both a waste of partymember slots.

Usefullness aside, I rather not have something as outlandish as a golem in my party, and a dog doesnt seem worthy of a full party slot. Would have served better as some sort of animal companion when made a little weaker.

I would rather see Sten getting a health bonus because of his race to be able to absorb more damage, and an arcane warrior mage and an additional rogue in the party. A rogue thats available quite early. Takes a long time to gain a rogue when your character is not one, and a more neutral rogue might be welcome to avoid conflicts with the group.

Shale is the single most versatile member of a party you can get.. He can be a tank, a melee damage dealer, or a archer.. He is amazing.

Well here is a stat by stat comparrison of Allistair and Shale:

Shale at level 19

Strength - 48
Dexterity - 13
Willpower - 10
Magic - 10
Cunning - 10
Constitution - 42 + 8 =  50

433 Health
155 Stamina
20.6% Fatigue

43 Armor
48 Defense
81 Attack
39.8 Damage

Equipment:

Large Brilliant Natural Crystal
Small Brilliant Natural Crystal

Allitstair at level 19:

Strength - 44
Dexterity - 28
Willpower - 16
Magic - 14
Cunning - 15
Constitution - 25

308 Health
220 Stamina
19.9% Fatigue

34 Armor
81 Defense
96 Attack
41.6 Damage

Equipment: Heavy Plate (Dragonbone)

Stat wise,  Shale has more health and armor while allistair has more defense and stamina. Shale doesn't need dexterity for her skills so that allows more points into constitution for more health. The unseen stat here is the health regen. Small natural crystals grant up to +6 to combat health regen and Large ice crystals grant up to +1 health regen, plus up to +20% on healing effects. Regenerating burst is also an AoE stun/taunt that boosts heath regen. Basically once Shale does regenerating burst, all mobs affected by it are going to stick to her like glue. Then cast force field on her and bomb the mobs with AoE spells, none of them will change targets.

Shale is amazing. I'm not sure about the dog because I didn't use him much. I used shale as a tank with fantastic results. I switched back to Alistair as the tank after I got the juggernaut set and a very excellent grey warden shield.

My thinking is that Shale excells at gaining threat to big groups and stunning big groups, while Alistair excels at damage reduction, although shale's damage reduction is nothing to scoff at, shhe doesn't have the ability to use a sheild, high armor values and runes. I preferred Alistair for the late content tanking, but I tanked with Shale for the middle content of the game. Shale is astonishing at taking threat and her biggest disadvantage is that she's very vulnerable to getting knocked down.

Shale and the Dog are the two best melee fighters in the game, full stop.

Shale has higher damage per hit and defense than anyone else in the game (yes, both at once) and after like 2 points in Constitution, you can sink all the dog's points into str and dex, making it really good at dodging with insane damage, quick attacks, and arguably some of the best combat skills in the game.

I like the dog just for emotional reasons, lol, but powered up he's pretty tough. If you get Shale outfitted with clear or brilliant crystals he can be a monster, especially if you keep the crystals with you and swap them for different encounters (massive resistance to spirit, fire, electricity etc damage plus massive damage in whatever element is most destructive to the enemies). Neither is useless at all. If you get tired of some of your party's banter, the dog is good at keeping his mouth shut. Plus he's pretty helpful with some landmarks...

The answer is : It was a she. And it will be a she again.
Dog is quite funny, but lack of skills. Shale is really powerful, but lack of the alistair jokes and shiny armor.

If you need more skills than dread howl and overpower, you're playing the game wrong.

Shale and the Dog are two of favorite characters so far! The dog's AOE Stun is great, Shale's flexibility is priceless. Everytime I lose my tank, Shale just switches to his tank ability and picks up aggro.

I also love using both of these for tearing up ranged. The dog can cover the distance in a heartbeat (most people seem to overlook his movement speed). And if there's a group of archers, I giggle with glee when I send shale over there to stand in the middle of them and Quake them all to death with a single attack.

Shale: Can go either the most powerful meleer possible...the most powerful ranged damage possible, or the most powerful tank possible...all with a click of a button...

Dog: No overpower...no gain...it's cute...fuzzy...wags its tail...sits...rolls over...finds things for you...but it is really a replacement since you start out with only 3 party members...with the dog it'd be 4 =)

One of the reasons I like the dog is less micro management. He only has a few skills so with a few tactic adjustments you pretty much do not even have to do anything with him leaving you to focus on your other 3. People are also forgetting he does have an auto crit attack good for shattering. So for the record he has an AoE Stun, a knockdown, an auto crit attack, and overwhelm. I don't know about you but after using 4 abilities on a character using stamina I am tapped out.

Another thing to note is that the dog doesn't need to have any sustained abilities which means less fatigue and more stamina to play with.

Revik, I completely agree with your assessment of the dog. No fluff, just quality talents and straightforward tactics. I find he let's me focus on other characters for more interesting strategies.

I have Dogmeat set to defensive, so he stays near my rogue. His tactics direct him to attack my target, using Overwhelm or Charge if it's a mage. If we're surrounded, he stuns the crowd. This works well and looks great, and I almost never have to direct him myself. Good dog! :)

The conclusion it seems is that Shale and yer Dog (called mine Brutus, like anyone cares, lol) are absolutely and completely...USEFUL! One is an all around uber rock beast, and one requires little direction but offers a complete tide-turning set of utility and doesn't talk much. Plus, your Dog loves you...no matter what. Or at least my Brutus does.

I've had the dog in my party for almost an entire game (I don't intend to remove him from the party, but I have some of the finishing battle left; also I left him out when I had to take a specific other party member along for certain parts of the game), and he definitely scales up very well. The area stun still works, he does incredible damage, and he can kill some yellow mages all on his own. I pretty much only have to send an arrow the same way if I want to make sure. The dog is at least as useful as Leliana a.k.a. the walking stun trap that can one-shot ogres (note: I haven't tried the one-shotting ogres bit with her yet, but my rogue pc can do that with AoS if I get really lucky or it's a very weak ogre, so she should be able to do it too. And Captivating Song in a doorway is pure win).

I have a master ranger rogue and I don't think the wolf ever gets overwhelm. You can set it up to use it (and dread howl) in tactics but it doesn't seem to actually have the ability and it doesn't show up in the quickbar either...

Golem ain't going in my party.  Dog as a weaker animal companion would've ruled, opportunity missed Bioware.

Not really missed, you can have weak animal companion wolf if you play a ranger specced rogue. Compared to the dog, it's pretty much crap though but then it's a free fifth party member (which disappears when you zone... that was one silly decision to make it do that).

FIRST OFF, Shale is a she, or at least WAS a she.

And she is amazing! I built her defense/archery up. Chuck a rock at um, then grab all the aggro and instant win!

To bad the dumb b**** betrayed me and all of dwarfdom.

Shale is awesome if you need a tank for a particularly hard single mob such as Dragons. Just give him a 40% resist crystal towards the enemy's element and have him tank with stoneheart on. His regeneration with stone heart makes him last a little longer than Alistair for such encounters. Tacking on an elemental balm and most 1 on 1 encounters become pretty simple.

I can't say much about the dog since I usually run with two mages and that provides plenty of CC utilities at range. My 3rd member is usually a DPS char (in which sten, Oghren, Zevran outdamages dog by a large margin with gear).

Equipment scaling is the biggest problem for both chars since they each only have two slots. Regardless of what you do with shale/dog they will not out-tank a fully decked out Alistair (maxed shield skills) with tier 6-7 armor and 20% resist rings.
