Your Dragon Age II Review *NO SPOILERS PLEASE*

The Good:
-Character models look nice
-Music is excellent
-Voice actors are excellent
-The conversations are well written
-I liked most of the companions. Pretty much everyone except for Sebastian and Anders, I never used them unless I was doing their personal quests.
-When you play a game like this, where your main character speaks, it's really hard to go back and play a game where your main character is silent..at least for me it is
-The animations are well done, however (and this is IMO of course) I think the speed of combat was a tad too fast. All the characters look like they were on fast forward when they fight..yet they run and walk at normal speeds. Kinda weird.
The Bad:
-Re-used environments were a huge, HUGE drag. Honestly, that's my biggest gripe about the game.
-Way too few differences in armor and robe models. It could use more variety.
-I like the combat but I guess I'm more of a realist. When I see the rogues flipping all over the place, it kind of detracts from the experience for me. Less is more.
-Not enough romance options. I never liked romance in games until I played the first Mass Effect, but now I love how Bioware does it. However, it needs MOAR! It's almost like the romances thrown into the game are just teasers. I will say this...if Bioware made a DLC pack that was all romance expansion options and situations, and nothing else, it would probably be the best selling DLC of all time.
-Way, WAY too much combat. By the end of the game, I swear I killed more than 2000 people. Again, less is more.
All in all, Dragon Age 2 isn't a bad game at all IMO. I had fun playing it. I would love to see more cinematic options in Bioware's games though..like conversations where one of the options is to punch someone out, or kill someone. Or slap them..whatever. Bioware really is the king of cut scenes in games IMO, so they need to exploit that! It's always fun seeing your character, with the armor and character that you decided to use, laying the smack down in a cut scene!

Please stop downrating a game just because its not like another.
This is the first game that made me pause. Stand up. Consult other people. Then come back. Just to pick a dialog option.
This game is a new step in video games. DA:O was written by J.R.R. Tolkien. DA2 was written by Victor Hugo.
I do hate to be the bearer of bad news... but while J.R.R. Tolkien was most certainly a strong front runner and founding father of the Fantasy novel... he DID NOT write DA:O. That legend of a man had long since passed away in 1973 before this game was ever a glimmer in someone's eye or very likely before the team of writers themselves were yet born. And while DA:O and DA2 have good story lines and the first stands to be a bit more epic than the second... they really don't stand up against LotR... a series that literally consumed Tolkien and where much of his writings that world came from. It took him a good 12-15 years to actually do LotR. And no offense to his son Chris... but riding his Father's coat tails to draw more out of that world...sucks.
Also Victor Hugo DEFINITELY didn't write DA2! The man died back in 1885 and primarily wrote poetry.
Perhaps you are confusing games like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion who used R.A. Salvatore to create a massive world for them to build a game within. Either that or you simply haven't a clue what you're talking about. Simply put you can watch the credits of the game and see a whole slew of a writing team.
Considering some of BioWare's games came out of the Forgotten Realms series a concept originally created by Ed Greenwood, it stands to make more sense that they would perhaps draw some inspiration for originality from what they knew out of that.
You know, I could write a sarcastic reply to this. But I won`t.
I case someone else didn`t understand my original comment I`ll clarify.
I played BG1 and BG2. I love RPG. I might be a Bioware fanboy, simply because the first PC game I played was BG1 when I was still in junior high. - I there ever another reason to be a fan... -
Now, while I do think it is sometimes a mistake to change a game`s style within a franchise because it can be confusing - Like: Hey, ME: Action RPG; DA: classic Stat RPG;... -, this has worked in the past (like changing Warcraft franchise from RTS to RPG).
So I understand why people get frustrated in not finding a classic Stat RPG within the DA franchise, and Bioware really did take a risk there. (maybe they could have tried the Victor Hugo story within the Jade Empire setting and gotten less backlash..).
That said. Holding each game by its own merit, I think Dragon Age 2 was truelly awesome. Not as a fanboy now (in fact fanboys are more DA:O protectors) bot as someone who enjoys game stories just as I like books, movies and plays.
Hey, I`m a sucker for quality entertainment. And that game that most did it for me until now has been this one.
P.S. Maybe you were mocking me or not. I don`t know. But in any case.. I was reffering to the styles of each author up there... and not suggesting I believe in zombie authers..
OozeMaster - Definitely not intended as any sarcastic remark. The way I initially read your remark sounded more to me like you thought they were story concepts they had done at one time but perhaps never published so I simply wanted to clarify. After your more recent remark I can now see it as you comparing a style of work a kin to each of those games in which case... yes... DA:O would be something along the lines of something J.R.R. Tolkien would have done. I may even beg to differ and perhaps suggest DA:O being more to the style of Robert Jordan. A little looser in detail where it didn't particularly matter and some elements of comedy. LotR... other than the movie... I never really found much humor in Tolkien's characters. Always had that feeling of dread, one person against all odds type thing. Either way DA:O certainly has that epic reach that DA2... really just didn't match up to.
Then again... sometimes a trilogy's part 2 is just something to get you from point A to point B and kind of rings in sub-par like a drawn out climax that's truly suppose come to a conclusion in the 3rd.
Personally... I have always felt that anyone who decides something is sequel worthy needs to have one thing in mind. If you built something Epic from the start... you not only have to compete against yourself and the work you did in the first.... the sequel you're making better blow the previous ones out of the water.
I agree.... though I enjoyed the storyline and didn't mind the game play change. This title really ought to have been given an additional title. Dragon Age, obviously to indicate the world/realm in which the story takes place... but it should have been something like Dragon Age: Kirkwall or Dragon Age: The Champion of Kirkwall. At least then they could have shrugged a bit of the flak people have been giving them because then they could literally claim that the game was a stand alone story based within the same world and general timeframe of the first rather than it being an actual true sequel.

Also wanted to note that the music was excellent this time as well. Perfect for the story. Really like the song that played when the keeper came into the alienage.
I find it amazing how harsh so many people can be. No other game since Dragon Age: Origins has delivered a good fantasy rpg experience. You sit and complain about DAII, but when you look at other games out like Gothic 4 or Two Worlds you have to realize how far above this game is over it's peers.
It isn't perfect. Neither was the first one. However, they are both amazing games and throwing a fit on the forums about enemies popping in does a disservice to game as whole. Feel free to express your opinion, but know you're making mountains out of molehills.
And you know that you are the reason they release a half assed untested and dumbed down product because they know it's going to sell well.
Yeah men... the game its for dummies

Do you have anything useful to add? Like a review of the game that's longer than four words? We all get that you didn't like it, go troll somewhere else.

Overall though, its a step back from DA:O.
Strengths
*Good solid story
*Great relationship dialogue/story with family and companions
*Terrific graphics. Major improvement from DA:O
*Good fast combat. I thought this was an improvement from DA:O
Weaknesses
*Repeatable dungeons in caves, sewers, etc.was disappointing.
*No exploration. The repeatable zones (sword coast, pit bone, etc.) were disappointing. The lack of exploration undermined th story a bit as this has always been a bonus to Bioware's storytelling.
* Inability to upgrade companion NPC armor was upsetting.
* Story interruptions (cut scenes) too a long time to get used to.

- Good story.
- Interesting cast, great random conversations.
- Conversation system (best thing they got from ME).
- Combat (great but not perfect.. see cons).
- Looks great.
Bad:
- TOO MUCH REUSE of environments. This alone makes me feel that the game truly is rushed. By the end of chapter 2 I was questioning myself whether I should continue playing or not... I was getting so tired of going through the same places again and again.
- Button mashing. Especially in the beginning when you don't have a lot of skills yet.
- I think some aspects of the game were oversimplified. Can't change companion armor. I don't think the game gives you a clue that you can upgrade their armor and where to get the upgrades. Items don't have a history or detailed description unlike in past bioware games.
- Not too great romance options.
- Scale. The scope of the story seems too small especially when compared to DAO.
- Human centric story.
- Game seems long only because of the side quests.
- Bugs.
The more I play DA2 the more I want to play again DAO. I guess I just miss the world that I explored in the first game. I am getting sick of going though the same places over and over and over again in DA2. I don't hate DA2, I still like it. There's just a number of issues in the game that I feel would have been avoided if the game was given more thought and development time.
I don't know if it's just me but I think the game would be better off if it was just named dragon age instead of DA2 and treat DAO as kinda like a prologue. The game doesn't really feel like a sequel anyway (at least for me).

* Why did I get Dragon Age 2?
- Simply because I loved Dragon Age Origins! I didn`t have the grips with that one as many had. So I was simply hoping for a simular game but perhaps a little quicker gameplay and better graphics.
Won`t bore you with a lengthly review, and Im sure I will repeat what to many have allready said before. So here goes.
* What I liked:
- Male Hawke (did not play with the female verson) Voice-acting could be better, but he did grow on me.
- Character creation. Much better that Origins and a lot more details onto the face. Also they don´t come out as sad. Still I would like more short hairstyles, like Shepards and that warden from the sacret ashes trailer etc. Scares would also be nice and some new tattoos(maybe body tattooss in Dragon Age 3?)
- Playing as a rogue was great! Love the backstab and twin fangs moves. Also tried the mage and warrior, and liked them both. Maybe warrior should have had more moves..
- Graphics.. Well it looks better than origins, but still its a bit cartoon`ish. This Im sure is down to production time..?!
- Returns of Origins characters.
- The champions armours are awsome!
* What I did not like:
- Gamespeed is to fast and sparkly/cartoonish. Somewhere between origins and DA2 would be nice!
- No auto-attack on consoles!
- Companions. This is strange for me to say as I have come to love Biowares NPC`s. Isabela is a perfect example. She is made for the young ones I guess, but she is so over the top made, it makes Bioware look a bit silly really. Big breasted Miranda in space I can understand, but this is the "dirty" middle-ages, and the fact that she was in origins makes it even more silly. Does not help that she`s somewhat of a hore either
The other characters are okay, but thats about it.
- " Have I been here before? Oh..about 6 times!" Reusing location to this degree, makes you belive this game should not have been out before christmass 2012. Very poor, and especially as the hole game revolves in and around the same city as well!
- I can see Biowares vision about a story unfolding in a big city, but boy do I miss paying an epic quest that takes you all over the world!
- Companions armours and weapons. Big disappointment! I can see why they did what they did when you look at how much time they had in making the game. We also saw this in Mass Effect 2, and its something I hope they bring back to their games. Cause I loved ventureing in to a dungeon, fightning hordes of enemies and then find some cool weapons and armours that I could fit my characters with. Its a bit of a reward for exploring I think. As some folks here allready has mention is that it gives the player more "connection" to his/her companions. I dont buy Biowares reason behind this as it gives the NPC`s more distinct look and feel. I feel its more down to the time it takes to create different armours.
How about meeting us in the middle? Give each companion a set of 10 armours only. These you would get through story progression and special missions. Same with weapons if they use a special type.
- In DA2 if you play mage, you will pick up a bunch of armours for rogues and warriors that must be sold straight away. Another point in useless loot.
- Enemies popping out from the skyes.. A bit sloppy Bioware!
- I do miss those "finnishing moves"!!
* All in all I think the game is good, its just not a game that will be in my memmory in the future. With EA in the epicture and with their plan for videogames, witch I can understand from a business point of view. Get games out as quick as possible, reduse production costs and build upon the original game with DLC at a cost is a great business plan. Problem being the overall quality of the game, especially with an RPG game witch demands a certan length of play and content. I can see people paying for Mass Effect 2 dlc, not so sure about Dragon Age 2..
We may have seen the last of games such as Dragon Age Origins & Mass Effect.. Still:
Score: 7 / 10.

The Good
+5.0 The Combat, the combat is way more fun than it was in DA:O.
+3.0 The Characters, I really like the characters. Even the ones I don't like(Fenris, Isabela) are interesting, they're pretty much the main reason I did most of the companion quests.
+1.0 Art style, the art style is fantastic and really fit the game. Loving qunari and elf redesigns.
+0.5 The music, great, especially the credit song.
+0.5 Dialogue Wheel, I find the dominant personality thing at least worth another playthrough.
The Bad
-1.0 The story, there's really nothing connecting the story until the end, making it feel like "Episodes in Kirkwall" rather than an epic. Also the cliffhanger ending.
-1.0 The graphics, for a 2011 game it sure looks average, which is unforgivable seeing that Skyrim and The Witcher 2 look great.
The Meh
-0.0 No race selection, really bioware? It wouldn't be that hard to come up with an explaination on why Elves or Dwarves are nobles. Dissapointing but not enough to effect the score.
-0.0 Recycling, I didn't have much of a reaction to this but in the future, the less of this the better.
-0.0 The bugs, I had as much buggy moments as I had in DA:O so I won't detract from score.
Closing Comments
I commend you(Bioware) for trying something different but you didn't need to change everything. If you just expanded on DA:O a lot of fans wouldn't be raging right now, also some things didn't really change for the better. As much as I love playing DA2, DA:O2 would've been better.
Final Score 8.0/10

Maybe the creators just got a different message from the community, maybe they just didnt like what origins was. The changes didnt make anything worse and improved alot of things but they made the game less than what it was before.
When your favorite punk band starts playing country songs you're going to feel betrayed whether they are just "making changes and improvements" or not.

Combat Improvements
* Good, fast-paced action combat.
* Spells are readily available and easy to use.
* Pathfinding has improved.
Combat Drawbacks
- No auto-attack for consoles.
- Tactics fail to activate or clear themselves randomly.
- AI controlled units run into traps or glitch. (Mabari warhound wanders off)
- Most combat is a test of endurance rather than skill.
Story Improvements
* None sadly. And this is coming from a guy that didn't like DA:O that much.
Story Drawbacks
- Main plot seems nonexisting during a lot of gameplay.
- Companions are less appealing and have less depth.
- Quests have tremendously little variety. (Kill mobs or return item)
Presentation Improvements
* Character models move more dynamically.
* Spell and attack effects have more flare.
Presentation Drawbacks
- Kirkwall is your prison.
- Way too many overused maps.
- Not enough enemy variety.
- Ugly, lifeless environments.

I will never give these people my money again. I purchased this and paid the extra $.99 to have it delivered release day. I have never felt more ripped off by a company.
The game is visually nice. Wonderful even. No complaints regarding "pretty".
But that's the only positive thing I can say. The story is small and crappy. The combat system has been dumbed down. The inventory system is dumbed down. I realize I'm not supposed to say this but it seems so "over the top" gay oriented I'm creeped out half the time. The number of bugs is fairly small but each is glaring if you encounter it. Even basic movement is so bad it's like it's the first product of a new software company rather than the efforts of a company that ought to be good at this.
I could go on and on.
Basically, I am incredibly pissed about how very bad this game is.
Rant over.

Any comments on the upgrading system or Armor?
I personally think the armor is terrible, it looks like cast offs from DAO(specifically the mage robes), very little depth and deffinition, very 2-D. I liked having the option to equip my companions with armor and weapons that was in DAO. The companion armor designs are good its just they look painted on (Bethany and Verric's armor to be specific), Isabel's armor fit her personality but not very realistic in design, although I'm not complaining (lol). Anders armor was not very well done, the feathers on the shoulders had no depth, I'm not even sure they are feathers. Some of the player character armor was pretty decent but not really impressive.
The only upgrade that looked good or different is Merrills, everyone else maintained the same appreance, a little change in the design would have been nice.
Overall I am very disappointed with the game, not the high quality that I was expecting. The lack of companion interaction was a total let down. The romance options were very limited and not realistic, kind of hard to get invested in a romance when you can't talk to them outside of a quest specific dialogue. I did like the choice of companions but it would have been much better if I could have had more interaction with them. The intimacy scenes were nothing more than making out with cloths on, except for one.
The lack of playable races was extremely disappointing! I expect better from a company like Bioware.
If there is an expansion in the future for DA2, I would think that opening up more playable races and interaction with companions would be fairly high on the list, as well as, more variety in the dungeon designs and locations. I was able to beat the game in 4 days, hardly an epic game.

I think Zevran's armor deserves a special mention. It looks worse than in Origins... the textures look like they were set to ultra low.

pros:
graphics, voice acting, music, action,
cons:
BUGS!!!, recycled dungeons, possible story contradictions from da;o, can't swap companions armor, the overall story seems lacking doesn't feel as strong, characters.
i will do my best to explain some of the cons without any spoilers. my main issue with the story is that some of it left me scratching my head. such as how can you be in kirkwall for 10 years but nothing seems to really change, what has your character been doing for the x amount of years in between? this might be to allow for downloadable content to be added but at this time its just jarring. some of the things that are different contradict the ending in awakening. then part of the bugs didn't read my prior choices properly and was told by certain characters that my actions were different. i don't know if that's done on purpose or what but irritated the hell out of me. the story to me just didn't seem in the same scope as the last one and that's probably my big disappointment its not clear who the bad guy is. in the first its easy, the blight, if it isn't ended it's the end of ferelden. in this one its like who's the bad guy? what exactly am i fighting against?
companions, i really didn't care for very many of them, most of the time i wasn't laughing at what they said to each other, i just shook my head. most of the time i was thinking what an f'n tool or idiot or skank. they did not seem very likeable to me. as an example, i liked anders in awakening but he really ticked me off on this one. also i agree with the post above me in that the chatting only while in their home is kinda dumb. i liked having conversations with my companions during da:o i would like to see a combination of the 2 for number 3. have conversations whenever but to start a companion quest do it at their home. that seems logical to me. hopefully this helps.

I just finished the game, I honestly rushed thru it only doing the main quests because of that stupid stupid never-shoulda-passed-QA Isabella bug but from the moment the climax hit (when the sky lit up)
it was simply engrossing

more of: Flemeth, Cassandra, Hawke and Varric
this was truly an epic tale told within a tale

Yes. If this had been treated as an expansion, I think my opinion would have been different. At least, I wouldn't have been as disappointed in the ending we received (or more precisely didn't receive). It would have been a good teaser and build up to the full sequel. (Though a lot of my issues, esp considering the maps, would remain.)

and its roots. Where we've been, and where are things going from here.
Open to dicsussion and others opinions as well.
I've been playing Bioware games for quite some time now. Haven't played them all,
I stick to mostly the fantasy setting games. I thoroughly
enjoy the Dragon Age world and mythos they have created. Everything
from the Warden's, the Chantry, to the fade and how magic works. It's a
rich world, and Origins was a very rich game that (to me) succeeded in
being a spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series. It had a lot
of atmosphere, immersion and feeling to it along with good storytelling
to pick up the torch and continue forward so to speak. Dragon Age 2 I
feel does adequately carry on that torch, but there was something
missing to me and I couldn't figure it out... till I went back this week
and played Baldur's Gate 2 for the first time in years.
The story to Dragon Age 2 I enjoyed. The end left me wanting to find out
where the Dragon Age franchise is going next with story, dying with
anticipation for any new reveals on what's next. I applaud the efforts
of trying something a bit different and unexpected with the narrative
style. It told an entertaining story, a better one than I could have
told for sure, but it lost something along the way. There seemed to be
too much focus on the character you play, Hawke. Not enough focus on
the world around him, or the people around him. I liked
my Warden character so much more (even without a voice) because he felt
like a character in a big world, and not like a world/city built
specifically around a character. He had great antagonists to face such
as the blight, and Loghain. They brought a lot of personality and
growth to the table right from the start and the whole way through.
Similarly, in Baldur's Gate you had Sarevok and Irenicus. There from
the beginning, pushing buttons, grounding your character to the story
from the get go. Giving you that sense of immersion and a long term
goal. That seemed to be missing from Dragon Age 2. Now I wouldn't go back and change things with Dragon Age 2 now. I think it's fine for what it is, but it does feel like a middle ground
that I will appreciate more once the story continues on and we get to
see where things were headed and the role this played in the grand
scheme of the world they created. For now it feels incomplete though,
or like a snippet of something planned.
The game itself sacrificed a lot of atmosphere, immersion, and
customization/replayability for streamlining, simplifying, and making
things quicker. I am glad they kept the companion banter (something I noticed as I was
playing BG 2 again, and it made me smile to see the roots of where that
all came from that I had forgotten about. Though it is nice to hear
them chat it out in the DA series rather than interrupt gameplay with
the text/tiny portrait screen) Customization was so big and added so
much replayability to Origins and the Baldur's Gate series. Being able
to choose your race, class/kits, etc. is just a whole lot of fun to me
personally. The simple thing of not being able to play as a dwarf (dwarven society with paragons, and political backstabbing was so rich), or an elf (lost culture, no real home or racial identity, and second class) in this one is a major drawback. You lose the opportunity of what they seemed to take great care in building up in Origins. I understand why it doesn't work for this particular story,
and the way the story is told, but it did leave me missing that very
much and having a character with a voice instead just wasn't a
particulary good trade off (imo).
There was also a lot of customization taken out during game play. Not being able to change out
armor on your companions didn't seem like a big deal at first, but when
I kept finding armor pieces for a class I
wasn't, it just started to stand out more and more and make me want to
stop exploring. Much of what you find being labeled as "junk" made
searching for things not very interesting, and uninspired. class skill
trees being cut, and talent trees being whittled down a lot just felt
like they were taking a lot of things out that added to personalized
character themes. No little comments when selecting characters on the
party select screen when you select, or deselect them. Item description
text, flavor text etc. gone. Just a lot of little things here and
there that don't seem like much, but when added up start to feel like a lot.
Combat was made quicker, more responsive, and in general more fun than Origins and
the Baldur's Gate series combat systems were. I like what they did
here, other than the reused method of having bandits and such keep
adding in after you kill one wave. I think that was a neat touch, just
used too often. Character animations while fighting were also better,
and that did bring a lot to the table. At times it felt a little too 'anime' rather than fantasy, but visually was still entertaining and fun to watch. So kudos on this part of the
game.
The chat menu, and choosing an option giving you an idea of
the intent behind what you are saying is another change I think was
good overall. A nice touch, and a helpful one that I am glad they
decided to implement and hope they keep (or something similar) for the
next installment in the series.
Characters were once again interesting, and fun to have around. Each of them I enjoyed, and they
each had their own personalities, there just didn't seem to be any stand
out characters like in previous games or enough opportunity to get to know them. Minsc and Jaheira, and Morte
(from Torment) come to mind, as do Morrigan, Alistair and Leliana. The
voice actors throughout all these games though have seemed to always put
out great performances, including this latest game. I think the most
reliable thing about Bioware games in my experience is you will get some
interesting, and neat characters with good voice acting to back them up.
Overall it is a good game. It's worth playing, and the story
worth it. I would reccomend this game to people. My problem was I think
I hoped for too much. Baldur's Gate was a great game. Seemed like it
single handedly revived the RPG market back when it came out. Then
Baldur's Gate 2 came along and completely blew me away. It was better
in every aspect, and the story played out so much better than the first
(which was quite a feat.) Origins came out and was a phenomenal game,
and great world put together by the folks at Bioware. I still
play it from time to time, and enjoy it. Dragon Age 2 came out and it
just doesn't surpass the first, and lost some of the "spiritual
successor of the Baldur's Gate series" feeling to me. It feels like it's headed more toward a World
of Warcraft feeling, than that old Baldur's Gate feeling. It's still a
good game, just something feels off. Do others feel the same, or how
do others feel?

one word: EPICit was a thoroughly enjoyable Tale within a tale and I hope the writers/script director stays for DA DLC's and DA3 because this is the way a story is told
I just finished the game, I honestly rushed thru it only doing the main quests because of that stupid stupid never-shoulda-passed-QA Isabella bug but from the moment the climax hit (when the sky lit up)
it was simply engrossing
love love love it
more of: Flemeth, Cassandra, Hawke and Varric
this was truly an epic tale told within a tale
this art of storytelling is memorable and engrossing and simply.. satisfying

I meant to delete that last question. I originally had this posted as a separate topic, then saw there was a sticky place for this kind of post so copy/pasted it over. Apologies.
