Playing through a second time as a mage, surprisingly good replay value.

I pre-ordered the game when I finished DA:O back in September and my hopes were high, I watched the YouTube videos, read all the articles and was ready. My game was delivered today, so with trembling hands I quickly installed it, within minutes I was ready to play. Ensuring I had all my snacks and warmth, I prepared myself for hours of mind-shattering game play. I hit play, I waited and...oh...I need to wait some more. This must be a mistake, I pre-ordered the game, it was delivered today, I should be able to play. Time to Google, which is when I discovered the thread about release times. It seems that everyone in the world is happily playing the game whilst I'm stuck here twiddling my thumbs. What was the point of pre-ordering? What was the point of ensuring I was free for today, what was the point of expecting anything but disappointment?

Nonetheless, my resolved and giddiness still strong, I "bought a plane ticket" and "moved to Asia"; I was finally ready to play. I hit play, I logged in, I clicked on "New Game", the opening sequence started and then...hang on, who are these two people? Are those darkspawn? Do I attack? Why are the graphics so bad?

I hit options and noticed that my graphics were at "High", odd, the game looked like it had been designed back in '04. Nonetheless I carried on, I attacked the dark"they look nothing like the originals"spawn, I killed them, an OG”looks nothing like the original"re appeared and I killed him as well. Then HOLY MOTHER OF A GOD! A DRAG--oh hang on, we're back with Dwarfy.

I pinched myself a few times, I didn't think I was playing a game, this must be one of those rodeo dreams, I was getting thrown all over the place.

To keep spoilers to a minimum, this game has been nothing but a disappointment. I played Origins and wanted more, I played Awakening and wanted more, I've been waiting for months for the game to be delivered, mouth dribbling at the thought of what I'll be getting. All I got was a fat middle finger to the face and £24.99 less in my bank account. The game play is choppy and not fluid, the graphics are worse than Origins, the storyline need another storyline and map, not to mention a guided tour master to be explained.

All in all, this game is just awful. I'm a few hours in and I'm considering leaving this game until I'm bored and want to become even more bored. RPG's don't have the action of FPS's, they don't have the mind engaging parameters of a Puzzle game. They have storyline and immersion, you need to draw your fans in and keep them interested enough so that they finish this game and want to buy the next one.

Bioware did this with DA:O, with DA:A and with ME:2. DA:2 on the other hand has enough immersion as the tarmac on a runway, there's no way to sink in. Add to this the way EA have treated people in the UK by ensuring that even though we ordered early, we're the last play. Dragon Age is nothing more than a Dragon fart.

Back to waiting for Bethesda to release Skyrim, Oblivion may not have had the storyline of Dragon Age, but a person can lose themselves in that game.

There is a lot of screen tearing in some parts of the game during scenes... Game froze again once more on me. Other than that no other problems. Finally did ever side mission, but realized too late I spent too much money and ran out of side missions. Had to get aid to start up story... Fights are harder now. Random boss fights. Great job!

Oh Side missions actually feel like they are parts of main game. Getting to know the town and the people, Story pulling me in. No complaints for story now. When I have more time to play Ill report back. In the "Roads" with "Enchantment?" at the moment.

I'm too tired to be angry any more...Now I'm just sad. It's fun...kinda. But it is a gesture of disloyalty to the avid fans of Bioware. It's basically Dynasty Warriors meets the Dragon Age Universe. And the lore IS the absolute only reason I'm playing this game. I'm going to hold out on condemning Bioware. They are my favorite gaming company and I really hope they get the message that the people who have been buying their games year in year out are hurting right now. I understand companies make money, that's what they do but this is not going to gain them the popularity vote. I mean, Jesus Christ look at the damn user metacritic score! Hell, look at the critic score- 8.3 for a contemporary Bioware game? That's the first time in a while that a Bioware game wasn't automatically slated for a nomination in all of those RPG of the year titles. Truth is, I love you Bioware...And I have to believe that you won't cheat on me with those Australipithicene Afarensis console gamers anymore but...OH MY GOD YOU'RE A ****!!!! (crying ensues)

Tough to do without spoilers, but here goes. On the whole, I'm enjoying it.

LIKES:
- Rivalry. It's a much more realistic way of looking at relationship dynamics.
- New Anders. Don't get me wrong, I adore Awakenings Anders to the point of obsession, but I appreciate DA2 Anders too, just in a different way. I only wish I could talk to him more.
- Varric. He's pure gold.
- Combat. I like being able to dodge AoEs by hiding behind pillars or around corners.
- Story. Yes, it's a bit here, there, and everywhere, but I like that. It feels more realistic. In real life, you don't always know what's coming next. I like the lack of linearity.
- Consequences. I really like how things have a way of coming back to haunt you.
- Framed narrative. I'm not saying that every game should be like this, but I am enjoying the "story within a story" approach.
- Better models for the humans, especially with the shoulders and the faces.
- Helmet toggle. Thank the Maker!
- Funny junk treasure. That people are willing to pay for, even if it's only a few coppers. Some of it has me in fits!
- Companion home bases. I like that they all aren't standing around in my house, and I like visiting them in their homes. I just wish they would say more when I got there.
- Better blood splatter. Like how it's opaque now. It looks more like real blood and less like red cake decorating gel. I also like how it disappears faster. If I were covered in somebody else's blood, I'd be looking for a washcloth as soon as possible.
- Personalized skill sets. You can have 2 characters of the same base class in the party at once without one of them being useless.
- Archery. It's actually useful!

DISLIKES:
- Not enough dialogue. Seriously. I liked having the ability to check in with my companions at the end of the day in DA:O. I seriously grieved when it was omitted from Awakenings and I'm terribly disappointed to find that conversations have been reduced even further. I can't wait for the mods that replace the fallback floaty text with a real dialogue menu. I don't care if it's voiced. I just want it.
- Dialogue wheel. I'm constantly baffled by the things coming out of my Hawke's mouth, and not always in a good way. I've stopped even reading the "suggestions" and now go by icons, since the paraphrasing is woefully misleading.
- Character creation. Some of my favorite sliders are gone! Just gone. That said, the eyebrows are better, and cheek widening is more grounded in anatomy.
- Unnatural eye colors and lack of eyebrow colors. Running a blond, red-haired, or lighter brunette character with dark eyebrows... :P
- Static companion armor. I'm lugging around all this sweet gear, and the only person who can use it is me!
- Inventory icons. Yes, it is probably far cheaper to make all the icons look the same, but it's annoying. And ugly. Icon Project for DA2, anyone?
- Inventory descriptions. I do realize that somebody had to write all of that, and inventing histories for the many items must have been a real chore, but I miss it.
- Cartoonish darkspawn. 'Nuff said.
- Everything is too clean, especially when it shouldn't be. No piles of books littering the floor, no gravel-strewn passages, no cobwebs in the dungeons, no litter in the streets. Gleaming floors in the Deep Roads? Really?
- Companions are poor hosts. When I visit them in their homes, they have nothing to say to me. I like how the characters visit each other when you show up for a chat quest, but I do wish they would be more talkative when I drop by uninvited.
- Excessive rogue/warrior combat animations. You know what I'm talking about.

Sounds like you never played an RPG before or your taste are very narrow. I've played 100s to thousands and they all have different battle systems ranging from turn base, stratagy, action, multiplayer, turn action, puzzle strat  and everything in between. Now there is Shooter RPG with ME 1-2 and this (DA2) is Action RPG with a ton of story if you bother with side missions or just do the main story. Their new approach to the story is odd at first, but if you give it time, it seems solid. If you were playing on PS3 and didnt have your custom music during the times the music is absent I can kind of understand getting bored at some parts during side missions, (Hint Hint Bioware Patch!!!), but other than that? Give it time.

Very disappointed after the demo. Gone are the smooth sword strokes and combat animations, now the melee attacks look like something out of a street fighter game. Graphically, I really don't see that much of an improvement in either the way the characters look or the environment. I had this pre-ordered but don't think I'm gonna waste my money. Very disappointed to see BioWare make such a half hearted effort. Hopefully Mass Effect 3 won't follow suit. I haven't been this disappointed in a sequel since Obsidian butchered Knights of the Old Republic 2. The online reviews I've seen have been 8's and 8.5's and that's being extremely generous from what I've seen. One review stated that there's very little change of scenery as almost the whole story takes place in on city. This is not the quality I've come to expect from BioWare and it's apparent that DA2 is a rush job of a game designed to separate loyalist of the DAO from there money before they can figure out they've been had. *Edit* I removed my post since it might of been a bit offensive. I think we are all very passionate about our likes and dislikes of Bioware games, some of us are very loyal followers. That being said, some of you guys might want to take a breather, the game is not perfect, but it is still really really really good. Give it more time than just the Demo!!

Also, if you liked the look and feel of the combat more in DA:O compared to this one, I think you might need to have your eyes checked :) I LOVE the combat in this one, I find myself more interested in the fights then I ever did in DA:O :)

I only got the game now. Busy installing it. I felt so so, after playing the demo. But so far I'm dissapointed looking at the terrible manual. Really Bioware? A black and white manual with a really really bad screenshot in it even if it's the signature edition?

So far, I'm liking it:

The quests make it feel more episodic. Instead of the feeling of reading a 1000 pg. epic novel, they turned it around and make it feel more like a monthly-issued serial (comic books, short stories, etc.). It works, in my opinion, better since the story arch takes place over a significant amount of time (some thing I've seen other players forget).

The updated-graphics are a lot easier on the eyes, for us 360 owners. The animations and art-style come together and each time I cast fireball I want to sit there and go "ooh, pretty...". The environments are a lot less drab and I feel the new design is a better fit than the dull-brown semi-realistic approach of the first DA.

Combat is a blast. I liked combat in Origins, but this is definitely more satisfying with its in your face flow of combat. It's a little button mashy (what?) but having to keep an eye on your party and actually properly setting up their "spells" (eh, I play WoW, what can I say) lend to a demand for some strategy that throws back to Origins.

All in all, I feel like taking the franchise in a new, flashier direction has actually improved it. The characters are likable, the story is there for those who want it and the quests are varied enough for those who just want to go and blow dudes up (we all have that want once in a while). The stylized visuals and episodic feel match well with the moody story. I'm not finished with the game yet and my views may change as I progress through the game. So far, I have very few complaints.  Oh... and I did heed some advice and installed the game on my 360 for a "more smooth" experience.  So far:

I am enjoying it in general so far.  I will say that there are signs that corners were cut during production - recycling of mission  maps, removal of item descriptions, etc.  But overall it's prety good, if maybe not up to BioWare's usual standard.

WHAT I LIKE:

-The story  - I like that DA2 is the story of a person and not a plot.  I like that Hawke has a family and family history - adds some nice flavor to the game, rather than being a generic fantasy orphan/loner.  I know some people discagree with this, but that's how I feel.
-The music - it's completely awesome
-The characters are mostly compelling.
-That every character has their own uniique talent tree
-Friendship/Rivalry - continuing Bioware's improvement of PC-NPC relationships.  I still think the system can continue to get better, but they are definitely moving in the right direction here.
-Archery is very good.  I am playing an archer and loving it.

WHAT I DON't LIKE

-As mentioned, seems like corners were cut during production - recylcing of mission maps, etc.
-Armor: They got caught straddling the fence.  They partially streamlined it by
removing companions' apparel, but also left in all the loot drops, ect.  The end reult is that you are denied the relative pleasure of customizing your companions' appearance, and at the same time stuck with the tedium of backpack/junk inventory management - at the very least they should pick a side.
-Removal of item descriptions - I liked those little tidbits of detail/lore, sad to see them go
-Combat a bit TOO fast paced.  It get what they were going for, and they did fix many frustrations i had with DAO, but most of the time it is over before I really get to think about tactics.
-Kirkwall feels like it should be livlier - I don't think we need Assassin's Creed level crowds, but a little more bustle would be an improvement
-Anders' new voice/personanilty.  Loved him in Awakenings - but if they were going to change him that much, I'm not sure why they didn't just use  completely new character.
-Lack of Arcane Warrior or other "Spellsword" path - it's my favorite subclass to play in RPGs. I wish it was in.

More later - the jury is still out on some things, but i won't know how I feel until I finish the game.

The good:

So far everything in the game has blown me away. I love the non-traditional story, the PC is working up from literally nothing to become the most sought after figure in Thedas. You see yourself progressing, you see the world progressing all around you. I like that when I bring Aveline along and someone smarts off about the Guard, she chimes in. No more party members staying stone silent while they are accused of something.

For that matter, the voiced protagonist is an off the charts improvement, no more mute, blank stares from my pc. I love Kirkwall, what an awesome place. Again, it's very non-traditional to run a fantasy rpg that takes place in a big city, but it's long overdue and I for one am happy to see it.

Graphics and new design sooooooo much better.

Meh:

20 hours in @ the begining of Act 2 my party is finally starting to show some real cohesion and developing relationships with one another. I don't mind the game building up to it, but waiting until Act 2, well I just haven't connected to "My Party" as a well... party. I developed individual relationships but no camp feel = no party feel. It does add an element of realism though.

The Bad:

Man I miss my high overhead cam. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it's just hard to deal with tactically. That to me, is the only real big loss. Also, when I add a new party member for the first time I get to choose their talent upgrades but not their attribute upgrades. That is terribly annoying. Everything else is stellar.

Just wanted to quote because I agree (and said as much in my post) - the "episodic" approah is just as valid as the "Epic Quest" approach, and in the case of DA2 more appropriate. IMO, of course.

My friend Max recently wrote about an aspect of the game, the exploration/narrative dissonance that seems to be dividing people on the games 'success'

"[T]he player's own sense of exploration and discovery is more important than the objective game design. An air of mystery and a sense of history—of things having happened before the player character's emergence on the scene—can go a long way in this regard.... The result [of encouraging this curiosity] is a recurring narrative feedback loop of exploration and discovery, fed by a combination of the player's curiosity and her satisfaction."

http://boomculture.blogspot.com/

Perhaps its the narrow of focus of conveying a very specific narrative and 'experience' at the expense of exploration/curiosity, is really the games downfall, or perhaps that is too romantic, lets say keeps it a solid 'B' rather than an 'A'.

I loved DA:O a lot, played it mostly as rogue/mage, was really looking forward to this one... and big disappointment. I understand that game design and ownership, writing, art etc have changed but did not expect that it would be a step down in several areas. Overall game feels very different ( if you do not expect it to be like DA:O then disapointment would not be there i guess)

LIKES:
- my character actually talks! (face moving and all :)
- a bit more mobility during battle (e.g. you can run away from attack easier and will not be hit when you're no longer there)
- combat moves look neat! (if you're quick enough to see them)
- female bodies have thinner shoulders and less manly backs (comes with huge boobies too - seems like a cheap trick but hey it sells, i get it - kinda distracting though if it's your characters mom or sister we're talking about though)

DISLIKES:

- Mr.POTATO HEADS - especially male faces - seriously what is up with doughnut ears?... huge cheekbones, narrow mouths??? every character except dwarfs have SAME WIDTH mouth - wierd... E.g., compare certain characters from DA:O that you meet again in DA2 and you will be in shock (well i was)
Sidenote: Sebastian Eyes look in different directions, very distracting, poor fella..., some characters have possessed eye look like they're glowing - sometimes it seems excessive (revered mother, seriously? or  a demon??)

- PLANET OF APES or darkspawn? - not sure... looks like planet of apes now to me... not scary very comical but not in a good way - reminds me of movies from 60's and 70's (bad ones) look of what scary is...

- simplification of textures (NO METAL? - all armor looks like from Halloween Adventures plastic props)

- simplification of forms, loss of "fluidity" if you must... (e.g. horns look broken not like a smooth twist -  very basic...)

- boring combat on high difficulty level - looks of tactical thinking during battles - i mean there must be a balance? i dont intend the game to be all about tactics but c/mon give me something to use my brain

- COPY+PASTE maps - frustruating, at least change something! Sebastian DLC was also disappointing - so little so simple, everything we saw already again - exrta 5 mins for that much money?...

- Combat moves while very cool you will not have time to enjoy them - it happens so fast like your character moving from one pose to another - more like several pictures instead of continuous moves, would love if they slowed it down...i hoped for at least some finishing moves at least some times....

-contrast is wierd, no color saturation (i understand it was by design) more build on tontrast of darkness/light - not really my thing - mentally can be exausting

 - quinary plastic surgery ( i hope no genophage was used :)

- aromor designs took a nose-dive

- minimap is not helpful (have to resort to fullview way too often)

- (this one is silly but.... sexy time sceenes feel less intimate)

p.s. i just dont understand when things are changed which were good in 1st game - why not improve on 1st game instead of redesign?
there, i vented a bit - just had to get it off my chest (i'm also bothered by people who compare new games as always being worse then originals but in this case i'm going there...)

I've played about 8 or so hours after getting my PC signature edition and I just feel
indifferent.  Or disappointed.  Or just bored with it.  I can't even really tell.  I hope this
changes -- but there are some gripes I have already that I need to express.

Mass Effect 2 was awesome.  The visuals, characters, environments, gameplay and
writing were all extremely polished, and because of that I got over my disappointment
about the lack of inventory rather quickly.  I went back to ME1 to play through for another
save and found it nearly unplayable.  I wish people would stop thinking Dragon Age 2
is comparable to that -- because it's not anywhere near the same level of improvement.

The combat change is fine with me, but the constant exploding enemies is facepalm
worthy.  After a while, whatever "cool" factor there is in the violence wears off and it just
becomes patently absurd that when you slice a sword through an enemy or shiv them
a few times, they explode into a mess of severed head and limbs.

The environments and characters do look fairly pretty from a graphical point of view
(especially with the PC texture pack) , but some of the city exterior is still just very bland,
empty and half-developed.  The city is populated by identical groups of low-resolution
"ghost people" standing around, who you and party members can just straight up walk
THROUGH.  This bothered me.  Why couldn't they just add the solid models?  Would
that really be so difficult?  It's one more thing that adds to the impression that this game
is very half-assed and rushed.  The other semi-hilarious thing is when you get into a fight
on the streets during the day, enemies are exploding all around you and pedestrians are
just walking on through the chaos casually, like nothing is going on.

The side quests also seem half-thought out and thrown in at the last minute... like the items
you find in chests while wandering around and you return to random people around the
city you never even met.  You don't even get a dialogue cut-scene with them where they at
least explain why the item was important to them for flavor.  Right-click on them, and that's
that, done.  Okay.

The writing for this game also seems off.  A lot of the dialogue feels stilted and forced. The
only moments that really gripped me so far were when Flemeth appeared and was her
awesome self.  Merrill is a fairly interesting character, but the exposition given from Marethari
and the entire recruitment process felt very poor.  For whatever reason, the recruiting of party
members across the board felt awkward and unnatural.  I can't pinpoint exactly why yet, but
the quality of the conversations feels inferior to both DA:O and ME 1 + 2.

I'm imagining that after the success of Mass Effect 2, the douchebags at EA basically said
to Bioware -- look, the ME2 formula obviously works and makes a lot of money, we want you
to replicate that with Dragon Age for the fantasy setting.  As a result we have a game that feels
like it's having an identity crisis, re-conceptualized from scratch in a barely a year and a half.

I can't help but thinking that if Bioware had been given even another six months or a year on
this, it would feel like a much more complete and rewarding game.  Or not, who knows?  All
I know is this was the first game I ever pre-ordered and it will probably be the last.  (Pre-order
for full-price and pay for various price-inflated DLC, or get the ultimate edition later for cheap?
That should really be an easy choice.)  Was I expecting too much?  I simply expected a Bioware
game that feels fully fleshed out.  I loved KOTOR, loved both ME games and Origins; but this
one just feels very, very mediocre so far.

Adding my personal review to the list for the PC version of the game.

Likes:
Faster combat over DA:O
Voiced player character
Dialogue wheel
Rivalry system
Method of selecting and advancing Talents/Spells
Great voice acting, especially characters like Merril
Characters seemed to have different body types
More options in conversations over DA:O
Importing DA:O saves so that the world reflects decisions made from the player's personal experience
Suttle effects like hair moving in the wind and fire reflecting on your character's face

Dislikes:
Only 2 romance options for a straight character (granted DA:O only had 2 as well)
Inventory for party members is so limited
No finishing moves in normal combat (but I understand it wasn't possible this time)
There are times when I just don't feel engaged in the story.

Additionally, I haven't played past Act 1 yet.  I played it all day yesterday and I am still in Act 1.  That's not a complaint but leads up to what I about to say.  The story.  The story has me interested but I haven't seen enough to say how well it was done yet.  There are a lot of side quests and while playing through those I am seeing how decisions made in DA:O have impacted part of Hawke's story but nothing dramatic so far.  I think it is great to have so many quests but unless the story can keep me more engaged it is easy to have no motivation beyond gaining levels and finding gear.

I'm imagining that after the success of Mass Effect 2, the douchebags at EA basically said
to Bioware -- look, the ME2 formula obviously works and makes a lot of money, we want you
to replicate that with Dragon Age for the fantasy setting.  As a result we have a game that feels
like it's having an identity crisis, re-conceptualized from scratch in a barely a year and a half.
.

Playing Devil's Advocate: I can imagine that this is more of a sense of "how do you get the square peg into the round hole?".  ME2 was plenty flashy and was an excellent game in its own merit; but most of all, ME2 was uber-succesful racked in near perfect reviews and brought EA oodles o' moolah.  So why not go to the same developers and say "Wow, that worked!  Now make Dragon Age 2 the same way."
Like any entertainment franchise, there're going to be those who are put off by the changes and those who'll embrace them.  The only proof they'll (EA) take in consideration in this is sales.  If it sells well, then they'll continue the franchise and probably tell them to keep doing what they've been doing.  I think and hope that the developers at BioWare are better than that and actually take in consideration the opinions of the fans.  I digress...

It's almost as good as Origins, and considering that Origins was an amazing game that makes DA2 pretty good.

I would have expected more from a sequel though. From the impression of a few hours of gameplay an expansion to Origins would have served me better.

One of the few things that nagged me a bit about Origins was a few glitches and annoyances in the combat system. DA2 is only slightly more annoying. Pathing is slightly worse, the interface is slightly worse, and the camera angles are slightly worse.
In Origins the combat felt a bit too fast paced, resulting in a lot of pausing and generally lacking a fluid feel. That got slightly worse in DA2.

The way characters switch targets and move at random seems about the same, and the poor default behaviour of tactics feels similar.

Some things has been simplified. I don't understand the reason why. The generic armor of the henchmen is a bit of a loss of depth, no biggie but but it removes some of the RPG feel.

The conversation options lack a bit of depth. Very often I don't really know what a conversation option will do until after I select it. And the 3 symbols seems too generic. I guess it's meant for an audience that doesn't like to read, but in that case it's weird to market a game with so much text and backstory for that kind of audience.

I guess the graphics may be better, but I don't really notice that. The graphics and animations in Origins were good enough for the genre.

The sequel lacks design direction. The game seems to try to accomodate an audience that is too broad and by doing that lost some of the original feel.

This may seem very negative but i'ts not a bad game at all, just a slight step down in quality and a bit of a disappointment.

p.s. i just dont understand when things are changed which were good in 1st game - why not improve on 1st game instead of redesign?
there, i vented a bit - just had to get it off my chest (i'm also bothered by people who compare new games as always being worse then originals but in this case i'm going there...)

The very same question was asked by ME1 fans after playing ME2. It has never been answered....

I find myself quite dissapointed with Dragon Age 2. Ever since I saw a review were they talked about making it easyer I had a bad feeling in my gut about the game. Sadly my gut was right.

The Good:
Wonderfull voice acting as always, visually nice too look at. nothing else comes to mind.

The Bad

Were do I start? Dragon Age Origins was perfect in my eyes. It had it all just as it should be. This game however is like they took all that tasty RPG fat and tripped it off. leaving you with a dry slab of meat. No changing armor for your other toons? All the RPG fun stuff when you level up is gone?. its just 3 points into a stat tree and 1 point into a talent tree.

All inn all I'd say that this game is no longer a RPG. It's more of a Hack and Slash with some dumbed down chat options were you can choose from "Good" "Silly" and "Hardass"

Its Baldurs Gate to Neverwinter Nights all over again. Baldurs gate games were awsome. Neverwinter nights. Good game but just not the same.

Oh and. the game is way to easy.  I play it on Hard. and you can basicly win all fights just by kiting mobs in circles :|
