It really pains me to say this, but I am very disappointed with what Bioware did with this game. Over the years, I have become a huge Bioware fan. I absolutely LOVED Knights of the Old Republic, and the Mass Effect series is shaping up to be one of the best that I have ever played. I am really looking forward to Star Wars: The Old Republic as well. Dragon Age: Origins was an incredible game, and I really couldn't stop playing it.

Sadly, I cannot say the same for Dragon Age 2. It's almost as if Bioware took a BIG step backwards from their other games, and it's pretty disappointing. The graphics are mediocre at best on the X360. The dialogue is VERY similar to Mass Effect 2 (which, without a doubt, has an incredible interactive dialogue system), however you can tell they just copy-pasted it from Mass Effect 2 into this game. The way the people turn and walk away after talking to you is IDENTICAL to Mass Effect 2. That left me very disappointed.

I also did not like how caves, dungeons, and houses were all recycled. It made the game feel very repetitive, which was something that I thought Bioware was good at handling. Although the game takes place over a decade, Kirkwall (as well as the Wounded Coast and such) does not change at all, which is something I find very hard to believe. Even after 3 years, there HAS to be something different in the city.

My final complaint (for now, anyway) is that this game is VERY buggy. I've seen people walk through stairs, sit down during dialogue then RAPIDLY stand back up, and I've even had some companions get stuck in fences and such. The BIG thing that frustrated me was that my gameplay was interrupted numerous times (particularly in the latter part of the game) by loading screens. I would be fighting a boss and the game would pause, and it would say "Loading..." in the bottom right corner, while little bits of sound would come out of the speakers. This would happen for up to a minute at a time, and it was INCREDIBLY frustrating.

I've had some fun with this game, but not near as much as other Bioware games. I could list more negatives, but I honestly don't feel like ranting about this game more than I have to. I really hope Bioware learns from their mistakes with this game, stops trying to rush games for the money & be more considerate of those who will buy their games, and gets their act together before they release Mass Effect 3, The Old Republic, and Dragon Age 3 (if there even IS one).

I have only played a bit of the game and at the moment I'm planning on uninstalling it and placing at at the back of my games pile. If you enjoyed the game style for Dragon age then I think this game lets the name down. It's now to arcade like and not RPG. I may be wrong and the the game goes back to DA orgins style later on. The only simpliarities with the orgional game is the Histroy and the name. my score 0 out of 10

Torn on DA2.

Pros:
- I am surprised to enjoy the voice on my f. Hawke. I was all set to dislike it but I really don't mind it.
- Love the banter between the different companions as we walk around
-The combat makes me feel like I am really a rogue jumping around in the action. I love the new spell effects too and I am looking forward to my mage run.
-The new updated graphics

Cons:
-Those stupid "Oh thank you I did not know I had misplaced it" short quests. These have no soul/feeling to them. Could I at least speak to the person or have more than a lousy codex entry?
-Those dungeons and caves that all look the same with those maps with blocked passage. Really?? I was used to better quality in a Bioware game.
-Companions have great banter but the dialogue?!! When they speak they are well written and compelling BUT you never get to talk! I don't mind going to the "houses" but they never have anything to say. I miss the dialogue concept of Origin so much.
-Romance... I flirt with you 2 years ago and now I should invite you to move in??? Again weird, rushed and I don't feel like I know the companions... more like they are people I hang out with that over share too much once in a while.
-More NPC talk. Kirkwall is populated but feels so empty.

Indifferent: The new skill trees and armor management.

I was no expecting DA:O but I was expecting the same level of compelling story telling and attachment in my companions. I enjoyed DA2 but I did not love it. I feel it misses what DA:O had; the way it would wrap you around and you ended up caring for the characters.

I kinda have to disagree with the negative sentiment towards DA2. It feels like much less of a difference between DA2 and DAO to me than it did between ME2 and ME1---the combat is still pretty much the same, just faster and without an isometric view. The dialog options are still pretty much the same, just voiced. Even the equipment is pretty much the same sort of stuff, just shinier and better-looking.

I'm about 14 hours in.

The thing I like the most about DA2 is that the quests seem to not always have a right answer. There are a lot of moments where I have to stop and think really hard about what the consequences of the choice I'm making are, and it seems like those consequences do come back and bite you in the future if you're not careful. This is my favorite part about the game---even in DAO, it seemed like there was always a "good" option where things would work out for the best, an "evil" option where stuff was just worse, and then some middle options.

Here, there are no right answers.

There are only a couple of things about the game that I think are worse than DAO.
* The lack of a mobile camera makes it difficult for you to aim spells like fireball carefully. I don't mind the lack of an isometric camera, but when I'm paused, WASD should move the camera around.

* Lots of useless equipment. If I'm a mage, how come I keep getting armor sets for warriors that I can't equip, and can't give to any of my companions? Weapons are fine, but getting heavy armor when I'm not a class that uses that is sort of silly. It's like how you'd always find barrels full of assault rifles when playing as a biotic in ME1, except you can't give the armor to your companions.

* Being restricted to Kirkwall and the immediately surrounding area is a bit of a bummer. It's alleviated somewhat because Kirkwall is so huge, but it'd be nice to see more of the Free Marches than just Kirkwall.

Metacritic says it all.  Look at the user review summaries alone.

How does a game get Critics' reviews at 84 and a User score of 3.9?

Glad to see I'm not alone.

"EA really wanted to capitalize on the success of Origins, so the game was really being pushed hard to be released now. ."
ea have ruined a game that  could have over shadowed the first

+ Junk tab in inventory management

I like being able to move everything I want to sell into the "junk" tab so I can sell it all at once.  That is nice.  But I do not like that the addition of the "junk" tab comes with a huge increase in "junk" loot.

+ Streamlined ingredient gathering & potion/rune making

Sorry, I have to disagree.  What you call "streamlined," I call "dumbed down."  I liked the complexity of the crafting elements in DA:O.  But then, I'm one of those nutcases who loves the utterly insane alchemy/potion crafting part of The Witcher, so there you go...  I also liked being able to craft in the field, as it were.  I found it immensely entertaining to imagine my characters actually sitting on the side of the road, jerry-rigging traps.

+ Effective access to healing and stamina/lyrium potions

Um... are you referring to the ability to bind potions to hotkeys?  Because, if I'm not mistaken, you could bind potions to hotkeys in DA:O, too.

Overall, I'm enjoying the game. There are a million things I could comment on, but I will restrict myself to one positive and one negative.

Pro: Stream lined game mechanics mostly work well, removing the unnecessary hassles and keeping the fun. Combat is well tuned. Bioware retained its tactical style from Origins (at least if you play on Hard difficulty or up) while also giving it a much faster feel. Changes to crafting and inventory management are also welcome. Some will call it dumbed down, but really it just removed a lot of the drudge work.

Con: The narrative of the game is not as immersive as Origins. I like the story, but in trying to fix Origins' wordiness problem, the writers went too far in the other direction. It was nice sometimes in Origins to have an extended conversation with an NPC. It broke up the pace of the game, and the well written dialogue made you feel like you really were in this strange world. In DA2, I don't think I've seen a single conversation that lasted more than a minute or two. Occasionally I've been sent on a mission without having any idea what is really going on beyond "find this, kill that". Perhaps the lack of world building is inevitable with sequels, but learning about the setting was a big part of what made DAO so great. If Bioware does another sequel, they should consider ways to bring back that sense of world building and awe that a lot of us felt with DAO. A little more conversation wouldn't hurt.

You know what I find funny. I've been playing RPGs since the first Dragon Warrior was released way back when on Nintendo. Ever since then people have been complaining about having to press a and then having to wait for some type of action to happen. Now in today's RPGs (Mass Effect series and now Dragon Age 2) we're complaining because we now can press a button and something happens immediately. I actually enjoy Dragon Age 2 and I don't consider myself a "dumbed down" RPG player as some people have coined it. Now the game does have some flaws and I'll list the and the pros below:

Pros:
Love the graphics
I actually like the fast pace (playing on 360)
Interesting companions
Cool story so far (trying to raise money for the expedition. I have enough just trying to finish all the quests)
Plenty of money opportunities (since I only have to worry about armor for my main character you can sell all the other stuff)
No silent hero (Nice to actually be able to hear your selections when you pick one)
Heavy armors actually being gender specific
Making females more feminine.

Cons:
Not being able to customize armor (the extra money from selling it is a pro though)
Female breast size being crazy (my wife commented that one of Isabella's breasts is bigger than her head)
Too many kill explosions

Now I may have a few more pros and cons to add but right now I'm at work (the only reason I'm typing this and not playing). One thing that I use to gauge a good game is how addictive it is and to be honest I'm finding myself to be quite addicted.

Question: I don't intend on finishing DA:O before starting DA:2 (I just didn't like DA:O on 360). Will I be forfeiting a great experience by essentially starting DA:2 from scratch with no import? PLEASE NO SPOILERS.

The stories arent that conncected, you might want to stop at the begining of act 3. u can import your dao save into the game, but i havent seen a huge impact.

Well I am about an hour into the game and I am rather dissapointed, where has all the customisation gone that we had in DA/DA:O?

Im afraid you only score 1/5 for that, this is not a good start...

Installation of the game was smooth, until I went to unlock all the bonus content in the "Signature Edition", which required me to do all the work myself, so that only gets a 2/5 score due to the headache you caused me...

Graphics are nice, but the camera angles are spoiling it, The constant "follow" and "jitter" of the camera makes me feel like I am about to be sick while playing it.  2/5 for that until you fix the restrictive camera issues,  the old camera system in DA gave you far more customisation, and being on follow mode is ticking me off!

Dialogue selection is a little too restrictive for my taste, and you do not always get exactly what you wish for when you do make a dialogue choice, also some of the responses are a little off character sometimes, or at least not what I expected, so it gets a 2/5 for that.

The fighting is a little too hectic sometimes and because of the camera issues, can be hard to get a hold on things during intense battles, however the mage improvements are fun and unexpected so you get a 3/5 for that, just a shame the camera can make it hard to sort things out on the battlefield.

The map system is a bit messy too, your trying too do much onscreen, and it shows, 2/5 for that...

Soundtrack is top notch, as are the story style cut scenes, so they are they only aspect to get 5/5 so far. (cry)

I loved the DA series, but I am very dissapointed in the direction you have taken it. Maybe my impression will change as I get further into the game.

The only "surprise" so far has been that a previous DA character makes an appearance, so it has me confused a little, is this a prequel? or a omni-prequel-sequel?

I would have rated it higher, but the poor customisation and camera problems have bogged this down from a  "must have" into a "maybe".

/sigh

DA2 story begins with the champion's family fleeing the darkspawn invasion of Lothering, so it overlaps with DA:O and the character's appearance is not anachronistic.  (Hope that wasn't a spoiler.)  It isn't really a prequel, because it starts *during* the DA:O timeline, but then everything after the prologue takes place post-DA:O and Awakenings.

After 16 hours of gameplay, the below is my personal opinion to add to the mix.  I also want to add that this game is still miles ahead of other current games in the genre!  Posted Image

Inventory:

I like the addition of the "Junk" container, I think that's a smart move. Especially with the ability to add crappy inventory items to it and then selling it all at the click of a button at the store.

I understand that I am able to upgrade my companions' armour, but not being able to give them new items is boring.

Art / Action:

Wow, this is a pretty game. I love the art style and I find myself looking around just to look! As for the action, I am in love. I know its unrealistic, but its finally a lot of fun to play, if a little too easy, but I can change the mode if I wanted to.

Quests/Storyline:

I think there's a major problem here. Everything feels like a sidequest because I have no idea what the main quest is! Its just a snapshot of someone's time doing stuff and I never liked those kind of books or movies. I like things with more substance, twists, turns, a meaningful story to tell, character development, a conclusion at the end (mind you I dont know what the end of this game has in store for me, but I feel like its going to be one of those movies where the character walks on a beach and then looks out into the water and the credits suddenly roll........ leaving the audience thinking "what was this story about?")

Characters:

Bioware has created some interesting characters again, but they don't want to talk to me.
They only want to talk when they feel like it. I cannot initiate any deep converstaions with them when I want to and this is disappointing.

I want to get to know them better but it feels forced since its not happening on the fly. So this part of the game is missing some soul. It could all be related to the Quests/Storyline... no definable plot = less character connection. DAO felt like "us against the world", where in DA2 it feels like we've been grouped together for no good reason.

The City:

I like that there are people moving about, but from what I've been hearing, we stay in the city for the entire game and most levels are reused. I've already encountered the reuse of "mine" type levels. I really liked that I walked into an NPC and she threw her hands in the air and blessed the maker (or something to that effect), details like that go a long way to making the city come more alive.

Romances:

I am *so* thrilled that most or everyone is bisexual! Groundbreaking!!

The Dog:

I'm so glad he's in the game!

Mail:

I like the idea of getting mail. The end.

Like the improved smoothness of gameplay and combat. I found the stiff jerky combat in the first game nearly intolerable after about 2 playthroughs.

Love the voice acting. Male Hawke is great and female Hawke is just plain EPIC.

Love the volume of quests. Quite a few very good side quests.

Opening story/connection to the characters and story just PALES in comparison to City Elf and Human Noble IMO.

Relationships between Hawke and the companions and between the companions themselves is just plain dry compared to DA Origins. I couldn't WAIT to get back to camp for conversations before. The whole dynamic is much weaker in this game and I haven't any interest in persuing any of the romance options so far. Also, the knowlege that Bioware really wussed out in that area in ME2, and the suspicion that it will continue in that direction also leaves me disinterested in that option (Giving the family values crowd input in ANY kind of art rarely leads to a good result).

I'll say this in defense of the main story. The scenario in DA 2 makes it FAR more plausible to be doing petty errands for people for coin.

I had a very difficult time role playing some of those side missions in the Mass Effect games and DA Origins because of the urgent save the world/universe business at hand for the main character.

The errand running/questing in DA 2 meshes with the main story much better. At least so far, I haven't beaten the game yet.

Well, as it turns out, reviewing a game when you're less than halfway through is downright stupid. I must apologize to Bioware and retract some of my complaints above. After some marathon gaming yesterday evening, I found the Companion dynamic really picked up and found myself much more attached to my character.

I think this time, I'll hold off on a full blown review until I've actually FINISHED the game. Gee what a concept.

P.S. Thank you Bioware for giving Female Hawke a lady's walk (and run). Nice to have a female char that doesn't walk like Bruce Willis for once (hope this trend continues in Mass Effect 3 since I can't tolerate the male shep voice acting).

The good things
  • Improved crafting system makes it easier and not dependant on companions
  • Dialogue wheel is easy on the eyes and works great
  • No need to fully equip your companions.
  • Awesome combat, it's fast and bloody.
  • Meeting old characters from the game.
  • Armor and weapons look alot better.
  • Plenty of conversation between companions
  • No lack of money or items
  • Kirkwall is nicely populated and easy to navigate in.
The bad things:
  • Too little darkspawn for my taste
  • Boring side quests and boring rewards (most of the time it's just money)
  • Reusing the same cave, sewer design is bad
  • No way to reset skills.
  • Little use of imported save game
  • Ugly elves
  • Cannot romance Aveline :(
  • Too many stores and hidden stores
And my biggest issue

The game at the beginning is boring, you spend most of my time doing boring MMO type quests. There are a few moments which are trully epic and only towards the end does the game get awesome. I wish the entire game was as awesome as the ending.

In comparison to DA:O, I am disappointed with how bioware has progressed the game with regards to game mechanics and dialog choices.

Pros:
Great story
As usual, love the decisions you get to make
Loved the mage class for the tactics

Cons:
Conversation wheel
Repetitive area design
Stuck in one city, doesn't feel nearly as epic
Limited ways to equip your companions

I enjoyed dragon age origins because it reminded me a lot of neverwinter nights, just... modernised. Conversational replies are listed as they are spoken, there were even feats for persuasion, etc... In short, far more of a traditional RPG.

In dragon age 2, however, they made the move from the dragon age origins style of play, to the mass effect style of play. I like both styles, don't get me wrong, but if I want to play with the mass effect style of play, I'd play mass effect.

Maybe it's just me missing neverwinter nights. Neverwinter nights 2 was awful.

I play the PC version, and am just about to go into the Deep Roads.

Likes:
- Highly addictive (who needs sleep?!)
- Graphics are nice
- Interesting characters, very well written
- MAGES ARE AMAZING!!! (I preferred playing a rogue on DA:O)
- Combat: much easier to move around the field, everything is just more fluid
- Effects: I like making things go Boom!, plus exploding enemies w/ blood splattering everywhere are cool. Not particularly realistic, but, hey, it's a fantasy RPG :)
- Archers are soo much more fun right now. I played an archer through the demo once, and absolutely loved it :)
- Party banter: Varric to Bianca: "I'm sorry, baby...", Fenris: "I'm _not_ brooding", etc :) But then, BioWare has been great with this since Baldur's Gate :)
- The story: it reminds me a little bit of Planescape: Torment, a personal journey rather than your run-of-the-mill "save the world" scenario. I like how it is moving so far.
- Interacting with party members: I think it is better to have conversations with your companions restricted, since in DA:O I could get Allister to ask to bed my Warden in about an hour after Ostagar :P And then I'd have another 30 hrs of gameplay with a silent paramour :P It is very much like BG in this respect. I also like that you cannot please everybody, and have to think carefully about whom you're bringing along for every quest. It just makes things more challenging :)
- Flemeth rocks! :D

Neutral about:
- Voiced character: nice, but does not make a huge difference to me.
- Inventory: Cannot swap the armour for your characters, which makes sense in a way. You won't be able to just plop such a big piece of equipment on people, and have it fit perfectly everyone, male, female, Elf, Dwarf or Human...
- Cannot choose race at the beginning: Planescape: Tornment didn’t even allow the player to choose the gender of the Nameless One, and I still loved the game. It had one of the best stories I have ever played through. So, as long as the story is good, I don't mind being restricted in my choices here. Though, I would prefer to at least be able to choose the gender of my character.

Cons:
- Where is my isometric view?!!!! I want it back!!! It's sooo bloody hard to be tactical when you cannot pan out and view the entire battle field. I am playing on Hard not Nightmare... I don't even want to go to Nightmare without the isometric view. Even NWN had isometric view...
- Oh, the caves and environments outside Kirkwall... The same every time, doesn't matter what quest I am on.
- I wish I could browse through the character sheets and inventories of my party members while I am at my home base. It would make it so much easier to give everyone the proper weapons and equipment before heading out.
- The dialogue wheel is counter-intuitive. My character ends up saying things I don't expect, sometimes even quite the opposite of what I was aiming for. I think the options need better paraphrasing.
- The screen is too dark. My eyes are watering half the time I am playing, and I turned up the brightness everywhere I could. Of course, this is a problem only where there's no sunshine, but I am most of the time in some dank cave or lurking on the streets during night time... ugh... Group infravision or torches anyone? Couldn’t my mage turn her staff into a beacon, sort of like Gandalf?
- Someone’s a big fan of Avatar, what with the Elves looking like the white counterparts of the Na’vi.
- I’m not impressed with the user interface. It is very utilitarian, looking more appropriate for a sci-fi centered game than a fantasy RPG. I liked DA:O much better. It had colour, and looked like it belonged in a storybook, which was great. Well, I guess when you’re racing against deadlines, you have to simplify...
- I like big blades and I cannot lie... :P Those two-handers look a bit extreme, even for a fantasy game. If it were anime, I wouldn’t mind, but it is inspired by medieval Europe... Just sayin’.

Overall, I think this game is a lot of fun to play. It has a great combat system (minus the lack of isometric view), the graphics are attractive and the characters are well written. I haven’t finished it yet, so I cannot really say much about the story. So far, so good. I have read the spoilers, but prefer to reserve judgement for when I will actually get to the end. I’d give it an 8/10 

Hashemg , I support what you said ---> except the story part. Problem is a Polish company created such a story in an rpg that now all USA and other companies are being rushed to high-standarts in the story creation. No game in the world has better story than the one I meant.
Ofc.,some1'll disagree but I don't care. Story in DA2 is not as great as I expected.
