God damn, you get so dark sometimes, Bioware. I actually felt physically sick after this quest... Haven't felt like this since A Paragon of Her Kind/Anvil of the Void. I had to take a break after that one...

This. That quest cemented this game as a classic for me., because of the true emotion I felt.

That made you depressed? Carridan wanted death and branka was off her dam rocker. I felt pretty good about killing her and setting Carridan free.

Leandra was pretty looking too. I'm sad she has to died too and wish I could romance her before she gets murdered.

What really bothered me about redcliffe is that they set up this great moral dilemma, kill the boy to free him and stop the undead... Use blood magic and kill someone else for sacrifice to save the boy, or go all the way to the circle of magi and endanger everyone for altrustic reasons. And ruin it by making the goto the circle the only non douche choice. Like the game designer said regarding the mother. If they gave us an option other then her tragic death, we would just treat it as a failure and never use it.

Well I agree. That's why I say what happened to Hawke's mom is diffferent. I don't even want to compare these two because people are going to say at least this time bioware did it right. Which is wrong, because for once, no morale dilemma, and also no choice at all.

I agree they should have expanded it. Save her for a cost, maybe make it so mage Hawke could sustain her unnatural life, make a pact with a demon, something like that.

Ugh, I hate doing this quest.  It's so sick and sad.

Once the emotion fades, I can appreciate it for being a damn good quest.  Hawke showed so much emotion during it.  You can hear the frantic terror in her voice while following the blood trail, the grief as Leandra dies in her arms.  So unbelievably sad.  :crying:

It could have been because I've been sleep-deprived from playing non-stop and it was around 7AM at the time I got to that scene, but I cried so hard at the end of this plot.

I feel like if that was me, I would've wiped my hands with Kirkwall by the end of Act 2, not stayed on for three more years in a city that was turning increasingly into a hellhole. The only reason they went there in the first place was because Leandra wanted to, and in the end Hawke lost her too. Who cares about being famous and influential if it's in a stain on the map like Kirkwall? I'd have taken my riches and moved back to Ferelden, maybe helped them rebuild. There's no more Blight, they like mages, and Carver was already gone. Why even bother staying?

You could just watch the news on TV if you need to feel sad for some reason. For me DA2 had plenty sad moments. In opposite to other people I felt sad about both, Carver and Bethany's death in the prologue. Also about Wesleys. I felt sad about Merril as well. Also about the Arishok since I found him quite likeable and I had no choice than to kill him, well or lose Isabella. I feel bad about many mages and bloodmages. I guess if you don't feel about any of these then you appreciate if something extremely horrible happens that actually manages to touch you  ... somewhere. I just found I got an overdose sadness of the whole game and I am thinking not all people appreciate it. I mean I like the story, despite all it's shortcommings. But some things are simply disappointing and despicable.

This quest made me teary-eyed. Not because I was overly attached to Leandra, but because I was attached to Hawke; I've always been one who was moved to tears more from the reactions/feelings of others than from an event itself, for some reason (no matter how terrible an event may make me feel). I would have been sad over Leandra anyway, but just seeing Hawke holding her as she died...oh man.

Honestly, I'm glad that the death is unavoidable, for reasons others have stated. If there were a way to save Leandra, I really don't think most people would do anything BUT that way (short of her death meaning some odd useful artifact came into Hawke's hands as a result)

And I like that it truly does drive home the fact that mages CAN be dangerous, and sparks a bit of controversy/debate over whether it's better to let these living weapons remain free because they're actual PEOPLE, regardless of an accident of birth, or keep them locked up for the 'greater good of the populace'...and then, with that latter, of course seeing what happens when you push them too far. Because seriously, there was some pretty horrid abuses of power going on: see that one quest with Ser Alrik (I think) where it was implied that a cornered mage girl would be...abused after being made Tranquil. These locked up mages become basically a powderkeg waiting for a spark (or Big Freakin' Magic Bomb of Doom as the case may be).

Apologies for getting rambly-- TL;DR version is that I liked the quest, as sick and sad as it was, and I don't think there should be a way to avoid Leandra's death. Sometimes Hawke just can't save the day, even for those closest to her.

this quest was the second time a game brought tears to my eyes, the first game to do that was final fantasy 7, the point where Aeris died.

Varric is an amazing friend in the game. I loved him.

He was the heart of the group, he really was. The group was like giant happy family and he was always looking out for everyone else.

As always in Bioware games I feel I need a bigger group. So many people I always want to have with me. I need at least a 5 or 6 people group.

Up to that point the game was pretty standard when it came to plot elements and twists, but this was the first time in a while my genre savvy-ness bit me in the ass. I thought that if I let the noble go he'd turn out to be the killer via double plot twist, when I found Leandra the realization was like a punch in the gut. It wasn't that she was dead, it was that she was dead because of my choices and my own stupidity. Well played Bioware.

Absolutely. Varric was the party's mom, and it was incredbily endearing. Him trying to cheer Anders up from his paranoia and descent into madness in Act 3 was terribly sad and touching. I cheered with Varric supported you there. He's a bro mom.

In case you missed it, there is no way to save her. There is nothing you can do right or wrong.

Oh Bioware how you make me depressed. My first playthrough I almost cried when Bethany died (now I'm playing again and she's a Grey Warden) and now Leandra, poor Leandra who NEVER did ANYTHING bad, gets turned into a walking freakshow. I almost threw up when I saw her face and the cuts on her neck (don't make fun I have a wimpy gag-reflex) and I was so happy when I killed the sick bastard >:(

Um.  Did you see the part where I directly mentioned Aveline in my very post, or were you so excited about rushing to point out a supposed hole in what I said that you skipped over it?  She would have said something to you if there were any clues.

As for the note, it could have very well just said "Hey, we need to meet. -Hawke".  We never see the note, after all.

Well, one, it would have needed more then that, or he would have waited around for you to show up.  Two Avaline jumps all over the blood mage for not brining the situation to the Gaurd and then does nothing when confronted with a crime scene.  She doesn't even inspect the body to see if there *are* clues.

Further, remember that she is Watson to your Holmes.

DuPuis was Quentin's student. If you bring Varric with you when you find Leandra's body(if you went there with DuPuis's blood ritual route) then something special happens. Spoiler?

He goes insane with Bianca.

I wasn't even offered to go with him. He just left for Darktown on his own if I offered to help. Should have brought Varric to his mansion?

Oh, this happens if you let Gascard live the first time you meet him? I'll definitely try this on my next playthrough to see this Varric moment. :D

I did let him live. My question is WHERE during the quest it occurs because I didn't have Varric with me and like I said, he just left for Darktown, he never showed up again not even after finding Leandra.
