ho hum. seems that the haters are really frothing at the mouth on this one. Y'all take this thing much too seriously, methinks. And besides: try judging the game by its own merits, not by all that came before it.

But who am i to talk? The voice of reason seems to have left these fora. Probably got tired of all the inane ranting going on.

the name of the game is Dragon Age 2.........

....

Ill let that sink in a minute.

Ok since it is the SEQUEL to Dragon Age: Origins, I think I will continue to compare Dragon Age 2 to its predecessor, thank you very much.

Just based on the majority of the comments in this thread I think I will stay away from this game.

Bioware, now that you have this new direction out of your system can you please go back to making good old fashioned RPG's? Thanks.

PC player here. So I'll get that out of the way right now. Also, I've only played about 4 hours, so bear in mind that too.

Stuff that I like: After two attempts and about an hour and a half worth of work, I finally got a LadyHawke I liked. Though it took a while, I really like her. I'm on Windows XP, so the graphics aren't anything to sing about, but they are well done and there is more detail in this game. It feels more like a working city, more so than Denerim. I really like Hawke's dialogue system w/ the wheel and the ability to flesh out a character through choices on said wheel. If Hawke is a jerk, then the "free dialogue" between Hawke and certain characters express that. So far that's my favorite aspect of the game. The dialogue scenes are much more cinematic, a good plus. The gameplay is fast and fun and that's all I'll say about it at this point. So far I like the characters, but nothing to write hone about just yet. The way the game is told is great and I've heard a few mentions of the previous game already.

Stuff that was okay: The new buttons and codex and all that jazz are okay, no better or worse than in DA:O, just different and I'm fine w/ them. I've only done one companion sidequest so far and it was fine, but I was expecting a bit deeper. That's the best way I can describe it w/out spoiling. I'm slightly underwhelmed by the city itself. I expected it to be bigger and maybe it will be as time goes on. It's not a major complaint. I haven't been on any boss fights yet, but so far, on hard setting, it's not as challenging as Origins. It's just not and the game has been streamlined w/ an almost "hold you by the hand" quest system. I won't use the "d" word as I can remember getting lost in dungeons for hours playing Daggerfall, but something in between would have been preferable.

Stuff I hate: There's only two things about this game that I hate and that is the damnable Awakening style dialogue system and the fact that no companion can wear other armor. I will admit that the dialogue system is better in DA2 than in Awakening, but I still hate it. Oddly enough, I didn't think I would have a problem w/ the followers having static armor, but so far it has really bugged me in the game. "Ooh, this is cool. I'll let Carver wear -- f*ck!" I've said that about 3 times in four hours.

I will say one thing about the tactics. I started out playing in casual just to get the feel and thought I was in godmode or something. I'm playing on hard on a first run, which is something I've never done.

I don't think I could have said it better myself.

Jesus, BioWare.  You have a list of templates as long as my arm of what works.  Why change it?  It seems to me that you're trying to appeal to the customer base that goes out and buys 10 new games a month.  It doesn't matter if they don't open the shrink wrap, all that matters is that they made the purchase.  That is bad juju.

The same people that buy 10 games a month are not going to be buying BioWare products when Modern Warefare 3 comes out, (Or whatever happens to be the new big hit next month) but I will if you don't pingeon hole and alienate me from the games I've grown to know and love.  When I see a game from BioWare I think:  Neverwinter Nights, Baulder's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins, etc.  These were INCREDIBLE games.  When I see a new game from BioWare, I know it's going to be good.  Used to know that.  Not anymore.  Dragon Age 2 is a stain on your flawless record as far as im concerned.  Very bad form.

My general thought is that everything seems rushed. It appears as though they either didn't have enough time to complete things/do things properly, or they were simply lazy.

Cant read the interface, so I tossed it in the junk drawer. If I ever get a 50+ wide screen I'll give it another go.

Man I feel bad for console gamers.

Bioware has Day 1 DLC
But they can't be bothered to include a feature (auto-attack) that they've spent the past month swearing up and down will be in the game.

Pretty. Telling.

Gamespot made an excellent review on Dragon Age 2, it tells pretty much everything about the game and is honest about the good and bad qualities of the game.

Well, incredibly impressed with it.

Dialogs and companions are top notch- unlike in DA:O, they really answer well depending on what i say to whom, and i *really* like their different emerging characters.

I am surprised by finding Aveline being my fav so far, closely followed by varric. Carver is such a insecure boy i can't help but snicker, and dalish elf gal is much less annoying than i thought.

The game so far breath life to me, and it's rare.

Really liking the new item system, but so far haven't found so many runes for armor customizations.

I want my runes to optimize my companions' armor :-)

Combat is an improvement i'd say, as i have some trouble on hard while nightmare was a cakewalk in da:o.

so far a real successor to da:o that dared make forward steps.

After my first few hours on 360:

Maybe it's just me, or a function of being in Act I, but the characters are somewhat dull and the story seems very quest-driven so far. It just feels like the game is still gaining momentum - and it probably doesn't help that I can't use Sebastian yet, and haven't encountered Isabela. The companions so far are a little bland.

The graphics really are solid. In some environments/lighting, characters (particularly my character) can look weird and awkward, but for the most part it looks great.

The inventory is a little annoying. The junk items (basically everything you can't wear, ingest, or kill with) seem totally useless given their low value at the beginning of the game. Some of the Warrior armor has a Constitution requirement, which isn't something I expected.

So far, it's been an enjoyable few hours, but I'm definitely hoping it'll get going a bit more.

From my first few hours of playing the game I wanted to give my general impression on the game. To be brief, I'm disappointed. Regardless of how long they spent developing it, if your going to charge me 60$ it better be good. To start the menus are difficult to use, and the leveling system is a mess. The inventory and loot system are dumbed down, much to my dismay. (I love a loot system, Im still a huge fan of diablo 2's loot system and in all the years  since no one can seem to come close.) The textures and overall apperance of the darkspawn took a step in the wrong direction. Combat is better in some aspects (more action can be better) but even then all I find myself doing is mashing the attack button till my thumb is numb. This feels like the same disappointment as when the most recent final fantasy came out. This is the reward for pre-ordering.

I am glad to see the female running speed looks MUCH better than the demo and that Nightmare truly seems to be very difficult so far at least. Still having a problem choosing my characters look, but thats all me not the game. That happens with pretty much every game for me. Stopped to download the Exiled Prince, and then will probably start over a thief character instead of a mage.

Dragon Age: Origins fans who feel extremely let down by DA2...I can relate with you. Sure, it was good, and it was practically worshipped, but ME2 was also extremely dumbed down from Mass Effect. The inventory, the upgrading...gutted or dumbed down. Hell, it was just as much TPS as it was an RPG. I can relate with the frustration. Loyal fans are getting tossed aside for the money. Not good. There are a lot of us who feel this way, so its not just an....anomaly.

As someone who is enjoying DA2, I do thank you for the well thought negative opinion - while I would agree Bioware has a long list of workable templates, I think they also do need to try and step-up/innovate as well. Some of those choices are obviously a bit off the mark [the inventory for companions being nixed is an idea of a bad implementation] while shifting to a voiced protaganist and creating a more frenetic combat pace while leaving tactical choices is solid forward movement and nothing that I would consider a backward slide or "drop in quality" for Bioware's pedigree.

Sorry it didn't work for you all the same :(

Thoroughly enjoying this game, its a perfect way to take up my time.I was not a skeptic to begin with however after seeing all the bashing people were doing I must say I was a little disheartened but after getting down to it and playing the game I must say it truly is awesome.

While I disagree with your opinion, whether I'm right or you're right trying to quantify and pretend we have any grasp of how many people dislike or like the game erodes an otherwise solid argument :)

System: XXbox 360

Haven't started playing mine yet (I want to finish all the DLC from DA:O & my second play-through first) but from playing the demo I can say that the fighting style will take a little getting used to. I know they changed a lot of things for the Xbox version so it's more like the PC game but I got used to the way everything in DA:O was so was hoping it wouldn't be too different. I only played the demo for a couple minutes though, so maybe it gets better.

I like the way the map is easier to see in the top right corner.

The animation is a little weird to me; I don't like how the characters look when they move their mouths. It seems too...fake..I thought DA:O was perfect so hopefully once I start playing DA2 I'll like it more, but it has a very high standard to live up to..

I've played on the PC for about 5 hours and I am enjoying it. The voice for my character didn't seem right at first(due to my getting too used to it in the demo) but as I continue to hear the voice coming out of my creation's mouth I do get more accustomed to it.
I am fine with the new system for picking abilities, although I haven't really gotten far enough to really dive into it. I like the idea of the combined attack bonuses although again I'm not really far enough to use it very much. Rogue archers are just brutally strong and if you give them the rogue ability that boosts damage when they are attacking enemies focused on others they become even more insane(I'm gonna really love when I get around to doing my rogue archer playthrough.
In the same way I wasn't fond of it in ME2, I'm not crazy about not being able to manage my companion's armor, but at least they still have slots for accessories to offset that unhappiness a bit.
I am playing as a sword and shield warrior and I expected it to be like the first game where it was best to put points into strength and dexterity until I got a bit further into the game and realized that while the dexterity points might be useful they are not really helping me equip my Blood Dragon Armor or my preorder shield.

TROLOLOL. I apologize, but I must say I am amused by the number of people hating and spewing utter cr*p about the game... only to see that they registered/signed up today. Someone creating multiple accounts perhaps? I don't know. That's not to say that the majority of the complaints on this thread are
made by such people, most of them are valid. (even though I haven't gotten to actually playing yet) It's just something to take note of.

Regarding the actual subject, I have yet to pick up my pre-order but from what I'm hearing and seeing, it worries me. A lot of mixed and negative reactions out there. Ah well, I'll get to play the game soon enough. (crosses fingers)

Let me first say I respect Bioware a great deal, so for me to post this on the day of release you have to understand just how disappointed I am with Dragon Age II.

The DVD is not complete
  • can I get it to install? -Yes
  • is this how a finished/released game media should be? -No
Having to log in three separate times simply to install a game? -Not acceptable

To have to download an 1Gb file just to have hi-res details for a game released today? -Not accaptable

To have to bounce between EA (who I hate) and Bioware's site to sort out where all my pre-order/sig items are -Not acceptable

Do I blame Bioware (fanboys put your pitchforks down) no. This failure falls directly into EA's lap, they have ruined yet another company, let me upset, and afraid that I no long wait for the release of ST:TOR.

Well I was having fun, until 5 minutes ago. 10 hours into the game, I get into the final room of this bone mine thing, and nothing appears, the game doesn't freeze, my character can move, but it's still at the loading screen. I exit and find that ALL OF MY SAVE FILES GOT CORRUPTED. I expect this from Bethesda or Obsidian but what the hell, how does it corrupt 3 autosaves and a manual save?

I'm not fussed about the 1 gig patch for PC users today considering they weren't able to finish it in time and still gave it out free of charge for us to use. It's hardly a negative point really. I am concerned about the save game import issues being reported but, either they get patched or Bioware takes some heat and does better with it in future. Win some, lose some - this company has so much expectations riding on it while it manages multiple IPs, including probably the most ridiculously costly MMO development to date. While I won't excuse all their mistakes and slip-ups, they are still a quality studio that has never failed to deliver a SOLID game, even if they make some dangerous choices.
