One thing to the simplified combat: (I think this shows how good the new "dynamic" combat is)

I was fighting 4-5 darkspawns and 1 ogre. (as mage). Because I was watching tv , all my partymembers went to the dust. 1 lvl 3 Mage vs 5 Darkspawns and 1 ogre. Because of the super new dynamic combat system, with its rediciulous short casttimes , i was able to run circles around them ( they just followed me like sheeps, unable to EVER reach me because you can run faster then them) and sling fireball after fireball on them.
A level 3 Mage killed 5 Darkspawns and 1 ogre without even being hit 1 time.
(on hardmode)

sorry, but what is this sh*t? how the hell can someone say there is "tactical combat" in DA2?
The whole "tactic" thing was cancelled by shorten all attack/cast times to 0.001 ms compared to DA:O

You just described a kite tactic you used to get yourself out of a jam. That is tactical.

Yeah kiting is a tactic. Very annoying in MMOs when bastard Archers and Mages have a bazzilion Slows...

exactly , kiting is a tactic. but  in most games kiting requires slowdown/rootspells, which makes it ( still a pretty poor, but nevertheless) a tactic. in DA2 you can just kite without even using 1 slow or root , because you can run faster than your enemies an pretty much cast while running.
imo this is rediciulous

i dont understand people said graphics awesome did you look at npc's ears oh god i cant look at it.its like some sort of genetical fail.

and textures ,oww, so bad. when i was at kirkwal* slums just 1 texture to cover all damn place. ok i get it place is dump but 1 texture come on! even stairs made of it.you know its like somecrapy wood texture with horizantal lines.

and inventory hmm all items looks same i just had a big confusion there.all items icons looks same i cant figure which one is cloth or plate or whatever its.just remember baldurs gate 2 i can still tell you the name of item by looking it in the inventory screen since i had played it so long time ago.

combat is soo fast and thats annoying and its a mess. da:o was better when in terms of tactic.By the way where is tactical isometric camera? it was a win  for DA:O. sad to see its gone.

friendly fire must be an prefered option for player to choose.i know at nightmare there is friendly fire but all other difficulty levels need it to.

npc's in city is a disaster their head look like faces drawn to a balloon.they are cheap work.
i have soo much to complain but its enough for now.maybe after i finish the game

So far to me the game feels very simplified and dumbed down a bit.  Even the storyline feels very linear.  I am early in the game so I'm hoping this will change.

Disappointed.

I feel like I'm playing Mass Effect in the Dragon Age Setting. That's not a good thing.

The character customization screen as others stated is awful. It's too dark to see certain aspect of your character (for instance black hair completely fades into the background so you can barely see the style). I'm not sure it but it seems like the sliders have less options than Dragon age Origins. Or maybe it's just harder to make a character that doesn't look like his/her head was smashed in with a shovel. Just like ME, it feels like it's either the default Shep, or Hawke in this case, or you have a character that looks like they have down syndrome. After about an hour screwing around with that I made a character that I could..stand to look at through the game, only to be further disappointed because the voice doesn't fit the face in the slightest. I like having voice overs, but I also like choice. DA2 robbed the players of creating their own protagonist. I'd prefer a silent main character over being stuck with the one voice option we were left with.

The 'social wheel' dialogue interface that was ripped out of ME and implanted into this game is another disappointment. I like being able to know what my character is going to say, instead it feels again like you're stuck with someone else's character that you have to play with and you just get to decide if he's a good guy or an <insert your preferred expletive here> to everyone he meets.

As far as positives... combat is definitely more exciting now. It's fast paced and doesn't have a dull moment. That, unfortunately, is about all that I've come across that has improved. It's also about the only thing that keeps me going through the game. The combat is exciting enough to keep me engaged, but the before-mentioned drawbacks have made this a game I actually have to convince myself to play, whereas dragon age origins I had to pry myself away from. ***edit 03/10/11*** - - I think I have to retract that positive. The combat was pretty with the new animations, but after that impression wore off I realized there's little to no tactical involvement in the battles anymore. The story isn't at all engaging to me even this far intot he game. Currently uninstalling and going back to play DA:O another time through with a different origin. ***

Mass Effect may have been a great selling franchise, but not everyone wants to play its clone.

I'm ... indifferent. The storyline is well done, but I feel very little connection to any of the characters so far. Im a few hours in, guess that may change. These are my opinions, so please do not attack me for them.

Things I like :
Lovely game. Hi res is gorgeous, if occassionally laggy on my high-end machine.
Decent voices so far (EXCEPT that the Dalish all seem Irish and look like N'avi?)
Nice areas to explore.
Good build up (no sudden wtf why am I here moments. Yet)

Things I dislike :
Very linear so far.
The dialog system. I hate not knowing exactly what Im saying.
Voiced main character. While I like femhawke's voice...I would like it more if it were my own voice.

Overall : I feel less like *I'm* playing...and more like a pre-created character is being directed by me. In DAO Origins, I felt more in role. Here...not so much. Sadly, I'd rather be the hero, instead of directing one.

I completely agree.

Gonna add a bit of my own opinion here, I don't think it's the voice acting that makes it feel less like you're playing this character, I think it's the fact a god damn Dwarf is telling the story... another thing I dislike about this... I want to be playing my character how he is now... not how he's being told in a story regardless of whether this story is wrong or right.

Very early in the game, prelim thoughts.

- Like the characters I've met so far, yeah even Carver.
- Quests nothing earth shattering interest wise yet.
- A bit of merchant overload, too many merchants all selling different stuff.
- I'm going to have to increase to Hard game play wise I think as combat has been a breeze so far.
- Combat not great for one reason, things happen too fast. I know that was an objective, for combat to be more responsive but it's tough to be appreciative of combat moves when things happen so quick you can't see what's going on.
- I'm playing as a mage on the x box. The A button issue is not as bad as of yet as I thought it would be.

Edit:  Oh and I dislike the new elves.  Merril is cute as a button but the others and their hang dog ears look goofy and seem to be a reproduction of the creatures in 'avatar' for some reason.

I'm loving this game so much. Honestly, the only complaint that I can think of his how hard it is to read the text on my cruddy TV. Other than that, I am just brimming with anticipation for my classes to be over so that I can keep playing. I've finally got all my companions, and I'm nearly done with all of the sidequests before the end of the first act.

Now, first impression that I need to preface the rest of my thoughts is, this game isn't Dragon Age Origins. But when I think about it, I don't want Dragon Age Origins, I have that game, I've played that game, and while I love it why would I want to play another carbon copy of it? There are things here that are different, but I don't dislike the game at all for those changes. It's like having two kids, even if they're different, you're still allowed to love both of them.
First bit, combat. Love love love it. I was a little frustrated playing the mage early on, but the farther you get in the game, the more rewarding it is to be slinging spells left and right. Combat is fast, tight, and I'm really excited to play through it again on Hard (I always play for the story first, then combat later, Normal suits me just fine for a first playthrough).

Second, characters. I am just blown away, I looooove these characters. I went into the game expecting to feel 'meh' about quite a few people. I wasn't excited by Fenris' voice, Anders seemed to have lost his charm, Carver seemed plain, and Varic was just 'the funny guy'. But man, was I wrong. I've only seen these guys through one act, and I'm already in love with every single on of my party members. I love their interactions with my Lady Hawke, and I love their interactions with each other. Two of them have a simmering rivalry, other two seem to have struck and unexpected friendship... I can't wait to see how they'll develop together, and through the acts.

I also love Kirkwall, but I was also one of those people who was always behind the idea of growing up in a single city. I've spent ten hours wandering around it, and now I feel like I really have lived there for a year. The entire place feels so alive from the bugs buzzing in Lowtown, to the beautiful gardens of the Upper Estates. While I see what people are saying about copy pasted dungeons (I went to the exact same cave in two different locations) I balance it out by doing a bit in the city, then taking outside quests.

Finally, I just have to say that I love my Hawke! She's adorable, and I feel like I really do shape her. Yes there are tone icons, but once you actually get into the deep decisions, they strip it away and all you see are the arrow icons for choice. I also just love how she turned out looking really pretty, and little things like the way her hair will sway in certain animations. Her voice fits her perfectly, and I just could not be happier. Since it's my first time through I really am playing a self-insert of myself, and I'm loving it.

aslkgasd I'll try to stop gushing now... but can you tell that I love this game?

I'm pretty underwhelmed so far. Playing a girl rogue. I like the brighter graphic style, but I'm pissed that I am forced to go either two daggers or bow. Sword and axe? Two axes? Sword and board? Why not?

I played for about five hours, running around Kirkwall now. So far there isn't much story. I don't give a **** about my character or any of the NPCs. DA:O was nice because going from origin story to Grey Warden made you feel important. Unfortunately, when the story in this is about your rise from nobody to champion, you have to play a nobody for a while.

Also, not being able to change armor on NPCs sucks. Especially because I have blood dragon armor and can't use it.

Well, I'm about 9 hours in, so let me describe my first impressions:

Combat: I play on casual, since I'm much more interested in the story, so all I can say there that's it's fun and dynamic. Combat animations look really good as well.

World and map layout: So far, the world feels a bit closed in and narrow. I understand why we spend most of our time in Kirkwall, but it would be nice to be able to explore the areas outside of it a bit more.

Storyline: Very fun, very engaging and very hard! No matter what you do, someone is displeased. The choices are rather difficult and make you think ahead. Something that might seem like a nice gesture now, might turn up to be a very bad choice later on. My Hawke just wants to be friends with everyone and make everyone live happily-ever-after and so far it seems impossible, which in my opinion makes the dialogues and conversation system much more evolved and improved. (guess you can't just bribe everyone into liking you this time around :innocent: )

Overall: I'm thoroughly enjoying the game so far and can't wait to see where the story goes.

Does it look moddable like DA:O, or did they kill that too, moddings this games last saving point.. although even that'll only get it so far. Can't believe I defended this after the demo. So tempted to go in tomorrow and just cancel my Pre-order(Which I orded at teh stat of January). I don't like paying for crap. I was a huge fan of Infinity Ward and didn't get MW2 which turned out to be a good idea, may be smart to do the same with this.

Overall, I like the game. some things work, some dont. The one drawback for me is how it feels like im playing a damned console game on my PC. It is epically disappointing that all these new games in recent years are just ports. i feel claustrophobic in the level design because it has to work on these inferior console platforms. i tried to imagine what this game would've been if it wasn't console-handicapped and i died a little inside.

Joe Juba at Game Informer summarizes
exactly my impressions of DA2:

On all platforms, Dragon
Age II caters to an audience that didn’t connect with Origins, while alienating those who did. This may result in a better console experience, but considering that Dragon Age: Origins was a love letter to old-school PC RPGs, Bioware’s neglect of the sequel’s PC release is tragic. I appreciate the technical refinements, but improving the polish doesn’t do much good when the basics still need work.

I know that EA prefers console titles to that of PC titles and that's why it feels and plays like a button
masher. Don't get me wrong. DA2 is a great game and I'm enjoying it, but I don't think should have been called a sequel to DA:O. Rather "The Adventures of Hawke: The Dumbing Down of DA:O"

PROS:
The combat is fantastic although not tactical at all.
Conversation wheel ala ME
Companions seem deeper. Or maybe I just like them better.

CONS:
Pause & play is there but who cares? No need for it, just button mash and you're good to go.
I for one loved customizing my companions armor... REALLY miss that
The same locations over and over again.
The tactical view is gone.
No real plot from the beginning. No evil doer that I know is my enemy. (Keep in mind I haven't finished the game, so this may be a little further into the game.)
The whole game feels like it's built for a console with no game pad support built in.

Bioware is probably my favorite developer. They've done a great job building this game but I do feel put out so EA can cater to the consoles.

Thanks for your hard work
Bioware.

Played my friends game as i couldnt resist.
I liked the combat, the graphics and the characters.
The recycled caves did annoy me a tad.
Enjoying story so far. Lots of twists and turns, engaging and fun!.
Would like more companion/character talks/interactions. especially flirts. Why can't we cuddle up with our LI? and have intimacy when we please like origins.Other interactions like kissing LI in public would have been funny, and having other characters comment on it.
- does drinking do anything? i would like to get drunk...(drunken kiss?ahh the possiblilities) Card games interaction as they have banter about it, or even just walking in them in the middle of a game. helping another character to cheat, or cheating yourself.gain rivalry/friendship points :D.
Maybe DLC? ^
There is plenty of potential for extra stuff within the three year gaps. I havent got dog so wouldnt know if he reacts to party members like in origins. Can just imagine the banter/cutscenes.

I'm not terribly hard to please (I liked FFXIII overall and King Bounty: Armored Princess/Crossroad is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion), but... I've definitively enjoyed the 4 hours I played so far.

There's one thing that massively annoys me: Constant enemy reinforcements from all sides. I don't think I've seen a single battle so far that didn't have a swarm of enemies spawning all around you beside the very first non-exagerated battle. I feel that encounters like that should be the exception, not the norm. I'd rather have a larger amount of enemies to deal with in the first place instead, or at least generally have the reinforcements come from the front/logical direction rather than from everywhere all the time.

Beside that, I'm having fun, I prefer the new skill trees to the old ones and I love the characters so far. I just hope that there's a decent amount of dialogs with party members: Those were the highlight of Dragon Age Origin for me.

Anders massively irked me: I've been very nice, helpful and supportive of him (I appreciate his healing of sick people), but when I told him I was not interested in flirting/having a romance with him, he starts into an emo-rant, and gets a huge pile of Rivalry points, even though I've been as awesome a friend I could be, beside wanting to romance him. I liked him before that, but if it's a rivalry he wants, it's a rivalry he gets! *grumble* I suppose that managing to make a character irk the player is sign of good writing :)

Did Aveline model change since older builds? I always found her pretty meh in screenshots or even in the demo, but... I find her looking really beautiful in all those dialogs scenes with her for some reason.

I did die on the inside, I have been looking forward to this for so long, was prepared to overlook quite a lot of things as there were a lot of good things, but then the bad just kept piling on, then I find out you can't customize companion's armour in a game where it would be natural for characters to constantly change to new armour/clothes, it adds style to it.
I don't want to see the same stuff over and over, I hate Isabella's clothes for a start... ahhh sighhhh... I've been ranting about this one thing for sooo long. Sick of console ports... not that I'm saying console gamers are happy with this either, but it still is a console port :/

My impressions:

When DA2 was two weeks from release, I decided to go finish DA:O. I was about 47 hours in DA:O, so I had to finish the mage tower, do Orzammar, then some few more side quests and then I ended the game.

Right after ending, I played DA2 demo... UGH and OMG was my first reaction. Animation were too fast, too "consoley", if I may say that. I was sad to see DA2 take the direction of the Consolification of games.

Fast forward... and I picked up DA2 release day, and I'm loving it!

Inventory simplifications: love the junk category! not sure I love the idea of not managing my companions' inventory though... but I think I can manage. I'll miss comparing stats like crazy that's all :) I can see how that makes it easier for consoles that have no mouse to quickly navigate complex uis.

combat: the speed... I'm getting used to it, I could use it slowed down a tiny bit, but I'm over the OMG reaction from the first time. I'm a rogue, and I pause the game a lot anyways.

I bumped the difficulty to hard -- I wonder why I had to do that... DA:O felt more challenging and I was playing in easy! Anyways, not a big deal but I urge anyone feeling that the game is too easy (hint: you never care to drink potions!) to bump up the challenge.

Love the better graphics! And I'm not directx 11 :-(

That's all for now -- I hope DA2 gives me HOURS of entertainment! I heard it's shorter than DA:O, that might make me sad so I hope for lots of LONG DLC!

I like the combat more than I thought I would, but the lack of a detachable camera on nightmare where friendly fire is a concern is very annoying.  Also, the hold position function doesn't work perfectly- I switch it on and carver will still scythe through my mage after a 5 second delay or so.  Mostly nightmare concerns, shouldn't really trouble anyone playing without friendly fire.

My wife and I had canceled our preorder after playing the demo. Even then, we decided to set the day aside yesterday and visit a friend who didn't cancel his preorder. We were all ready to nip to the game store on the way home if it turned out our impressions based on the demo were wrong. We went to a restaurant for dinner instead.

I felt as though we were playing an MMORPG without the other players. The quests were almost all of the sort one would expect to find in World of Warcraft and the enemies were just countless copies of the same spammed about all over the place. At no point did I feel even remotely invested in my character. As an RPG this game fails in every way I can think of. Poor plot? What plot is more like it. Just when it felt like a plot was begining to evolve it cut to the the dwarf and the "seeker" and jumped 3 years into the future. What the hell is that? The most basic of storytelling tools seem to have been put asside for this game. I at no point felt any form of satisfaction after completing a tougher quest. The armors are almost all just the same model with different stats, not even recolored. I could go on all day about everything that is wrong with this game.

If this was DA:O and DA:O was DA2 and there was a 5 year gap between the 2 then it might make some sense. Lets face it, Oblivion is a better RPG than this and it's almost 5 years old. To some up, DA2 is terrible as a sequal and as a stand alone game, say if it were called Kirkwall: Rise of the Champion, it would still be a terrible RPG. Take off the RPG title and call it an "Action, Adventure" title and it will sell to console junkies looking for some fun with friends. As a PC experience, well, I am glad I spent the money I would have on this taking my wife out for a nice meal.

Im about 8 hours into it and some of the things i dont like are the enemy respawn thing. not being ablle to use armor on companions. the new skill system is ok, but so was the one from dao. I wish their was a zoom like dao so i can at least see the whole battlefield. I dont mind the more action based combat but the missions are very repetitve. But i guess it was still fun and worth my money but its a bit underpar for a Bioware game.

It breaks my heart, but I'm impressed with Dragon Age 2. And It has nothing to do with streamlined interface or change in graphic direction (even if if find it tacky and ill suited to DA setting).

But this game is just lacks meat to it. Big locations with no interesting NPCs to talk. Combat that feels extremely repetitive and completely unrelated to reality in which it takes place. Lack of peaceful options to resolve quests... the list goes on.

And its not enough to give your character a voice actor, you also need to give him something interesting to say. It's sometimes impressive how fully voiced and outspoken character can be so bland and so alienating at the same time. I do not feel like I'm Hawk. Hell I don't even like this guy.
