Only preset character faces are available to me ...All the manuel choices for character design are greyed out.... why is this and how can I make the choices active? Anyone else have this problem?

You have to slide the preset character slider all the way to the right to use the manual choices.

The default faces are not modifiable so the options are grayed out. Sorry about the confusion!
Couldn't think of an elegant way to get that information across at the time and figured locking the selection to the preset slider would be enough. In retrospect a popup may have been appropriate explaining it.

After tinkering around with it I figured it out. Also Michael Hamilton why are there are no controls on either side of the of the character preset bar which would make it easier to move from preset to preset and so on?

As was said above you must slide the preset to the 3rd notch beyond the default Hawkes and the customization will open up.
