss battles, he's an awsome tank :)

If you could take these creatures along for free, then I'd have them in my party.

Dog is cool, but not at the expense of a companion slot.

Have less than zero interest in Shale, wish all that dev effort had gone into expanding the normal gameplay from the more than sufficient number of companions.

why do some of you think shale is a female?

Shayle's voice and personality alone earned her a spot in my first playthrough. When you first activate the golem you expect it to be like RAWR GOLEM SMASH but instead its all articulate and cynical and quite hilarious.

And yeah the Dog should always be with you regardless, silly that you have to take up a character spot for it.

Shale is an awesome tank, holds aggro well, and you don't have to spend all your money on gearing them like you do Alistair or the other tank.

Shale is hands down the best tank in the game, even better than a PC tank. Crazy health regen, tons of health, good DPS and holds aggro like a champ. If you pick up force field, Shale hold aggro so well that you can activate stone aura, then cast force field on her and she will regen back to full health while holding all aggro.

Since when is Shale female o.O ? I mean, being a golem, they're non-human, dwarven-made creations, and don't have any kind of...reproductive organs, so technically Shale is neither.

But even if you tried pinning a gender on Shale, I'd say he's male. His voice is too deep to be female in my opinion.

Bah, forget this. Henceforth, I will just refer to Shale as an "it." :)

Dog is actually pretty badass if used right. Remember, he has a good AoE stuf, a beautiful thing to have on a front line character, which hits most of the time for a decent duration. More than that, Charge is great for dropping mages to the ground from a distanc, AND gets him in there to start doing proper damage to it.

Dog is a utility charactor, but he's great at it.

I found the dog quite helpfull, and shale utterly useless.

I am of course working with shale, i know they did not design a worthless character, so there must be something i need to do in tactics, or at least get a better understanding of why he seems so weak when tanking.

i will look into making him a dps fighter rather than a tank.

<<Shale Spoilers>>

Shale is, in fact, female. ;) Bring her along when you do the Orzammar quest line.

Don't post spoilers here... you're not impressing anyone.

Anyway I think it's a little disappointing that the dog can basically be replaced by a ranger's pets.

Shale is a decent tank.  Alistair is better just because he gets access to all of the good gear which will give him better stats (configuring gear is also more fun for me.)  But Shale has certain aoe abilities that can be useful to make up for this (although they are situational.)

Putting a bunch of line breaks doesn't help either since it just appears right above the next person's post.

Shale is a good tank, and she's fun to have around. She's definitely a diva...some of the things she says literally make me smile. :)

Shale is not only an awesome tank. She has also:
a) awesome crowd control
B) raw dps
c) good artillery lolz
d) ridiculous and incredible support
e) probly most awesome dialogues in game

I'm feeling a bit that BioWare overpowered Shale intendly as payable DLC :P.

I didn't use either...I didn't use Alistair much either due to the fact that my character was almost exactly like him (maxed out on shield). I may use Shale the next time around although I didn't like the crystals I found for her....pretty boring.

I have  Shale as my primary tank.  Between fast health regen, aoe taunt/stuns, customizable damage resist gear and access to warrior dps abilities I can't imagine how someone could think she sucks.

Bellow + forcefield + blizzard/cone of cold = win.

The dog (I call him Muttley ;) ) is awesome. A few times my party has wiped apart from the dog who has then ripped through remaining enemies singly handed (pawed).
