Evil Chris here. I am hijacking this thread to be more than just initial impressions.

We would like your DragonA ge II reviews here. The good and the bad. What you liked and what you disliked. We want to hear from you.

Please keep in mind that simply posting "BEST GAME EVAR!1!1" is not useful neitehr is "THIS GAME SUCKS!".

Also, please do not post spoilers here. There will be a thread in the Gameplay Discussion forum for detailed, "spoilerific" reviews

So please, post your SPOILER FREE reviews of Dragon Age II here.

Thanks :)

I havent got it yet, but I'm pretty sure its going to be epic.
I'm annoyed with all the potheads that keep saying DA:O is better.
Heres a fact;
DA:O Was made in 7 years
DA II was made in 2 years
Of course it would be more dumbed down but that doesnt mean you wont enjoy it!

Updated - 3/11 , ~7 hours played (will continue to update)

System: PC - Windows 7 64x

General Likes:
*Like the faster action/combat
*Love the graphics updates (this is certainly an opinion, I don't blame people who don't like it)
*Love that 2 handers do cone damage with auto attack
*Mages are insane!
*Like the updated dialog options, I always wanted a wiseass response in DA:O
*Love the import previous saved game option although it doesn't seem to play a large role (not like in mass effect)

General Dislikes:
*Was hoping for slightly more customizations as far as player looks, maybe different voice options since we can only make male/female humans(not a huge deal at all)
*Darkspawn skins are meh, I like the other stuff.
*Not a fan of the minimap, when I hover over points of interest I expected a box telling me what the point is. Like when you are in the full map view.
*The "hard" difficulty needs to be the normal difficulty. Normal is WAY too easy, I don't even think there is friendly fire on normal. On normal I didn't pause the game at all, I changed to hard and now need to use a bit more tactics.

Other Comments:

Overall I am enjoying the game.

Specifics:
Animations: Would like to see more dismembermant, less body explosions. Also need more final hit "finishing" moves.

Store System: One of my biggest grips is the way the stuff you buy is organized. When I click on the armor merchant, it should show everything he is selling in one window, or automatically switch to the armor tab. I won't lie the first 5 merchants I went to I thought they didn't sell anything because I wasn't on the right tab.

Its simplified to the level of dumbing down. There are no longer skills, crafting (you have to go to vendors to craft stuff). The combat is repetitive and needs no tactical thinking whatsoever. All you need to do is spam attacks/spells. There is a clear copy pasting of maps. For a game with this large a budget you should expect cleat detailed maps. But NO.

I am heavily disappointed. What is the use of wasting so much money into a rushed game? i hope other games from Bioware do better.

The character creation screen is extremely poorly designed. It's so dark I can barely see the cursors. I thought my copy of the game was bugged and stuck on the default Hawke.

In terms of combat I would recommend playing the game on nightmare. I won't say anything about the maps as I have yet to get the game and can thus offer no judgement in regards to my opinion on the matter.

Odd, does that happen with any other games you own? I didn't have any darkness issue. You know if you move the slider like...3 over in order to do customizations right? That was a little odd I thought.

Good point. Sorry for the confusion in changing, but lets try and keep this a spoiler free thread for the purpose above.

I have played the demo and so far I think it is awful. Why have they changed it so much from the original game engine. The attacks are hugely OTT - it seems the 'champion' can wipe out entire hordes of DS with one freaking move. What the hell is that about??? It looks cartoony, the animation is WORSE than the original. And what DO the darkspawn look like??? Don't look like the bad guys we faced off in the original. Not only do they look a lot different they also seem half as deadly. The upgrade / talent screen looks ridiculously dumbed down.
Why have Bioware changed a winning formula and given us this crap?

Have you even played it? Of course there are skills, unless we mean different things by that word. There is no crafting... but there is? Good point, well made. It's a matter of opinion, and not one that I really care about either way, but only being able to craft at merchants or pre-set places makes more sense. How is it that these people are making potions and traps with their bear hands, with no actual equipment? The combat is the same as DA:O - for the most part in that game, you just let your party auto-attack, maybe threw in the odd spell for good measure, and it was incredibly straight forward. There was a very obvious copy-pasting of areas in DA:O too; the back alleys in Denerim were all the same, the mages tower was used about 5 times for separate and significant areas.

Honestly, if the best criticisms are (a) things that don't make sense and (B) things that better apply to DA:O, I'd say Bioware are onto a winner here.

Been playing 18hrs now...
The good:
love the game.. graphics.. spell effects....story lines.. LIs.. TONS of quests.. no locks ups, crashes , etc... no issues with DLC... smooth sailing except for the below....

The bad:
Dx11 performance SUCKS.. even with the nvbeta drivers.. with my rig, the game is *unplayable* (I consider anything under 15fps unplayable) with all the DX11 options on. Either the game's DX11 engine needs work, the drivers need work, or both. I suspect both. I have to run in HIGH detail mode at 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 to get decent performance.. if I go to VERY HIGH (even with no boxes checked)... boom 15fps.. and even less in combat.

Import feature is BROKEN. I have tried several saved games.. and also checked the plot flags in Da2 and I can confirm it's either not importing anything... sometimes it imports some and not other... the feature is very very broken.

Equipment.. the equipment screens look VERY dated and you can't use armor on your party members (why was this done again? makes no sense to me).

The limited inventory is ANNOYING... im constantly having to find a vendor to sell to.

What do you mean by "can't use armor on your party members"? I know you're saying it's the same for DA:O, but I'm not sure what you mean either way. I won't disagree about limited inventories being annoying, but that's kind of the point of them, to make you choose - and it's typical in WRPGs, either through numerical limitation or weight. It annoyed me in DA:O too, but then as I said, it means you just have to only take back the stuff you know is going to sell for a lot rather than carrying around every last item you find, ever.

Edit
Oh, I think I've figured out what you mean. You just phrased it oddly. You mean you can't change the armour of your party members, and the time that they did this before is in ME2, right? Well this is another thing I don't mind about either way - in a sense. I actually prefer in JRPGs how characters have certain outfits that one associates with them - the same can even be said for films. Think of LotR and generally there are certain looks that the characters have at different parts of the film that are iconic and really sum up where they are in their character arc (ranger Aragorn vs king Aragorn, for example).

It would still be nice if, like in a JRPG, you could at least equip them how you see fit with their appearance just being fixed, I'm not sure why they've taken away that option but I bet there are ways to upgrade this through the plot, as someone has already said.

I just uncrypted my full version of it and I have to say I am no impressed this is a true sequel. The graphics are no impressive from what I am seeing. Don't get me wrong, it is an improvement, but not a vast improvement I was expecting. The reason I give this half happy answer is because some of the structures of the face are pulled over and even when I had my graphics on high or very high I still saw rocks that were blocky and looked something from the PS2.

Over the graphics I actually checked other versions of the game and the quality and found that my comp was up to the standards to what the game was giving me. Comparing it to Dragon Age Origins, I actually am daring to say the first one had a better visual then the second.

Game play is an improvement, period. The battles are faster and I had to blink a few times because I did not see if I landed a hit or if I was lagging. Turns out the animations are just blazing fast now. Killing darkspawns is kind of fun and you are now cutting them down in no time. The only complaint I can say is that from what I have played it is not as tactical as it's predecessor.

Design: I don't know who in Bioware was smoking in remaking darkspawn, but I honestly am not... afraid now. The new designs for the some of the dark spawns reminds me of the putty patrol from the orginal power rangers. They have lost that dark and evil look that made me fear and love them in the orginal game. Art wise I find the first few mobs to be a downgrade no an up.

Lastly I find that only having one race compared to the three and the several background stories did not bode well for me. While the trade for this is my toon having a voice and customizing. It's not anything new. A side not on customizing is that I felt it was lacking many options. I felt that only a dozen or so hair styles and, and half of those were seen in the original game, seems half ass in my opinion.

I am still going to play the game right now but from the first few looks I feel I will get a different experience compared to the first one. Whether that is a good or bad thing I do not know as of now.

It nothing like the Dragon Age Origins. I think they created trash from the original. Why change everything when you had a winning game that made us all fans to make a look like Harry Potter child game.

Under each companion's armor slot, there are 4 little boxes. Maybe you can unlock 4 different outfits? That would be pretty cool. So far the game is fun. Had to go down to Hard, Nightmare is kicking my ass.

Biggest complaint, no tac camera view. I mean, I knew they got rid of it but I keep finding myself trying to mouse wheel zoom out just like in Dragon Age Origins to get a better view and position my crew proper. SUCKS :(
