Hi, apparently I didn't know how to upgrade companion's armor:pinched:
well as I notice, only Carver that had 1 upgrade and I didn't even know how I did that:o
currently I'm still dealing with side quest and Sebastian DLC so I think it's still far from the end, I will appreciate if someone could help me explain about how to upgrade the armor (bought it on NPC? Location?)

Ya I must say it is VERY confusing. I accidently upgraded Varick's armor and didn't know how until you mentioned buying merch, now I realize where I did that. It's an interesting idea for upgrading companions without changing their iconic looks, I wonder if this is an idea they took from TOR or vis versa.

I have yet to decide if I like this idea since I haven't jumped back into the game knowing now how to do it, I may spend a few minutes going out of my way to merchants now...

I've created another character and this time is Bethany as my siblings. I've found out that her armor upgraded when I give her a gift, I believe the gift is her mother pictures or something (birthright quest). But until now I still can't find any other way to upgrade companion's armor.

I found a rune slot in one of the shops to upgrade Varric's armor... I got the upgraded armor achievement, but I have no idea how. Maybe it's something to do with gifts?

I KNEW I shoulda bought that strategy guide.

You buy the armor upgrades from different merchants in the game(pick the diamond icon in the merchant menu). Buy them and your companions will automatically equip them.

Two merchants in Lowtown have upgrades for Varric and Avaline.

In Act 1 the shop does not sell Inscribed Leather Harnes for Verric is it for Act 2?
And Avelines upgrade in lowtown.. I guess all of them are avaliable in Act 2.

As soon as I realised how to upgrade their armor I approved of the idea. I was at first very disappointed with not beiong able to change their armor but now that I've learned how it works I think it's quite a good idea.

Can the upgrades be purchased in a later act? I'm in act 2 now, but I missed a few things from act 1, will I be able to get them still?

No, sadly you have to purchase or pickup the upgrades during their respective acts or quests. If you miss them and move on to the next act you cannot get them later.

Thanks so much for this! My copy of the guide is on its way, but I was really looking for where to find these. I missed a few in Act 1, but hopefully they don't stack and the better upgrades just take the place of the stuff I missed.

They do upgrade their looks! My Merril is wearing this bad ass looking silverite armor.

No book says is act 1 but it could be that you need to get a bit farther in the story; maybe do a few mini plot missions then try again? When I get back on later I'll check it out for myself I'm not that far into the game and have only done a few missions.

No I was just being stupid, I was looking at the wrong category for each merchant... sadly I figured that out in Act 2 lol Thank you for your info and I will make sure not to miss it in my other playthrough.

the only armor that you can find in Act 1 are for Aveline, Varric and Bethany/Carver. The rest started on Act 2 and 3.

Both of the upgrade on Act 1 can be found on Lowtown merchant and for your siblings is from Birthright quest.

I assume the game informs you when you move onto act 2?
if so, then I'm still in Act I i believe, i just got back from the deep roads (and im already level 13, assuming the level cap is 20 and im still far from the end?)

I got Carver's upgrade during 'Birthright' but it never showed up in my inventory or changed his appearance. Anyone else have this happen?
