Why is there only 'Low' or 'Medium' Graphic settings?

That is even after I installed the high res pack.

I have 4 gigs of RAM and a 8800GTS card, is it because my specs are too low so that the system will not let me select?

Damn it is near unplayable even with low settings and high res disabled, what kind of rig do I need to run this? It seems to be more demanding than crysis.

You need to select the DirectX 11 renderer in the video options to use High or Very High settings. This requires DirectX 11 of course, which is only available for Windows Vista/7. You also need a video card with 1 GB+ video RAM to use the hi-res texture pack.

The 8800GTS is woefully obsolete. Advances in consumer graphics technology have been very fast-paced over the last few years, and even an inexpensive current card will beat the pants off that old 8 series.

You can still play DA2, just don't expect to play it on "high" graphics settings. Even "low" looks pretty awesome if you're used to games from only a few years ago.

I concur with all the previous posters in that your graphics hadware, is letting you down.

A general rule of thumb that I follow with games purchases is,

a) check the requirements on the box / package / website.
B) ignore the 'minimum requirements' if stated, and consider 'recommended' as the actual minimum.

I have a GTS 450 1gig factory overclocked card. Pretty much an entry level card for gaming these days.

Even though it is Direct X 11 capable, the game doesn't run smoothly on the highest settings.

Cheers.

I have a GTX 260M, a mobile card based on the desktop 8800GT, and I can play on High (DX10) just fine, just with SSAO off. But you need either Vista with the right Windows update, or Windows 7 to use High settings with the DX11 renderer.

First, remind me again what "SSAO" is ?

Second, I don't see the original G80 version of the 8800 GT to choose from, but the 8800 GTS listed at GPU Revire is still the one with the G80 core, and it's a less capable card by quite a lot than the G92 cored 8800 GT is.

SSAO is Screen Space Ambient Occlusion. And it depends if it's the G80 (320MB or 640MB) 8800 GTS, or the 512MB G92 8800 GTS.

yup pretty much it, I dont understand why the specs are so high, even if the graphics were highly detailed, the cartoonly meshes takes me out of the allusion of the game. in my opinon highly detailed graphics isnt what makes a game great, its the gameplay, Dragon Age Origins proved that, a masterpiece, showing the genius and great quailty Bioware posses

I have a slower card, the 9600 GT, and the game runs pretty well on medium settings with the high res texture pack installed at 1920x1080. I have to turn off v-sync, though. That took some getting used to.

To answer your original question, High/Very High are only available if you use the Direct X 11 renderer (High requires Direct X 10, Very High requires Direct X 11).

As for low performance, there are a few things you should try:

1) Download the nVidia Beta Drivers (I would imagine in your case they are likely to be the 267.24 version, but use that to find them) - the WHQL drivers are not optimized for Dragon Age 2 at all, and the beta drivers in my experience are both stable and offer a decent improvement (though hopefully the finalised drivers will increase that further).

2) Make sure the Direct X 9 Renderer is being used. The Direct X 11 renderer causes horrible performance even on a lot of high-end nVidia systems currently (this is a known issue being worked on) - however the Direct X 9 performance is fine.

Using an overclocked GTX 260 869MB with the beta drivers I can quite happily use 8xAA at a 1920x1080 resolution with the Medium textures (the highest DX9 textures), high-res texture pack plus 16xAF forced via nVidia inspector as for some reason the option for AF is disabled if you select the DX9 renderer

Isn't the question wether he uses Windows Vista/7, or XP? If he uses XP, DX9 is the best he can do, regardless of his card - and that will limit him to medium settings, isn't it? That said, as of now the game performs far better with the DX9 renderer, and with enabled high res textures looks quite okay.
