I know for a fact that at least the 1st upgrade does NOT change the appearance of your characters (I stared at Varric before buying his armor upgrade, and his appearance was the exact same.) The later upgrades might change their appearance.. haven't gotten far enough to know for sure.

As for checking whether or not you have the armor upgrade, just go to the inventory screen and look at the companion. There should be four boxes underneath the companion's armor, and as you get each uprade, one of the boxes will be lit up.

Good job "typing" it out. Image IPB

Yeah because nobody takes info from the game's forums and posts it into a tutorial somewhere else. <_<

What kinda added to the confusion with the upgrades for me was after romancing Isabella it said I received Threads of the Eastern Seas, yet her armor did not really change at all as far as I could see. Her armor remained the same, stats and looks, so not sure why that message even popped up.

I bought both upgrades in LowTown, but when I look at Varric and Aveline character, they are not wearing anything new. The tooltip still uses the old name. Do I need to give them gifts or apply runestones before they wear the new armor. It's really confusing.

I can tell I bought it since I lost money, but otherwise there is no evidence that I own these upgrades.

OH!! I understand how it works now. It doesn't change the name of the clothing. Whatever upgrade is on the new armor is applied. Example, Varric's Act 1 Inscribed Leather Harness just adds a rune slot to his armor. Where Aveline's Act 1 underpadding adds 39 attack. Nothing else changes.

I found the info near the back of the little manual that came with the game.

Where do you find Merrill's Silver-Threaded Dalish Embroidery (Top of Sundermount) at the top of sundermount. All I found was a dragon and no armor upgrade.

it's located at the top of Sundermount Act 2, which is when after you finish the deep roads quest. I haven't found it yet. I noticed that's another cave on the top.

Their armor upgrades automatically when you purchase or receive armor add ons. They don't change looks until they are completely friend or rival. Kind of like Mass Effect 2.

well I don't think so..most of the armors are change when entering act2.
I don't think there's any relation to friend or rival because I have max friend varric and his clothes don't change.

so if you have any prove , give us the screenshot :) thx

sorry I just found the prove :D
apparently not all will change their armor looks, I only now that if you maxed Merrill + Romance will change her outfit into some badass white armor

I can confirm that Anders will change his outfit in Act 3. I finished all of his personal quests and had full friendship with his romance completed. He looks fly. :D

I think the armor change coincides with the completed romance, quests and maxed friendship or rivalry. I'll have to double check this on the next play through with a diff companion.

Armor Appearance change are plot driven. Just having friend/rival does not necessarily change them - but a lot of Friend/Rival max triggers plot events.

Armor Upgrades does not change appearance, it only changes stats.

Can anyone help me? Jeven in Favor and Fault never drops Aveline's deflecting joints. Am I looking in the wrong place or what??

You're guide simply says the mission you obtain it in, not exactly where so it is of no help.

Many people have been trying to look for upgrades at shops during the wrong Act of the game, and getting confused as to why the items were not there. My guide was not a list for how to find everything (as I even said in my post), it is a checklist to make sure you get everything in the correct Act before moving on.

Ah. Well thanx for the post then. My problem is that the strategy guide (and MANY online variations) all say that Aveline's final upgrade is in the Favor and Fault mission, on the "boss" Jeven's corpse. However this is not the case. No one seems to know where it actually is tho, hence the problem :/

i think it is on jeven, but for some reason he won't drop it unless you don't have (one or both buyable?) previous upgrades

So, get her Act 1 upgrade, then kill Jeven in Act 2, THEN buy her upgrade at the shop, then on to Act 3? Seems a bit convoluted.
