The whole quest was just bad. It wasn't until I got to Act 3 that I worked out that it was supposed to make you question being sympathetic to mages, when Meredith mentioned it.Until then I hadn't even thought of it in terms of "blood mage killed Hawke's mother", just "crazy guy killed Hawke's mother". Blaming all mages for what Quentin did makes about as much sense as blaming Nathaniel and his sister for killing the Couslands.

Well that sucks.... no way to save mom or go all out Double Dragon, Jimmy and Billy Lee with my warrior brother Carver. (primary motives for my 2nd warrior playthrough :P)

I seriously read every single post here searching for a way to prevent the whole frankinmom debacle..

I was also a bit suprised to find myself slaughtering the entire dalish village (on accident) the 1st time through... Bioware definetly has a dark side. Needless to say I haven't given Merril an inch this round.

I love all games I played from BioWare, ME series and the DA but now... Only up to that part. To be honest I didn't care much for my in-game brother but the sister and now a mother? This part of the game sucked HUGE time. Bethany I was able to go back a huge chunck of the game just leave her behind and not bring her to the deep roads, only to lose her to the circle anyway WTH. Than the death of Hawk's mother with no option to save her?WTH. I came to the forums to see how I could fix this but from what I read, the game is just messed up (I used mess for trying not to use a bad word).

Next time, just bring Bethany into the Deep Roads with you. Make sure you bring Anders though

Her becomming a Warden isn't much better imo. Sure she will have more freedom, but the Wardens pay a heavy price. So I decided to let her go to the circle and at the end of game I get her back.

I completely agree with Alex475, MESSED UP. Every option available sucked. Now I commend BioWare for drawing me in like they did with the intense story options of saving family members. But when I arrived to try and save my mother, only to get a cut scene of me throwing a butter knife at one of his level 1 grunts is preposterous. Where the <mess up words> is me replicating the scene from Punisher when he kills the ****** that killed his father??????? Or the 300 scene when we see the father go blood drunk over his sons death?

Something?!?

One dagger through both his hands pinning them behind his back, then another up through his jaw into his skull. And then we go to town on him. Maybe even a fist punch to the next person to open their mouth, including party members trying to comfort you. Seriously devs, this was his MOTHER were talking about, violated in the most insane gruesome way.

Granted I wailed on his ass in under 4 seconds for game combat. But a nice recap in epic cut scene payback would of been gold. !!!***Especially***!!!, sence it is now confirmed there being no way to aviod it. My character would of 'lost it' at this point. Either completely going dark, or selecting the dialog option "I'm leaving Kirkwall" the first chance they got.

This. Absolutely.

I wanted a scene of Hawke going crazy on this guy. We can show people exploding but not this? Of all of the people in the game I wanted to freaking annihilate, all of the sadistic crazy bastards who needed to be killed, could we not have given this maniac, who kills your mother and stiches her together with corpses, a more gruesome death? COME ON!!

I literally had to pause and collect myself. That entrie scene is so intense. Like a punch in the gut. My thinking was, "Who cares about the damn Qunari...my mother was just mutilated by a psychopath."

Still, epic stuff.

I liked the bit where you saw Leandra in her Frankenbride look. It was kinda creepy. I just didn't like the forced conclusion this part of the story had. Much like any forced conclusion in DA2, it could only end badly. It was doubly annoying since I managed to get Bethany killed.

It did not once make me question siding with the mages. Everything else in the game lead me to see the mages as oppressed an by the end we were given pretty clear signals that Meredith was mad and extremely unpopular and siding with the Templers meant siding with her. It was only once I sided with the mages that I felt maybe I shouldn't have since they decided to kill themselves (on my blade mostly).

You want the Ultimate Templar Hawke? She loses her brother in Lothering by Ogres brought into the world originally by..... mages.

Her sister mage dies a cruel death in the Deep Roads.

Her mother is murdered by a Blood Mage.

Left all alone, seething in sadness and rage, how is a Hawke NOT supposed to side with the Templars?

Sorry to double-post, but someone made a great point about this scene changing the way they were roleplaying. That up until that point they were choosing sarcastic remarks and making a sarcastic Hawke, then she started using aggressive options after Leandra died.

DA 2's dominant personality system was a great step forward. The next step forward is for the game to recognize sudden personalities shifts. Like others should react to a personality change in Hawke, remark on it. Maybe the game could flag when the major shifts happen and the player can choose from them when it comes to explaining why the personality shift - or tell them to shove off. The next frontier....

Sorry. Totally off topic. Poor Mama Hawke, felt terrible, LI being involved was great, so sad for Hawke, etc. etc.

AS stated before the whole "blood magic is bad BAD' seems very one-sided. NO one who is a good guy(aside fro m Merril) uses it.
Blood magic was more gray in DAo but in here its clear that EVERYONE hates blood magic, espically contradicting Anders who is houses a spirit/demon in him.
The Leandra death seemed only to encourage your rage for blood magic.
While the whole game you saw mplars being complete dicks. SO everyone is jacked up but you cant be neutral or kill both sides.
THe game put alot of effort into making me not care for either side once the ending approached.
So how am I supposed to use my blood mage specialization with a sound mind since everyone hates it. Makes me feel like a uber douche just activating it.

I prefer darlspawn killing because they dont whine as much and they're upfront with you, "I want to kill you.. die!"

Can anyone say Oedipus complex? (I suspect he was muddling her up with Lilley, though).

It's funny, actually - I let Gascard live a few times after going to his mansion (felt sympathetic about the sister business, despite the blood magic) but always went to Lowtown via Gamlen to find Leandra.

Finally in my current game I realised that you could meet Gascard again in Darktown and find her that way, which later reveals Gascard's real intent. I feel a lot less sympathetic towards him now. It's amazing how much you miss when you take certain routes through the game.

The death of the mother is important for the personal story of Hawke like the leave of the surviving brother at the end of Act 1, so it cannot be avoided.

Very sad, but the whole quest is very strong and makes you feel intense emotions, so I appreciate they put it.

I know!! I too believed when he started talking about his sister. Gahh.... somtimes I'm so eaisly fooled. Well, I had Varric with me the time when I asked for Gascard to help me find mom so it sorted itself out pretty quick. I thought that it was a great questline, was crying floods first time around. Second Hawke I realised that this storyline was tied to Emmeric, I didn't do his q in the first Act on the first Hawke. Love seeing new things     :)

Yeah, I had Varric too. That was a...good scene. I might have moaned a bit about the game being samey (more so than Origins) no matter what you do, but I do keep finding new stuff. Apparently (if Varric isn't with you) then Gascard will turn up again in Darktown later for some interesting dialogue, so I may try that next time.

I felt so bad, kept rethinking what I should have done to prevent Leandra`s death. For some time I didn't see any reason why I would want to do any of the other quests, kept looking at the place in the house where Leandra should be and I felt so sad...

I have to congratulate Bioware on this one. It reminded me of the episode 'Marionette' from that Fringe series. Really sad.

Found a bug, though. After she was killed I went to the Gallows and talked to that templar who stood in Emeric's place after his death (I hadn't looked for her before rushing to find the mother). Hawke talked to her as if she was still looking for Leandra.

Do my companions react differently depending on their level of friendship/rivalry? Fenris came visit me (even though he had no ability to comfort anyone) because I was romancing him, Anders said his condolences, and there was Aveline's quest. But there was no reaction from Varric, Merril or Isabela.

All the the above happened to my!Hawke too. BUT, she was also deeply involved with Anders, both as a lover and as a closer thing to a Malcom Hawke subsitute then she'd ever comfortably admit. She'd seen magic hurt and help, her family and everyone else. When she wonders if "magic" is good or evil, she just sees the faces of all the mages she's ever known, the ones she's loved and the ones she's hated, and asks herself, if they didn't have magic, would they be the same people? And she can't see how they wouldn't be.

That was why she stood up for the mages in the end.

I've had Sebastian, Fenris, and Anders give condolences when I speak to them in party. Your LI will visit you at your home (except Sebastian). Aveline will show up if you're not romancing anyone.

I was upset about not being able to save Leandra (Hawke just can't catch a break), but I get why they did it, other than emotional impact. Can't have your character run off at the end of the game with Mommy still waiting for you at home apparently.

In this scene I made my signature move..."The Face Palm"
Then dealt with the frustration of not having Phoenix Downs to revive her was even worst...
