Very nice first post! I like how your review is structured. It is very informative and professional! May I ask what do you do for a living? With writing skills like this, I think you will do well in certain company's marketing department. Probably a company that starts with a "B"? How long did it take you to write that review? More than an hour or two?

PR damage control amidst a **** storm of user complaints. :wizard:

*g* Thanks!  I am a computer science PhD student (and actually, should be writing research proposals at this exact moment... hm).  While I've never really fancied going into marketing, at the San Diego Comic Con DA2 preview I did say I'd quit grad school to work as a programmer at Bioware, but I was basically told to apply on the website like everyone else. <_<

Anyway as for how long it took me to write, my memory is god awful, but I think I slapped the review together in about an hour or so.

Anyway, thanks again, I really appreciate the compliments :)

This thread was started so people could state their opinions on the game. There is no reason to throw insults or start a fight (over the internet sadly enough) just because you don't like another persons opinion. Either you liked the game or you didn't, simple enough.

I was very skeptical at first, and even totally underwhelmed by the first hour and a half of gameplay. Now a few hours in, it is growing on me.

First surprise is that I actually really appreciate the improvement in the graphics so far. The combat tends to get into button-mashing territory, that's true, no matter what the devs say... but I also manage to play more tactically. You just have to get used to the speed and not be afraid to pause... a lot.

The voices are alright, nothing outstanding, and certainly inferior to DAO or ME. I do dislike the dialogue wheel system. If you want your Hawke to sound coherent and not look like a he has split personality disorder, you are just forced to keep selecting the same path of answers (similar tones). It really breaks the role playing element, realism of the conversation and greatly impacts the immersion.

The characters and story is also a letdown. Again, not bad, but very much inferior and less exciting, involving that the epicness of DAO and ME.

As of now, I give it a 7/10. It's a good game, not great. And that's the problem... from Bioware I expect nothing but greatness. And they failed in this matter. Sorry Bioware, you let us down.

So... when is The Witcher 2 coming out again?

Played for about +- 3 hours now. I think this is what happened:

Ok well I tried to come up with something funny, but just like the game, it's not worth alot of my time.

A quick summary of what I feel in this game: -craftmanship, +money output. It's a rushed, empty feeling game. It's enjoyable because I played Dragon Age: Origins, but damn, I am seriously dissapointed.

Thank you EA for slowly r*ping BioWare, and thank you BioWare for letting yourself get r*ped.

I'm about 7 hours into it.... so far I'm LOVING everything I see.... no complaints... except that on my machine, I don't think the mouse is working properly, but that's nothing to do with the game..... The game itself I think is AMAZING!

I like the game, but honestly I find it VERY underwhelming and disappointing.  It just doesn't at all seem to hold a candle to DAO.

The characters and story don't seem as interesting (personal preference, I know) but it's clear from all the recycled dungeons that the locations aren't nearly as varied.  The character interaction also doesn't seem anywhere near as deep.

The art style is also hit or miss.  Some things look pretty good, some absurd.  Most elves look stupidly anorexic.  These qunari has crazy big horns now.  Some of the darkspawn (especially in the beginning) look like some kind of weird pale stupid human from a cheezy 80's metal video.

I HATE that they decided to dumb down the game so much.

1.  You can't equip your teammates with armor.  I know you guys are probably doing this so you can have better character models (since they won't change their outfits) but this is just annoying.  If I find any piece of awesome armor outside of my class it turns into vendor trash instead of being able to upgrade your entire party across the board.

2. You removed a ton of specializations and skills and a LOT of the ones that are present in game seem very weak or lik they're trash filler.  This bugs me the most, I think.  Granted the skill trees weren't always the best in DAO, bu you could put together pretty powerful combinations if you weren't a total idiot.  Now it feels more like "put points into this useless skill so I can marginally increase this other skill so that it won't be quite as sucky."

That being said, I think I like the combat.  Not necessarly better, but I'm ok with it despite having to spam "A" while waiting for long cooldowns.

Is the game terrible?  No.  But it surely isn't anywhere near as good as I was hoping for (or that it should of been).  I seriously hope you guys take a long look at things and consider moving things back in the DAO direction for DA3.  :(

I'm personally not a fan.

I love the first one. I've generally played almost all of BioWare's games throughout the years, from Baldur's Gate to the newest Mass Effect. Jade Empire and KotOR. I intend to play them well into the future as well.

But there are some glaring problems that I personally have with the game. Especially being that I am primarily a PC gamer.

First off is the perspective. The inability of being able to mouse out and take a more tactical approach bothers me more than anything if I'm being totally honest here. As something that was hailed as "The spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" to remove something that goes back to the Baldur's Gate roots bothers me. It hurts the gameplay on the PC. And even IF it wasn't the perfect system in Origins the option to be able to do it was always nice.

Second is the combat. Before you could select the opponent you want to attack and it would basically auto-battle that opponent. Now I find myself clicking constantly. It doesn't hurt me, but it is a gripe that I have.

Thirdly is the completely unoptimized *in my opinion* High Resolution Texture pack that was released. I have the hardware to play Crysis, Crysis 2, Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 2 on absolute max settings with no problem. But this pack literally cuts my framerate by 60-70% at times. Not to mention that the highest settings had to be added as a download when it should have been on the disc to begin with. Now I don't know if this was the plan from the start, or if you guys faced backlash from the PC community during the demo, but it is a terribly poor design choice.

Fourthly is the story and dialogue. The story at times feels contrived. The lines in the script feel forced. And the characters on screen have the same old dead stare when they talk to you type of feel. It's 2011. I was hoping that you guys could advance beyond that and have interaction. Have dynamicness. But apparently not.

It's not a terrible game, but it does not hold up to the standards set by this company over the years. At all. The first one was the return from Revelations to Genesis so to speak, this one feels more like it needs to have an Exodus. I honestly feel like it's a 7/10 product, much like the DLC for Origins was.

It's obvious that this game, and dare I say BioWare in general, is catering to a console audience. I can understand that. It means more money at the end of the day. But all I ask is that when making something for the PC, or any system, optimize it first. It's 2011, as I said before. We should be past this. The technology is there. The games are built on PC's. There is ZERO reason to drop the ball like this. It is flat out unacceptable now. I have consoles, I have PC's. And when I play a game on ANY platform I expect, nay demand, a proper product. This whole mentality of "Do it for this one since it can make us more money" or "Release first, patch later" is killing gaming. I used to think it was DLC, but it's really this. If this was done in the cartridge and cassette days developers would have been hung and burned at the stake.

End of story.

Picked up my PC Signature Edition, read all the negative comments, rented the 360 version, returned both to the stores i got them from.

It was honestly the first Bioware game that i did not want to continue playing, and that is no small feat.

I can forgive most of what was removed from Origins, but the reasons i got my money back are unforgivable.

-First the companions that just walk up to you and say hello, i'm coming with you. What thet hell is that? And after they have invited themselves to the party, they refuse to even talk to you outside of certain areas. If i wanted to travel with strangers i would hire mercs.

Origins standout feature was the deep relationships between characters, and in this game i felt no connection to any of them at all. None of them spoke with any kind of emotion or left any kind of lasting impression on me.

And rogues that look at a trap or a locked door and say i can't help you? I don't want to hear that.

-Second, I am broke and i need money is not a proper storyline that will drive me anywhere. I live that one every day. I play games to save the day, be the hero,or the villian, explore the world.  Not to play errand boy.

-And last, i want to control every aspect on the battlefield, and i want to feel like i can control my troops and the enemy. Random enemies that spawn from thin air, and not having the simple ability to outfit my own companions is laughable at best.

Combat here just boils down to pick a guy and hit him with something.

Say what you like, flame me how you like, but i lost a ton of respect for Bioware today. Before now i could buy anything you guys made with no fear of being let down.  After today your future games will give me pause, which saddens me.

My only wish is a Dragon Age 3 that returns to the roots that i loved so much.

I agree about Isabella, but I digress. DA2 is awesome so far (about 20 hrs. in). I give it a 9/10. The story so far is really interesting, as are the companions. I do find myself longing for Shale (my favorite Origins teammate) and I am regretting being a rouge at times because I don't morally agree w/ the 2 warriors, but I am trying to avoid rivalries in my first playthrough. The combat is easily the best improvement over Origins, although I do wish I could dual-wield swords. It keeps me more interested in the fighting than Origins ever did. I can understand the people who miss the more tactical combat, but even in Origins I rarely used my companions in combat unless it was a boss fight. I prefered tactics slots, which are still present. My only real gripe is that I have yet to find any aesteticly appealing armor yet and I'm almost 2/3 of the way through the game. I guess if you are coming to this thread to find a review to help you decide whether or not to buy this game, my advice would be to just rent it first. I love this game, but I do think Origins was just a little better based on the epic story and the aforementioned Shale.

My first impressions -

I've had no technical issues on my ancient (4-year-old) desktop. No crashes to desktop, no freezes, no video lag. Hurrah!

Graphics - I'm stuck back at DX9, so I can't say much - looks OK overall. Facial animations - especially eyebrow movements seem really overdone and unrealistic. (Yes, that's a minor quibble.)
Love the detail that went into the design of Kirkwall. Other maps do seem to be recycled a lot - it's very noticeable. Still, not a big deal.

Characters - I'm really starting to like Hawke, but none of the companions have grown on me yet. I do like the special skills trees for companions, but don't really like that they have set outfits - I like dressing up my companions. :) Favorite companions from DAO: Morrigan and Leliana. After a while, it was pretty much impossible for my Warden to go anywhere without them. And for party banter, Morrigan + anyone is pure gold. So far, I find the party banter in DA2 pretty flat.

Combat - fast and fun. Does seem easier than DAO, which is good for someone like me, who initially had a hard time even on the "Easy" setting in DAO. Plus, Hawke feels like a bad@ss, which is fun.

Story - So far, so good. Can't wait to see what's next.

The Good:
Faster Combat: Enjoying this much more than Origins.

Graphics: On my 360 they are some of the best I have seen

Alot of Side quests: Love the abundance of side quests. More opinion on this below.

Companion Character Models: I really like that everyone has their own build. It makes it feel much more like a world. Also got to say I support characters having their own suits, but you could have let us have a couple skin options without probably selling us DLC (which I hate to say it will probably buy). However see companion armor issues lower in the list.

Conversation Wheel: I really like knowing the manner in which my character will speak than what she actually will say. It adds an element of surprise and if you are playing sarcastic humor.

Combo Dialogue: Also enjoy my Hawke taking on a personality.

Companion Dialogue and interaction: Conversations with my companions is one of the most enjoyable elements of the game, for future reference the more the better. Also I like the companions get into the conversations sometimes, I kept laughing when Isabella kept making lude comments during another companions quest, want to see more of this.

Item Stars: makes it real easy to see what I can sell.

Companions: So far on my first play I am really enjoying Aveline, Varric, and most of all Isabel. These character are very fleshed out and make the game for me.

The Bad:

Companion Armor: Like that they have their own build and custom suits but I felt as they got suit enhancements their outfits should modify also. Of course I say this when I really don't want Bela's suit to change at all.

Some Side Quests: A few of the side quests I completed without knowing what it was about. hese usually incorporate finding an item and giving to the person who lost it. It is okay I guess but I like my side quests with stories and. cutscenes.

The Ability Menu: This is minor but I liked the layout better in the demo. This is just a style preference.

The Ugly:

Map Recycling: This is a double edged sword. I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say this allowed you to make the overall game more polished. That being said it would be nice to see more variety.

The Darkspawn: I am sorry they just don't look as menacing as in origins. They look too much like zombies.

One Certain change in one of the character models: Varric's first telling of the origin story had some embellished details for one of the characters, kind of wished those details stayed put. Again minor and a preference.

This is my review half way through my first play through and will post an updated verson after I am done. Also just want to say if you at some point decide to turn this into an mmorpg I will forever give up any game made by you, I am still upset  by the abandonment of KOTOR. Just want to throw this out there because I saw someone make the suggestion.

Update to my first impression:

- after installing the 1gig high resolution textures, I have to say the details are amazing. Facial expressions, environment, sky, etc. For PC with DX11 cards it a must to install the hires textures.

Any comments on the upgrading system or Armor?

Armor - no like.  Want to outfit my companions again....epic fail.  Did like the stars -- for those in a hurry, who don't want to think. And since I could basically only dress myself....I didn't want to think.

Upgrading system - pretty but not functional.  All that back and forth, back and forth to look at the spells.  Too time consuming.

Personally, it feels like PC gamers were just left out in the cold. The Graphics, interface and upgrade options are sub par. Not to mention the loss of tactical combat, I personally think it was Bioware's way of trying to apologize to console users because DA:O was so difficult on consoles. It just feels like the whole hollow experience of DA2 is just a dummed down game so console users can enjoy it. Not for the Hardcore PC RPG enthusiest. First time I have ever been let down by Bioware. Feels like Bioware is selling out to console. Oh well, atleast only PC's will get TOR.

I am playing DA2 on the PS3 and will review it as such.

PROS:
The graphics seem better overall when compared to DA:O
The game is generally fun and I have yet to run into a portion that really bores me.

CONS:
I wish I could completely control the inventory and look of my companions
Dialog options are too few and at times they don't result in what you would think they would.
No relationship with Hawke and companions is really made, they are just there.
Baddies appear out of no where. jump off of roofs you say? Bulldung they magically appear.

Overall it is an okay game and I am enjoying it so far. I am a little disappointed in the fact that the game feels very unfinished, the missing item descriptions and generic names, the inability to equip companions as you could in DA:O. The side quests are all pretty random and are just one step up from randomly appearing you your journal, you need to talk to someone to get them, most of the time, but there really isn't a sense of importance placed on the tasks. For consoles the combat seems to be fine, I can understand where PC users would find it less than adequate, but for me it seems okay, though during cool downs it is more of a button masher. The repetitive use of the same or very similar maps adds to the feeling of the game being unfinished.

Some changes I would like to see are,

I would like to be able to completely customize my companions, I think I've beat that one enough so I wont elaborate. I would like to be able to pool skill points and save them for later levels, I hate being forced to pick a feat or spell that I don't want. I also wished there was more you had to do to get companions, entice them or persuade them to join your party, I liked that in DA:O your companions were compelled to join you for a reason other than you had said hi to them.

Like I said I am generally having a good time playing the game but I had hoped for so much more. I really loved DA:O and DA:A and I guess I got too high of expectations for this game. I give the game a 7/10, hopefully DA3 will nail it. Also if BW releases a DLC that doubles the play time of this game I will be very upset and feel cheated, unless it is FREE.

One quick add, why on the PS3 are the functions of the start and select buttons changed from DA:O to DA:2, I keep hitting select to get to my inventory.

When reading that DA:2 would not have that and would instead be more like Awakening I was initially upset.  Then I did a couple of playthroughs of DA:O in preperation for the release and damint if Liliana didn't regularly get in the way of a door or a corpse I was trying to loot.  After that I was glad that adventuring can't get interrupted with discussion.  Though at times I still miss it at times.

We should've been able to see more variety in a full game, and leave the recycling for DLCs. Reusing the same sets over and over again makes for a really boring experience. This is becoming a major gripe for me, as I continue to advance in the game. :/

I have returned my pre-order in bitter dissapointment. I love decking out my party members in all the amazing armor I find and now that just like in mass effect has been taken away. This is a game with swords, armor and dragons how can you take such a integral part away from us and leave us with simple insulting upgrade options.

Mass Effect 2 was dumbed down and I hated that part of it and I refuse to support the games I love being stripped down to cater to Joe Public. I will not be purchasing this game!

I won't get into a full review here because we're supposed to be discussing first impressions, so I'll stick to that only.

The game has surpassed my expectations based on what I had learned with regards to changes we would see from DA:O to DA:2. I was very concerned that it may fail to deliver the thrill ride, the excitement and the overall sense of being thrust into an action epic like the first, but it certainly does.

Likes:

1. Enjoy pace of the game & combat
2. Player housing & banter improvements
3. Potion management system
4. Item rating system (stars)
5. Storage Chest

Dislikes:

1. Limited Maps/Exploration
2. Limited character item customization for party members - (Would prefer more options when selecting appearence/armors/etc.; for party members)
3. Limited dialog options when in party mode (i.e. not being able to engage party members for interactive dialog)
4. Limited racial selection (Though not a deal breaker, from a personal perspective the variety made the first Dragon Age story much more interesting having diverse cultural backgrounds, but I understand why we're human) :D

But that's it for my first impressions, overall I love the game and applaud experimenting with a new approach to story-telling RPG game play, its why I keep buying the games.

I like how their eyeballs move now, just like Mass Effect. It makes them seem real. I've only just started playing it, and I think the changes won't bother me after a while. The same thing happened to me with Mass Effect 2. At first, I was thinking, "why isn't it like how it was before?"

I do miss equipping my party. I've always liked doing that.
