An actual review of Dragon Age 2 instead of just a review based on the history of the company and the first game.

8/10.  The way it should be.  It's a step back.

Origins was made for the PC.  The developers said PC came first and that Origins was a classic RPG game.  DA2 was made for the console and removed so much of what made Origins a great PC game.

So what made DAO great was the shuffle combat, the ability to dress companions in outfits that were all pretty much the same with no character, to be able to sit there for hours making potions or runes...............................?

Since when is 8.0 bad?

Last time I checked Gamespot scoring went from 1.0 to 10...not 8.0 to 10.

Whatever I'll enjoy DA2 you all just keep whining.

Edit: Damn these typos...

For everyone else who is disappointed at the direction Bioware is going, check out Witcher 2 and watch some videos. I think the devs there have the passion to make a great PC game that incorporates the console mechanics which actually make sense, but aren't sacrificing the entire classic RPG experience. I say this as someone who has bought every Bioware game on release date since BG, but cut that streak off after seeing the type of product DA2 is.

Peace out to all.

Unfortunately Withcer 1 versions were canned, I think Witcher 2 console versions are also not happening.  :(

Actually I would the ability to actually speak with your party as opposed to having them say the same 1 liners everytime you click on them....... a story that actually had some thought put into as opposed to a bunch of random quests that lead you to hack n slash braindead combat....... and maybe, just maybe a game that overall represented an RPG as apposed to a wannbe FPS? Maybe a company that didnt use its reputation to sell out their own fans that have been supporting them for 15 years? Maybe a community forum that doesnt have powertripping mods that ban you for simply disagreeing with them? I dont know, maybe Bioware before it sold out?

Yeah but the PC version can get 4/5 at best... I can't wait for my copy to come so I can see what the f  Bioware messed up...

This line of thinking is precisely why companies like EA are able to persist in their destructive practices.  They have your money already.
I agreed with some of this review and didn't particularly care about the rest of it because there are aspects of this game I don't care about.  What I care most about are mechanics and quality assurance.  This review accurately pointed out the unnecessary simplification of many aspects, not just combat.  The review seems to fail to realize that this is a console game and that one change accounts for the majority of changes, the simplification and the tediously unimpressive environments in which combat takes place.  The "leaden pace" of combat is rightly pointed out but poorly explained.  Individual attacks have little effect on elite enemies while causing the run of the mill enemies to simply explode.  The tactical elements of combat are gone, replaced by a RSI-inducing, button-mashing approach.  I understand that many people like these changes - I just don't understand why.  Understanding will not make me share that point of view.  In the end, this game isn't for me.  If I tend to think that it is a sign of Bioware's decline, it certainly isn't based solely on anecdotal evidence or even a thorough examination of DA2 - it is based on a holistic view of how Bioware has treated the Dragon Age franchise; first claiming it to be a "spiritual successor" to Baldur's Gate, then releasing an update and an expansion that left the game in a broken and embarrassing state, then, finally abandoning the game for a rushed sequel.  A modern computer game can not be created in 12-18 months and expect to be well-received.  Not even by a company like Bioware and certainly not with the backing of a company like EA.
Honest?  I don't know if the review is honest, but it is critical.  That is useful, as many have taken positive things from it and critics have seen their concerns echoed.  That much is appreciated, even if I don't usually care much about game reviews.

Actually my only complaint at the time when it was released is that the boss drops were bad... which they were and still are. Of course Bioware took that simple complaint as "we need to make it like mass effect!" ...so yea.

Even if those were the things that made DAO great, why couldn't you do them on consoles? Come to think of it, they did do them on consoles.

I'm really not following the argument there.

"I am sure the other reviews were just as honest...remember not everyone's opinion is the same."

You honestly think that people dishing out 10/10 so early for any game, let alone DA2, is based on informative opinion? Gaming reviews are, quite easily, the most unreliable and worst out of the three sectors of music, films, and games. How some of these people get into these jobs of "reviewing", I will never know, since most of them are complete and utter cretins. I thank God for the likes of Ben 'Yahtzee' of Zero Punctuation, or else I'd just avoid gaming media completely.

On-topic: Gamespot's review is accurate and fair. It's easy to see their approach since their review of Origin's can give you a good idea of what they appreciated about that game, and thus they now have reason to highlight flaws since in DA2 much has changed (for the worse, perhaps).

That said, while I consider the review fair and accurate I very much doubt I'd personally consider this an 8/10 game. I rated Origins 8/10; it was awesome as a return to hardcore PC-RPGs, but was massively unpolished and looked/played technically weak compared to modern-tech games, therefore DA2 - considering the flaws highlighed by Gamespot - will probably be a 6/10 for me. We'll see.

In any case, Gamespot's review is a good one - not the best, Gameinformer and videogamer.com have it better nailed - so there's no reason to discredit the original poster with this thread. That said, I wouldn't have actually made a thread dedicated to this one review alone.

The first DA was a BioWare game. This is an EA game. Milking a franchise for $.

Really? Milking a franchise, 2 titles and an expansion is milking?  You must've went crazy with Neverwinter Nights then. You know they said the same thing about Assassin's Creed being milked and every title gets better

Good grief... Just because a review is released on a game that you agree with, doesn't suddenly make it honest and the rest dishonest.. People have their own tastes, and you should read the actual review.. People getting hung up on scores now a days its ridiculous, with out actually reading the damned review.

Is anyone surprised that it was streamlined(dumbed down)? This is exactly what happened with Mass Effect 2. ME2 was still a great game but it was turned into more of a shooter and the story was all about the details (the main mission was mediocre). I hate to complain that games are being dumbed down and made worse by being more mainstream, but this is another instance where I hate to say it is true. It is great for many people because the games are more fun as a result of the streamining, but for "gamers" its becoming increasingly harder to find really enjoyable games. Unless we start getting some quality "hardcore" PC games, I am not sure that I'm even going to bother upgrading my PC again when my processor gets too slow to run new games coming out; that is truly a shame.
