I've been enjoying all the great Bioware games since BG1, well except for ME (which I disliked so much that I uninstalled it after 10 mins of trying it - heh).
With DA2, I'm just a few hours in and in general I'm very pleased. So, here's a summary:

Like:
  • changes done to talent trees - the "webbed" design is a big improvement over DA:O. I love the upgrade options to already taken talents (now I can finally specialize my character instead of ending up with 50 spells of which I only use 20, like in DA:O :-))
  • graphics - with dx11, the game looks very, very good; I'm specially pleased that Bioware relesead hi-res textures this time.
Dislike:
  • isometric view (lack of it) - this is a MAJOR disappointment for me. With mouse driven interface that PC has, targeting (specially aoe abilities) is increadibly awkward - aoe spells that are "snapping" to enemies; targeting an enemy that is just behind 2 other enemies and 2 of my party members - this was all present in DA:O but it was a non-issue because of the isometric camera.
  • combat (the teleport effect) - while the combat "waves" is not inherently a bad design, the enemies popping out of thin air is just plain nonsense
Indifferent:
  • party members (equipment) - in one way I miss the ability min-max equipment of party members, then I realize how I like not having to play dressup (flame on :-))
  • voiced protagonist - while it is nice to not play a mute, customizing the face of your Hawke results in a voice that absolutely doesn't fit him/her.
  • no "lock the spellbar" - loved this feature in DA:O because I often drag an icon I intended to click
  • combat animations - more variety is an improvment, yes. but, come on, you went a bit overboard with it - at least with mage animations.
Off-topic:
  • the dog - I fully intended to name it Morrigan and before I was given a chance other characters addressed it as a "he", meh.

game froze up again at random while talking to the sword searching dwarf in the deep roads... then once more during a fight while helping Merril... great game minus all the freezing. A friend of mine is also running into freezing. Few reviews out there talking about it too.

Where to even begin?

Now, to start off, DA2 is a decent game. But that's just it – barely decent. Nothing more. So let me comment on the good and bad things. I'll try to keep this short, so I'm brining up the most importnat stuff only.

Another note - atmosphere is utterly important for me.

BAD:

- Animations for the player are way faster than for the enemies. If the enemies attacked as fast then the player would be dead before he could react. But since they are so slow, the only way to offer a challenge is to have enemies with mountains of HP's or throw hordes of lesser ones at the player. A completely flawed approach. It's a party based game, so slow combat served a purpose - give the player time to react to what's going on the battlefield, while keeping enemies dangerous. Fast-pace and party combat don’t mix well.

- the whole enemy leveling and difficulty system. It just feel lifeless and artificial. AND THE DAMN ENEMY
WAVES. Worst thing added. EVER. It's just utterly boring and ridiculous. Hawke killed more enemies in just the first chapter than the Warden did in whole of DA:O. It just feels like padding that doubles the length of fights.

- oversized weapons.
They look horrible. Some weapons cannot even be held by characters, since the handle is thicker than their arms! And the design of some is downright silly.

- Multiple lore defilments.
EXAMPLE: We know from DA:O that when a mage enters the fade physicly, death in the fade is fatal. Then the Keeper tells us that killing in the fade makes one effectively tranquil. And yet if you kill a companion in the fade, they are perfectly fine after that.

- low weapon/item selection early in the game. I had to play the entire first part with a maul (and I hate mauls) because there wasn't a better weapon available. Weapon scaling doesn't work well.

- Inventory icons suck. I'm sorry, but that's the truth. They are all the same! Humans are visual creatures. It's faster to ID something by the icon than to read the items name. There's a reason why people loved the icon mod for DA:O

- no equipping party members. I understand limiting the equipment to what would realyl be usefull (like only medium/heavy armor on your warrior), but removing it completely????

- the skill tree is a hit-and-miss. Half of the upgrades shouldn't even be upgrades, but should come standard.
EXAMPLE: Why does one have to upgrade Mighty Blow to give extra damage to brittle enemies? It's a full-force swing with a giant metal object - exactly how do you "upgrade" that? Exactly why doesn't it do extra damage to brittle things to beign with?

- the whole attribute and item restriction system. Constantly dumping attribute points for insignificant gains is boring. And escalating attribute requirements for items suck. I yearn to make a strong character to start with…but that is impossible in this game.

- the game makes it hard to play a templar-supporter, as it pits you constantly against them. I'm not talking about side-quests either. The main quest forces you to kill templars (Anders quest), and with the game making demons and abominations into wusses (and thus not a credible threat), and templars into incompetents (given that you can have a party full of mages blasting away in front of templars and they can't figure you out) - it's no wonder people don't like em!

- repeats and re-uses of entire areas. Generally bland and lifeless outside areas.

- conversation wheel. It's badly implemented. The intention icons are good, but the short snippets still give the wrong impression..an you still have only 3 responses. Always only the same 3 responses! That is unacceptable. Here's an example of how you might do it right:
Posted Image

Posted Image

-Removal of synergies between same classes (like mage-mage). Oh, I have nothing against inter-class combos, but why can’t two fighters have a combo too?

GOOD:

- companions having homes and the life of their own.

- passage of time. Too bad Kirkwall changes too little visually over the years.

- having a family is cool

- some witty banter.

LONG STORY SHORT:

Interesting setting, interesting premise, good writing - gameplay and delivery are mediocre.

Just finished it here at around 7:30 am.

I've been playing RPGs for twenty-odd years and I've NEVER played one with a story that delivered like DA:II's (Maybe some of the Ultimas.) The last few hours have seen me fist pumping and cheering to an empty room, crying and having to stop and take a quick break because things were just too tense.

DA:II was far from perfect. Repetitive dungeons (but at least no endless Dwarven caves) bugs out the whazoo - but what it did with story and narrative was wonderful. I haven't seen a game take these kinds of narrative risks since TORMENT. Really an amazing piece of work, Bioware.

For the sort of specific things that aren't spoilery?

Great smooth graphics, excellent voice acting, great writing - and I'm a longtime RPG fan and I love the sped-up combat. Fast-paced, highly tactical, but still fun and not the - he swings, he swings back - sort of affair from the first one. The best fights made me feel like I was in the middle of my tabletop Pathfinder game. Combat became an impediment to the story and the fun parts of Origins (I confess I cranked Combat down to easy to finish Awakenings) but not so here. I enjoyed the endless waves of enemies in some spots - where with Origins I'd have been throwing the keyboard, cranking down the difficulty just to hurry it up, or logging off to re-play Morrowind.

I loved Kirkwall, it did feel like there needed to be more people in the streets, and if anything I'd have liked to see the passage of time played up. I know there's a lot of hate for it being set in one city, but again it felt like the best kind of sandbox tabletop RPG, where you get to know and love a locale and watch it grow and change around you.

I loved the characters - well I enjoyed learning about them, I didn't necessarily LIKE all of them - some of them were tools. But they felt - to me - way more "real" than the DA:O crew save maybe Alaistar. They felt, instead of being a band of people thrown together to fight the McGuffin of the year, like a group of friends and family. And I loved how the Rivalry system set up really interesting dynamics between everyone.

I could go on, but someone will probably accuse me of being a EA shill. (I'm not, really, and why - especially given how deeply tied in it was - was The Exiled Prince DLC? Was it to push pre-orders? I know that brick-and-motar stores are more and more militant about early pre-orders.)

Thanks for raising the bar on RPG storytelling.

Oh aang1 Posted Imagemy game froze a lot at the start but my husband made some adjustments, set it to play using directx 9 I think and a few other changes and now it runs like a dream! Maybe you could try that?

I have been playing the game for the past two days, I have been very immersed and enjoying some aspects and not enjoying others, so here are some of my opinions!

Likes

I am loving the gameplay, from the mage prospective, its so visually exciting watching my spells make such an impact, the templars are right to be VERY AFRAID! (hehehe!!)

I am loving having the mirror of transformation, I have already changed my look about ten times! Every time I buy a new dress, I can update my look! Ohh swoonPosted Image, thanks so much Bioware!

I am loving some of the characters voices, especially mine and Merrils, oh her accent is so lovely and her acting is lovely too! I really think the characters all have great and believable acting skills and thats wonderful! Is Anders a different actor, he sounds so different!

I love that there are very many, many missions to do! It makes me feel very busy at all times!

Dislikes

I am missing so much being able to chat to companions any time or any place, being a very gregarious woman in real life, I naturally loved being able to stop in Origins and chat with any character at any time, over and over.

I feel as if I am still not immersed in my character and in the other characters lives as much as I would want. I am sad that the people in the world, npcs generally do and say nothing when I click on them :(

I am having a lot of trouble getting my companions to like me Posted Image I find the new options for making decisions is hard to understand at times and I keep getting negative responses from various party members, none of the male love interests even like my mage very much. With Alistair the romance flowed so slowly but naturally and well and he was so loyal, it was hard to make him cross. (Just like my hubbyPosted Image) For me the epic and amazing development of friendships  and relationships in Origins was a masterpiece and I played that game about 20 times as a result. I was really hoping for more of the same in DA2.

I miss the inventory system from origins and being able to dress my companions up in matching outfits and the best swords etc. I loved being able to put morrigan in grotty clothes when she was nasty to Alistair! (Meeeow!!)

I find the story is a bit blah.. what am I supposed to be doing? I feel a bit like an odd job girl at the moment, hoping things get a bit more exciting and climatic as I go along!

There are many thinks like crafting and chatting to people in their homes I am unsure about yet. I still have much of the game to play and want to give it time to see how I feel by the end.

But over all I am enjoying this game. I am not in LOVE it as I am with Origins but its been lovely to be back in the world of Thedas.

After 32 hours of gameplay I "finally" completed it. When I say finally, I really mean it. Because DA2 is a huge let down. It was a pain to play the game. I was so close to stop playing it many times, but I was dumb enough to think it might be better further in. It never got better, just worse.

Im a big fan of Bioware games, such as ME1, ME2 & DA;O. But DA2 just worthless.
It should been called "Errand boy/Errand girl" becuase that was the feeling I got when played it.
I had hard time knowing what I was doing, and why. There is no depths in the quests. I have spent 32 hours just runnig back and forth doing quests that did had no impact on me. I did not know why, or really cared. I did not feel conected. In DA:O it was so different. I was more concerned about the quests and I really feelt like I was doing something good (or bad) but not in DA2. However some of the companions quests was really fun. And some of the companions had some fun personalites, and the chat between them was sometimes hilarious funny. But I had hard time to "feel" anything for them. To me they were just mindless zombies. The only one I cared for was Merril. She was "retarded cute" so to speak.

The combat was okay, rogues and mages was a great upgrade, but the sound from the staff sounded more like something from Star Wars. Faster combat was really okay, But it may had been an little to fast paced. Much much much less tactics as well. To much hack n' slash thingy. After a while I stop care about tactics, becuase it made no sense any more. I just used a few and sticked to it. In DA:O there was much much more tactics behind the fights. Much much more thinking and planning. Not this time. Just run in, slaughter anything that moves and then move on. No thinking or planning what so ever.

I can't even continue to write more of my review. This game should had never been relased. Not as it is now.
Im really disappointed. I will never play DA2 again.
If ME3 turns out to be big disappointed such as DA2, I will stop support Bioware for good. Unless you get rid of the idiots at EA. Do what you do best Bioware. Create games that leaves an unforgettable experience in our hearts.

Dragon Age 2. Well one thing for sure is that it is NOT Origins B). There are several great points to the game ... unfortunately there are many more things (to my humble opinion) hold it down.

First the Good Stuff  :

Dragon Age 2 has (as always, my humble opinion), the best combat engine I have seen in an RPG in recent memory. The fps (frames) are truly amazing, regardless if you play the game on PC or consul, this is simply a great thing!

I have been in LOVE with the new art style since day one. As much as I loved the look of the monsters from the Blight, Its nice to see some original idea work with the revamping of the Genlock, Emissary, hell even the Quinarri. The art is definitely one thing which I think will set DA 2 apart from other RPGs, as well as usher in the Dark Fantasy concepts that are so common in the Dragon Age stories.

The new crafting system (or lack there of, take your pick), is a great thing. Not having to load my pack down with herbs and roots and Maker knows what else (lol), lets me focus more on taking useful items ... i.e. additional potions, rune and weapon collecting. Its simply just a headache that (for me) was relieved.

The Mass Effect style conversation wheel was a GREAT addition. I do LOVE Mass Effect, and to be honest (my love for that title aside), the conversation wheel does work WONDERS better then the line by line dialogue option.

Now, On to the BAD <_
I appreciate a good story, as well as some enduring concepts, BioWare has always been a fan of damned if you do, damned if you dont situations in there rpgs. Still, when I cant keep party members because of a play threw, especially if a character, In GOOD standing, MAX friendship leaves because of one decision I make, and takes ALL the gear that I outfitted him/her with ... thats just bad. There is no excuse for that. :pinched:

Probably the thing about the game that agitates me the most, if the cameos of old characters that pop up, say hi then depart as if they were meant to be there. As if its a reward just to see there face one more time. Seriously. Once even shows up in the last battle (assuming you did the quest and they lived threw Origins), and doesn't say a word! There just there, swinging there weapon, and when the fight is over .... there gone. No word, no explanation just "Oh I was passing threw". Nothing. :?

The completion of the game rose my blood pressure to I think dangerous levels, Im not sure. I understand the whole concept of a Frame Narrative (which was a joke by the way, at best its a quick explanation of what happens during the years that the game fast forwards threw with out so much as a side quest. Playing a whole decade of the Kirkwall adventure was my understanding, not two side quests, a main and then "Story time with Varrick"), but there is no Epilogue AT ALL!!! Seriously? At least in Origins and even Awakening we got to read about what our companions did after the thing was over, all we get from this is "We ran for the hills, then separated" all but the love interest who stays ... depending on the interest. An end battle which takes near an hour and an ending that lasts 120 seconds .... at best. :crying:

I feel let down. I hate that. Ive been a big Dragon Age fan since the beginning. Got the books, beaten Origins, Awakenings and all the DLC seven ways from Sunday. I was MORE then anticipating this game! I kinda wish BioWare would have held onto it another year and put more effort into the story or something. It just left me feeling the same way the end of Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver 2 left me feeling .... annoyed.

Im not saying Im jumping ship, Im not saying down with Dragon Age! God knows that would be a lie, my friends and I even play the table top version lol. All Im saying is I was more disappointed then I thought possible, coming from my favorite developer and my favorite game series ... it just struck a nerve.

Not being able to talk with my companions when ever I wanted to was a MAJOR issue. I think one of the best things, if not the main thing that first attracted me to Origins (Other then it being a BioWare RPG and spiritual successor to Baulders Gate lol) was character interaction. I could talk with my companions when ever I wanted. I go to camp and just BS with them, or take my love interest to bed just because I felt like it. There were options. Now I have to go to there house? And, HOPE that I have done something or picked up an item that would allow for a few seconds of dialogue. Also the Mass Effect approach of making a statement here or there and building up to a single romantic scene (which are weak in DA2 by the way. I figured Mass Effect 2 was watered down romance scenes enough ... but no, Dragon Age 2 waters it down to a family friendly concept ... that aside), You get no additional scenes. Just the one, which you have to work at .... depending on your love interest. I LOVE Mass Effect dont get me wrong, but when I heard people say "Dragon Effect" I laughed, I didnt realize who close this game had come to being a dark age version of just that! Until, I actually played it. I didnt care about ANY of my companions. I didnt know them ... aside for Anders, there was just no story growth, just baldn. And, as far as the Mass style relationship treatment and the Mass style items given to me by my companions and all the other Mass Effect inspired game elements placed into a a game that I bought and craved and expected to be Dragon Age .... all I can realy say is that if I want to play Mass Effect, Ill play Mass Effect, when I want to p[lay Dragon Age, I expect it to be Dragon Age .  <_<

I agreed with a post I read forever ago, written by David Gaider (at least Im 99% sure it was him ^_^) were he said it made him angry people downing a game before it even came out and we had a chance to play it. I agree with that. Well, I have played it, and given my opinion on the good and the bad, I can still see myself playing threw Origins, but maybe two more play threws for DA2 to get the achievements and I think that will be it, unless and expansion fixes some of the things I spoke of .

Of course Ill be buying any expansions and/or DLC for the game. Its is Dragon Age after all, and for better or worse, its still my favorite game series. I just wish Dragon Age 2 had been more deserving of the series name.

My review :

Combat : 10

Crafting and Gathering : 8

Art and Graphics :10

Story :4

Character Interaction :2

Overall : Id recommend Dragon Age Origins to a friend before I would Dragon Age 2 :crying::crying::crying::crying:.

All I can do is hope that somebody realy is reading these posts and that some of this stuff is taken into consideration. God knows I cant be the only one.

First Impressions

Background

Before I begin, a little background. I play games on the PC. I've played Bioware games ever since I tripped over a nifty game called Balder's Gate. I greatly enjoyed Origins. I'm not a role player in the traditional sense, but I enjoy playing games with a mix of RP and combat.

In Origins, I didn't like to micromanage my companions. I spent the vast majority of the time controlling the main character, and allowed the AI (Tactics) to control the others characters. I only took control of other characters in special situations.

I've played DA2 for 4+ hours and have completed several quests. My main character is a level 5-6 mage. Now, on to the first impressions...

Combat

I read the rules while installing the game. The one thing that really stood out: friendly fire on Nightmare difficultly only (!). That was disappointing; when I played a mage in Origins, one of the challenges was positioning my character so that friendly fire was minimized.

Once I started playing DA2, I realized why friendly fire was turned off for all but Nightmare. Monsters spawn out of thin air from all directions, so there is no "front line". Rather, the party is surrounded, and therefore the significance and usefulness of area spells is reduced if friendly fire is enabled. Much easier to drop that Fireball inside the middle of your group if you don't need to worry about friendly fire. But does easier mean more fun? No.

On Hard difficulty, combat is not difficult. My party wiped once at Kirkwall before gaining entrance, mainly because I wasn't expecting to find hordes of baddies teleporting out of thin air. Various party members have dropped during combat, mainly due to a lack of healing potions. But, overall the combat has not been difficult.

Combat mostly consists of running up to a group of baddies and clicking ice storm or mind blast. Sometimes I drop a heal on a party member. Aside from that, I spend most of my time off to the side, right clicking on enemies until they're dead. Sometimes I see Carver move around at warp speed, which always confuses me. There don't seem to be any tactical decisions to make, other than perhaps "kill the mage!".

Quests
I need to complete more quests before I finalize my impression of how quests were done in DA2, but so far the quests feel short, narrow, and constrained. I don't expect an open world from DA2, but then again, if I see a door in a dungeon I expect to be able to open it. So many times I've run up to doors only to bounce off, feeling like Wiley E. Coyote.

Miscellaneous

The dialogue wheel: one of the things that made Origins great were the cinematic cut scenes. Vocalizing all conversation was an interesting idea, but I don't mind text replies and so for me, a lot of effort went into a feature which didn't improve the game experience. Plus - I miss seeing all the witty text replies which I wouldn't necessarily have chosen.

Equipping Companions: I'm not sure how I feel about not being able to equip companions. It may turn out to be a relief.

"Junk" inventory: thank you, thank you so much. I suspect I will need to buy a backpack at some point; I just hope they don't cost 327 sovereigns apiece (which is what I dreamed last night).

Synopsis

outstanding negatives
(-) no friendly fire (except on Nightmare)
(-) combat obviously designed for the console
(-) enemies teleporting out of thin air, from areas you've already cleared
(-) few tactical decisions to make; just mash the buttons.

outstanding positives

(+) very stable game; so far no crashes or obvious bugs.

I went into the game believing the people online that the game was a horrible shell of Origins.  I came out impressed overall, but still had some gripes.

I have no idea what people were saying about the graphics being bad, they look a lot better than Origins to me (I was playing my roomates copy on his Phenom II x4 HD 6850 system).

The storyline people said had no main plot to move you forward, which is just a lie.  The problem is the plot is subtle and you have to think a bit to get it, but thinking that much might be beyond the detractors abilities.

I will say, I wish there was more varried localles, I skipped so many secondary quests because I was sick to death of seeing the same locations, just with areas blocked off and such.  I mean, it makes sense given how rushed EA made this, it just took away the true sense of exploration I get from other RPGs (which is what I truly want from a game).

I also wish I could do something to change my companion armors (though they changed during the plot I have no idea why it randomly changed, I wish there was more control over that aspect).

Speaking of the plot, I liked the way it was structured and the jumping forward mechanic was very nice as it allowed character to have a sense of progression.

Alas, my biggest gripe for the game... WHY CAN'T I TALK TO PEOPLE OUTSIDE THEIR "HOME AREA"  AND ONLY WHEN THEY HAVE A QUEST?  In DA:O I could talk to people, get to know them and everything anytime I wanted... now it's only very select conversations which is complete BS... If there is one thing I am pissed at Bioware for it was removing those chances for me to get to know my comrades better.  Also, post-game... at least in ME2 you could call your relationship interest at sit with them, and still walk around the ship and talk to people... here after the game there is NOTHING until DLC comes out (or mod support... please get it out there Bioware).  Even just having my companions in my estate would be better so I could talk to them.

Overall though I give the game a solid 87 (with 50 being an average/decent game, 0 being Superman 64, 100 being Mass Effect 2)  DA:O would have been a 92 on this scale.

First impressions from a couple of hours of play:

-- Story: The initial story and fights don't seem to be grabbing me on an emotional level like the prolog of DA:Os did. For some reason I feel no connection at all to the main character and the plight of the companions. It is difficult to explain why without giving away spoilers.

-- Gameplay: As a warrior the system seems reasonably OK so far. One thing I don't care for so far is that enemies seem to be spawning behind me even though I've been trying to make efforts to protect the people in the back of the party. This is disappointing tactically. In terms of focusing on the action of just one character the moves / animations are a little too over the top for my liking. It's almost like playing an Arcade Fantasy game instead of a Fantasy RPG. The action does seem to be more engaging this time though.

Graphics: No complaints so far [XBox 360].

Interaction: It seems like my party members and people that I meet have disappointingly little amounts to say. I'd like to be able to talk to companions on the road and have a conversation with them instead of just one liners. I would have liked to have seen a little more party banter to liven up the environment. Nothing so far.

Graphics Style & Design: I like some of the initial city areas & effects. I don't care for the redesigns I've seen so far for Darkspawn. I esp. don't like the Gaunt look and prefer the beefier look of DA:O.

Character customization / skillups / etc. This seems like a strength of the game. The webbed approach with updates to existing powers seems to allow for good custimization.

Grade so far. If a 0 is a total bug fest that is literally unplayable and a 100 is DA:O then I'd rate this game a 69. Most of the reason for this is that [for what I hoped to be an RPG] I don't feel involved with the story on an emotional level. Therefore the C- to D+ grade so far.

Devil's advocate: I suspect my score can only go up.

Idd the companion chat was a let down for me aswell. Only chatting when they have a new quest or after finding some item for them was kinda meh.

Also copy paste terrain was kinda meh. Feels like they didnt hace enough time to make more terrain or smthing.

The combat was a nice change for me but the enemies jumping out of nowhere as reinforcements was kinda meh.

Overall tho I enjoyed it, but it coulve been nicer. :/

I would give 7/10

Well I always say if it’s not broken do not fix it, that’s my
opinion of Dragon Age: Origins and that’s why a lot of people are so unhappy
or upset with the new Dragon Age: 2 style..

General Likes:

Import previous saved game option.

The graphics updates seem better (my Opinion)

General Dislikes:

The faster action/combat (not sure what they were thinking
on this it seems very silly)

Mages staffs (seems to me again silly I felt like my mage
had an AK 47 with the speed she was using her staff to fire flame at enemies)

Darkspawn they seem very poorly done in my opinion

Dialog/voice acting/storyline. all of them very poorly done compared
to Dragon Age:  Origins

Enemies bodies exploding into mush. (Completely over the top
and not needed in this game feels like playing a ps3 > God of war 3)

All in all I feel Dragon Age: Origins was far better by
miles. I felt connected to my companions when using Dialog and whatever action
you take by talking to them has consequences and it has a flawless storyline all
just my opinion of course.

I
Feel Very let down by Dragon Age: 2 the style of the combat/action and game
play was awful the Dialog/voice acting/story was poor.  At points I felt like I was playing God of
war 3 all that was missing out of this game was Kratos .

The
only thing that I thought was good was the Graphics which I did not mind..

I buy a LOT of games, I even buy games that I suspect I'll only marginally enjoy. Loved DAO, bought every bit of DLC I could get my hands on. I assumed DA2 would be much like DA:O but better. Oh how terribly wrong I was. If I'd realised what trash DA2 was going to be I wouldn't have bought it. Money completely wasted. Why oh why is it so incredibly dumbed down? Please Bioware, give your customers some credit. Surely the majority of feedback about DAO wasn't that it was too complicated? DA2 is so over-simplified its just ridiculous.

Very, very disappointed. Expected so much more from a Bioware game. In the past two or three years I've been disappointed by more new games than I've been impressed by. It seems to be the way the industry is going, dumbing down games to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and therefore gain sales from the broadest possible base.

I'm 7 hours into DA2 and I'm seriously considering uninstalling it.

xbox 360 player

Im, really surprised about all the negativity people are feeling for the game. I admit I was a little concerned about the the game being over simplified after playing the Demo, but after playing the game for 6 + hours im loving it.
the combat is much more fun and once you get used to the speed it makes Origins combat look like an asthmatic tortoise  ( and im a huge Orignis fan ).
The graphics are so much improved over origins too, obviously cant comment on PC, but xbox is much improved.

The story is so far has been engaging and am loving the characters except Anders ( who bizarly i enjoyed in Awakening, thought he was great fun ).

ok not so good

I dont like that i cant quickly flick between primary and secondary weapons like you could in Origins, and i do miss being able to kit out your party's armour and robes, but for me these have been a minor blemish on an overall fantastic game, and i cant wait to be able to get back on my xbox to play again.

lastly since iv not seen anyone else mention it id like to comment on  the soundtrack which is excelent and sets the mood for the game perfectly . bringing back a few themes from Origins but with a new feel that seems to set the scene that you are no longer in Fereldan.

Dragon Age 2 is best suited for the consol not the PC. It should have stayed specifically for the consol. For the PC it's like going from cavier to pig slop.

Pros:
  • Fast intuitive combat style, though I do have to agree that the endless waves of mobs get darned annoying.  In fact there are so many of them that I'm thankful that most of them just despawn and I don't have to loot them...not that I could put the loot on most of my characters anyway.
  • Party members that don't seem to wander off and get stuck in absurd places doing nothing at all.
  • A wider range of quests early on in the game (in my opinion) so that I don't feel as if I'm having my hand held until I'm an adult.
Cons:
  • Character development seems a bit lacking, but I'm in the earlier stages of the game and am starting to see improvement.
  • The inability to actually "chat" with my party members is very disappointing.  It made the party members friends or foes in ways that DA 2 just doesn't seem to do.  I enjoyed taking a bit of time now and then to sit around the campfire and either make friends or stir up some trouble depending upon my mood.
  • The background chatter of the party members...I know that many hated it, but I thought it was hilarious and would sometimes stop what I was doing just to listen to them talk to each other.
  • There is little that I really HATE about the game, but if I were to pick one thing, it would be our inability to gear our party members the way we want to.  The new system really is rather horrible.
  • Ok...one more, as Danjaru just pointed out....I want my darned crafting back...and some of my other skills too.  I also don't need a huge announcement when I've found yet another herb, I KNOW what the herb does....too bad I can't just use it myself.

In short, it just feels that a lot of the personality was removed from the game.  Perhaps it was done for those who prefer more action oriented games, but that's not all of us.  If I'm going to sit at the computer playing until my eyes are red and blurry and half the words in this post are spelled wrong, I would like to see more depth and interaction with my party members.  I was actually heartbroken (yes I do have a real life and do normal womanly things) when I started Awakening and my friends were gone.  The character interaction was that important to me.

Only played the game for about two-three hours, so I can't make an educated review yet, but my impression so far:

+ Story seems to be good
+ Good-looking magic attacks

- Horrible, HORRIBLE-looking combat (seriously, I was preparing myself at being annoyed by it, but it just looks really stupid compared to DA:O)
-No auto-attack on console (also REALLY annoying, seeing as every moment of combat is pent mashing the A button instead of thinking tactics)

I'm looking forward to keep playing, and hope it will grow on me.

Well..

The game is a huge dissapointment and if I knew it was going to be this bad I wouldn't have bought it. It's honestly the worst Bioware game I've ever played.

But I guess I have to be a bit more specific why.

Disslikes:

Battles overall.

Waves are stupid and takes away much of the strategy (played nightmare on both DA2 and Origins). In Origins you see enemies, you put a strategy down accordingly, positioning, crowd controlling, and so forth. Waves in DA2 takes alot away from this, you tactically take down one group just to have another Teleport in, yes, teleport.

Mages have been immensely gimped and the spells aren't as useful, the larger cones with cone abilities makes your mages have to be up close, but then if they get attacked they can't do anything, just keep stumbling backwards.

Healing with 40 second cooldown is just stupid and makes you have to consume loads of pots. Even with Anders focusing mostly on healing spells, it ends up lacking, even with two healers pots have to be consumed (especially against the Rock Wraith). Maybe I'm just a bad player but it feels like Healing was gimped waaaay too much.

Warrior Aoe's are a joke as you can end up 1-2 shotting your tank, so I had to activate my Hawke's Aoe, then switch to tank, run away while Hawke did his Aoe's then run back which felt dumb.

The "snap to target" Aoe is making it impossible to have a ranged character far away and then placing Aoe Spells in front of the tank to just hit opponents.

And the animations of how they fight feels like a Hack-n-Slash.

But the main reason is:

Battles feel pointless and are designed very, very poorly. Around every turn there's dozens of enemies. At night you could go around slaughtering up to a hundred bandits, several groups around every corner. At one place I fought a Golem, two revenants, an arcane horror, A Rage abomination and a dozen skeletons... Why? I don't know! there wasn't a quest, just random.

You go around killing abominations, demons and dragons as if it's a everyday thing. No enemy has any significanse.

Story:

Or the lack of Story. I'm halfway through Act 2 and I'm still wondering "what's the story?" and "Why should I care?"

I have no attachment to any of my characters and wouldn't blink twice if they all ended up dying. The only characters I kinda like are Merill and Anders (Anders mostly due to Awakening, this version is very dull in comparison). All the characters are dull, and if they're not crying over a tragic past, they're just there being scenery with abilities. And it doesn't make it better that they decided to use the Awakenings system of "you can only talk to them when they want to" which is not often so far.

The game feels like "Dragon Age: The Sidequests" and there's no real drive or focus to the story at all.

Halfway throught Act 2 I just stopped caring, went from Nightmare to Casual just to get through some quests, and now I don't even want to start up the game again.

An extra mention to the dullness of characters, there is not one interesting character in the entire game, everyone is downplayed (except probably Sandal, he's managed to still be awesome). Even when they're being witty it feels like they're Trying instead of Being. And Party Banter is also very dull, it feels like a debate every time instead of just something funny happening from time to time.

Crafting:

THERE IS NONE!

this poor excuse of crafting in DA2 just sucks.

This whole Bioware "be what WE want you to be":

Mages can't be close combatants with magic anymore, Rogues are strictly dps and some CC, warriors can't dual wield and are either brutes with a big stick or a masochist.

Then not being able to costumize your party the way you want just cause "it doesn't fit their vision" is just a insult, I didn't like it in Mass Effect and I hate it even more here.

Likes:

Warriors being able to burst into the enemy, a good improvement over Origins where Warriors slowly approached enemies, got into position and then started beating on them.

I like the idea of the ability trees, being able to make your favorite spell even more deadly.

Overall:

Probably a 3/10 or something.

I played through Origins on nightmare 4, each time being just as engaged as the last. DA2 is just plain awful in comparion. And honestly DA2 feels like a long line of Sidequest missions that resemble that of a MMORPG. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Ouch...the lack of auto attack on console REALLY has to be terrible.  Thankfully thats not a problem on the pc, I wonder if the combat looks different as well or if I'm just too focused on the characters.  I'll have to check out a friends copy and compare.

Sorry...shutting up and turning off the computer before my keyboard drowns in drool.

(I'm a PC gamer)
I've been a big fan for long time and this must be the first time that i got into a bioware game and went 'meh not worth it, will play something else for now'.

If not for the annoying anti piracy code and 1 time use for the downloading of exrtas I would be getting my money back. Seems unfair that the only thing stopping me getting money back is a built in system that essentially prevents it from being possible.

Seems like a spit in the face for real PC RPG fans that have bought games. The games in the past that have actually allowed the company to get to the point of selling out to the console 'RPGers'.

It just seems poor that high textures were not shipped with the DVD, that upon entering and attempting to link to the servers it tried to access a non existant A drive that no other game has ever had issues with. Also when starting suffered crashes in the very first cut scene.

Changing graphics to what feel inferior and the change to the very starting hurlocs just doesn't make any sense considering they were meant to be the same ones from DA:O.

From a team based RPG it just seems to have become an action game that has taken a step backwards. Even the health bars above the enemies seem to be something taken from a simple hack and slash game all the way from the sega era.

Not impressed at all and very upset about how the compnay has decided to go. Feeling incredibly anxious now about the new ME and scared what else will be stripped from it to dumb it down.

And having already mentioned the A drive thing if that managed to pass testing undetected. It makes me very worried about the new SWTOR game better start some betas because the in house testing can't be up to scratch, if things like that can get through.

Just had to say something because this has made me really angry been looking forward to this game since I was playing DA:O and I played that a lot and this sad excuse for a follow up is just upsetting.

I think from a PC perspective they should have remembered "if its not broken don't fix it".

Can't comment on the game features as a whole becuase not even got through it which speaks volumes considering couldn't stop playing other bioware games.

Only reason to post now is the slim hope that Bioware reads this and it influences DA3:

Serious Dislikes (Borderline game ruining):

-- "Pigeon Holed" NPCs and PC. - Want to play a warrior who dual wields? Sorry you cant. Mage carrying a sword? Sorry no. Rogue with handaxes? Not going to happen. All Bioware needed to do was let  characters carry any old weapon, and let that character use thier  abilities with those weapons instead of the preselected types.

-- Equipment needs 2 stats, and its different for each type. Each type of armor and weapon has 2 pre-requisite attributes in order to be useable by a PC or NPC. Each of these is a pair corresponding with a particular class. All it does is force each class into its pre-determined 'role' (see above).  Being a  bloodmage is a major pain in the ass when cranking up your constitution limits what armor you can wear. My Mage has a 22 Cunning and 22 Dex just so he can wear armor instead of those stupid looking mage robes.

Annoyances:

-- Dialog Wheel/Voiced PC - While having a voiced PC is nice. It gets REALLY tiring when the short summary you select does not match what the PC says. Unexpectedly angering an NPC or taking the conversation somewhere  I didn't want to go.

-- Lack of Topdown camera. I can live without a topdown camera, but playing on the harder difficulities isn't any fun when you can't target an enemy because a wall is in your way. I ended up playing much of DA2 on "Normal" (which is FAR too easy) not because Hard was too difficult, but because manging a party from a cramped persepctive sucks.

-- Resuse of areas. A little reuse is to be expected. Especially for side quests. But this is way overkill. There is only 1 mine, 1 dark roads, 1 dungeon, 1 coast, 1 cave in the entire game. Exploring new areas is the FUN part of an RPG. I want to walk into an area and think "Wow, that looks cool!". By Act 2 I knew where every battle would take place because there are only so many open areas suitable for combat.

-- Enemies spawning in waves. Waves of enemies is fun for a while, and an interesting dynamic for some combats. But for every single one? It just got old, fast. Whats wrong with 1-10 really tough guys instead of 20 crappy weaklings.

-- Weapon scale. Why is every weapon carried by characters in this game about 2x larger than a real weapon would be? Carver and Fenris are carrying bladed telephone poles. half the mage staffs clip into the ground when carried on the back. DA:O had this problem too. I expected this to be fixed, I guess not.

-- Ugly Mage robes. DA:O had this problem too. A few of them look good. But the vast majority of them look like monotone rain ponchos. Wouldn't an adverturing mage have pouches? Baubles hanging from a bandoleer? Maybe even pants?

Likes:
The Framed Narrative/Overall story. The narrative of a character's life over 10 years is fun and intersting. Its refreshing for an RPG to not be the story of overthrowing an ancient evil.

Companions. Not everyone likes the same companions. But they are still fun, entertaining, and well done.

The new Ability trees. Its nice to be able to pick and choose which powers you want by following a branching tree over the DAO system. Upgrading spells I use often was realy nice too.

Cross class Combos. They are fun and more interesting than the Spell combos of DA:O. Really useful in the harder difficulties.

DA2 is still a good game. But its not something I would play through more than once. Will I be buying the next DA game? Maybe, depends on if Bioware acknowledges these problems and fixes them. Will I be buying DA2 DLC? Not ever.

I really don't like how each companion has their own outfit and cannot be equipped with different armor. Same thing they did with the ME2 squaddies.

Srsly...i found this game pretty fun. Graphics are good (for me), the storyline is awesome and there is alot of new secondary/side/companions quests. DA2 is better in the *equipement* zone because in DA:O if u wanted a mage armor u needed to go to the Circle...but now whatever class u are , all the armors are for your class....this is pretty nice.

I'll be short. I played most western RPGs in the past 15 years, and liked Bioware games especially. I completed PC version of DA2 and had a look at the console one.

- The overall story and direction are great, though the pacing is somewhat off, as if it was watered down with fillers.
- Totally loved voiced protagonist. I sure hope it stays that way for future series.
- Dialog wheel is implemented almost perfectly. Much better than in ME series.
- Companions aren't that memorable as Origins ones, but thats not a big deal. It's just that Origins was too great at that (hell, companions was the only part that was totally 10/10 in orings)
- Combat system is still deep and tactical, though requires Hard or Nightmare difficulty (which isn't told explicitly). Feels great too.
- Graphics are somewhat hit and miss. On the technical level it's okay, but sometime art design fails - new darkspawn design is just /facepalm.
I'd also like to that new animations are great, especially mage ones.
- Character progression is way superior and deeper compared to DAO. Almost all of the abilities have their uses in certain situations.
- Repetitive dungeons are bad, that was told too may times. ME1 had the same fault, and Bioware done it again here. Worst thing about DA2 :(

Overall i think DA2 could have been a masterpiece, but clearly was rushed and almost all aspects have minor issues. Bioware should have polished it a bit more.\\
Still it's a great game: 9/10
