is the better staff if you have certain builds... for mages is a bit tricky to define the "best" equipement... they use various forms of elemental damage, they can be just healers or CCers, they can use blood magic or not (not to say AW)... in the end is the best if it works the best with your build.
the preorder staff (for example) is way better than that for a fire centric user, similar can be said for the robe in denerim, it is the one that cost the most and is the best defensive robe, but for someone who prefer spell potency and mana regen is not that good

why is the preorder staff better?
this staff has like +6 willpower and +6 spellpower
final reason has +15% fire damage, but this has +10% fire and +10% spirit

As a Blood Mage I liked Avernus' robe through mid-game. I finally broke down and bought that expensive one in Denerim. And the Staff of the Magister Lords. Still wore the Libertarian cowl from Mages Tower quest, through til the end.

No.
As for the Staff, it depends on your build, which was the point. For a Blood Mage that focuses on fire damage and doesn't use spirit damage spells no, it's not better, losing 3 spellpower and 5% fire damage for willpower he can't use, mana regeneration he doesn't need, and spirit damage he can't use, is not a good tradeoff. For a Mage that's not using Blood Magic and especially one that is using a lot of spirit damage it's obviously much better. There's no one right answer.
Of course even if it is better you also have to consider if it's good enough to be worth the money. You might get more use out of upgrading some other item instead.

if you have spirit healer BM is a great complement... but beware that it can be a bit tricky as you have just 1 heal working on you, still if you get used to it bm+sh is an extremely powerfull combo

I've been using the SAME STAFF for like... FOREVER!
A tier 1 enchanters staff for the +1 magic & +3% fire/cold/thunder damages
Wynne has a tier 5 one , but its red and only diff is its normal hits do more dmg
Where THE HELL is a better staff? I really want a new/better staff
Also I've been wearing the tevinter mage robes for like EVER too , +2 mana regen and some + spellpower on it , but I don't really like how it looks
If anyone could direct me to some better staff and robe I would like that
Oh and boots too... I'm still using tier 1 fade stirders for +1 magic because I've never even found other boots
I'm doing good on rings necklace belt and arms though

Useless , the PCs don't have the sense to handle being a bloodmage
I guess with a bunch of slots you could do activate mode , do spell , deactivate mode and so forth
So many tactic slots that you will either have to have her skip it , or have her skip basically everything else
You realize blood mage spells require you be in blood magic mode?

Not sure why everyone thinks being a Blood Mage means you can ONLY use blood to power your spells...? Simply not true (nor efficient).
Switch back and forth between mana and blood/health. I usually just activate Blood Magic to hit those particular spells or if mana is really low... Otherwise, use mana.
And BTW, if you are playing 'evil,' you can get a decent staff ("Blackened Heartwood" IIR) in the origin levels in the Mages Tower. I kept it through mid-game... Even gave that other 'Winter Staff' (don't remember name or where you get it; radiates cold though) to Morrigan.

Hey that guy sells what seems to be the best mage belt in the game too
If I buy the staff and the belt I have like... 2 gold left though so I'm holding off on the belt for now
Gonna go see if I can find some other nice stuff to buy like tomes or something

Tevinter robe is among the best, if you want to change look you can steal wyn one (
) in keep dlc there is also a decent robe for BM
for staff it all depends by your build and what you use to deal dmg... if you are an ice user there should be a decent one in denerim or in the keep dlc, if you are spirit user there is the magister lord or a staff in the endgame (magister lord is a bit better than that but imo cost too much to be worth untill you try some extreme builds), for lightning thers a decent one in denerim or at your camp
for BM i agree... to switch is pretty effective, altho it depends a bit by the build, with a char i was playing as a normal mage and just switching in the end of fight for sustained healing, with another i was in full BM mode, just switching back to normal when needed... it depends
