personally i loved ME1, was disappointed in ME2 - though still enjoyed some of the DLC. if ME3 brings back an inventory system, has more min/maxing, and has the level of storytelling of Layer of Shadow Broker then this will blow the first two games out of the water.
also, im an RPG fan AND an overall gamer.. i like all genres not just RPGs. but when a game is advertised to be an RPG - even a hybrid - i expect rpg elements like stat management, inventory and character customization to be in the game.. with the exception of character customization, these elements were minimal at best in ME2.
its the same with an FPS/TPS.. if a game is advertised to be an FPS/TPS, i expect reactionary combat that is completely based on skill and not stats, some cool explosions, and, of course, cool weapons.
hopefully ME3 will do a better job of bridging these two genres.. if so, it should be fun.
So true, people always say ME2 was great. Sure it was by itself, but it wasn't the "great" is should have been. Meaning it should've been a great RPG like ME1. I expected that which is why I was disappointed.Pretty much sums up my position, great comment.I've always said I would have enjoyed ME2 far more if it was a spin off
or if I had never played ME1. I still would have thought it was "Gears
of War with character levels and interactive dialogue" (there aren't
really any "choices") but I would have had a higher opinion of it.
My main problem with the game has always been that it fails at being a sequel to the first game.
And as far as what Christina Norman said I still have my reservations. Let's see just how much more of an RPG ME3 will be.
This entire post - complete with quotes - is exactly how I feel about ME2.
It was a good game but it was a terrible sequel.
However, with the direction that Bioware seem to be going - first with ME2 and now with DA2 - I have a horrible feeling that ME3 will just be more ME2 but with token gesture RPG elements thrown in to try and appease those that didn't like it.

*Sigh* I'm afraid so. I've loved Bioware RPG's for well over a decade and I have serious concerns with the way things appear to be heading. Once upon a time I would see that it was Bioware and buy it without hesitation. Now? I'll wait 'til after its out and see what people who have similar tastes to me say. I may still buy it to finish the story even if it gets panned, but if that happens I'll wait until its bargain binned. Please Bioware, don't let us down.

You don't have to wait that long... if it's anything like ME2, by christmas time next year you will easily be able to get it for $20.
I still think we should give Bioware some benefit of the doubt, for example this is my optomistic view of ME3:
1) ME2 and DA2 both got decided at a very early stage to be be more streamlined with less RPG features to gain a wider audience(EA), so there was no way to undo what had already been done.
2) One thing I actually believe will happen: a delay. Hopefully IF EA had any reluctantcy to have a delay, it's gone, incentive coming from the massive amount of AAA games being released by the end of this year and the reception DA2 got. The delay will probably be until Q1 2011 or maybe even spring. It will get announced at E3, where they still can keep the hype going by giving us more information about ME3.
3) If the developers are anything like the Bioware I knew, they spent the time they had from creating a streamlined ME2 game to the eventual release of ME3, to create a much more detailed and immersive ME game than ME1 could have ever been. This means creating unique or enchanced RPG features that will actually please both the experienced RPG fans and be accessible to newcomers.
Things like: in-depth leveling system to create a more unique shepard, actual weapon upgrades/attachments, looting(doesn't have to be weapons and armor but it can't be just useless money either), more civilzed planets like ME1 Citadel or ME2 Illium, and finally more immersive, expansive, and detailed planetary exploration!
In summary if Bioware used ME2 and DA2 as an excuse to keep EA happy with there "streamlined ideas" to gather more casual fans, giving Christina the direction for that game; so instead the doctors can spend most of their time and effort in making ME3 the best possible Action-RPG game, I will be happy and pre-order ME3. Of course I just won't accept Biowares word anymore like I did with ME2, I will need actual proof that this isn't just a streamlined game, that there is more to it than just corridor shooting and interactive dialogues. If the pre-orders suck though, I might as well wait until it goes bargain price, just so I can have my own way of getting back at Bioware for making such a stupid move and wasting my money and hype with ME2(collector's edition no less).
At this point (just about 8 months away from the release) a delay will only help to solve bugs, glicths, performance issues etc...
The game, the mecanics and the design choices are already set in stone.
Again, ME3 will be ME2 (or DA2 as it is just the same thing) without planet scanning. And maybe (hopefully) they have just stoped the multiplayer component.
So after DA:origins on consoles, ME2, DA2, I really believe that ME3 will sell less then the second one (that actually have sold less than the first one).
I really hate the new Bioware general approach: 1-2 year development cycles (an Rpg is not FIFA), signature editions, pre-order bonus, pre-signature edition, basic componets of the game sold separately (armours, weapons), lies (it is an rpg...), more lies (metacritic...), more more & more lies (ME2 ps3 shortage on this forum), more more more more lies (ME2 ps3 a success), more more more more more lies... etc...
And I really really really HATE their new "rpg" formula: just monotone action schemes, power-up (a' la shoot em ups), mostly useless dialogue cut scene, linearity (short corridor levels, no exploaration, no looting, no party&inventory management etc..).

In the interviews and the blogs I have read, it seems clear to me that Bioware has been working on this trilogy since day one.
When ME came out they were already ahead, working on the sequel. When ME 2 came out they did not stop for a second, but has kept up the pace on tremendous DLC's and even making a DLC to unify the gap between game 2 and 3. If thats not dedication I dont know what is.
If you look at ME 2, it is a perfect 10/10 game. It has improved everything ME was IMO.
I am just as it is starting up another shepherd in ME to do it over again from the beginning. And I get a little frustrated with all the small details lacking in it.
ME2 was a huge jump up, and I believe they will fine-tune the stuff they already got (add ome new team-members, new weapons, new plot-hooks etc.)
So, am I buying ME3?
Hell Yeah! It is going to be the best Action-RPG finale made as a game I believe the world has seen!
DA and DA2 are very different from the ME saga, and I dont think there is a reason to even compare the games.
I would actually say DA 2 is 9 out of 10 for me, and I am doing my second rerun of the game.

After about 8 to 10 hours of play, I can say that for me, it's one the best games I've played. I never was and never will be an RPG fan. When I say RPG, I mean turn based style games like Final Fantasy and such. I really hate those.
But, I really like the Mass Effect style of the action/RPG where the game is focused probably 60% action with A LOT of story and 35-40% of RPG elements.
Like others said, I don't think Bioware thinks they will please everyone, but I do think that this kind of game will still reach a ton of people.
I know I'm a statisfied customer and I will shell out 60$ for the next one, no problem.

The story was worse, name me one memorable experience in ME2 compared to the many in the original.
From my perspective? The destruction of the Normandy, the intro of the Normandy 2, Rescuing Garrus from Omega, Jack, Finding Tali on Haestrom, the Flotilla, the "ghost ship", playing as Joker, the renegade solution to Jacob's loyalty quest, making the Batarian drink his own poison, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Meeting Legion, and EVERY MOMENT OF THE SUICIDE MISSION especially the long walk.
I lost Legion to the vents at the start of the SM. I was consequently paranoid thorughout the rest of the mission. It was heart-pounding.
Edit: Oh, oh! and a lot of bits in Overlord.

I'm about the same with a few differences. I LOVED ME1. I liked DAO. Initially I thought ME2 was "just OK" but I warmed up to it and now love it. Basically I wanted ME2 to be more plot driven instead of character driven. The gameplay won me over though.
In DA2 I initially hated it and quit just when I got into Act1. A few days / week later I started playing again and I still don't like "Act 0" but I'm liking the rest of the game well enough. Heck a few quests even had me on the edge of my seat [which was Act 0's problem .. I just didn't care]. DA2 isn't perfect and some of it's failings are beggining to wear on me but that's life.

Mass-Effect
- Combat - Simply more exciting you could really mix it up, instead of 95% of combat being behind a wall (Snooze).
- Easily more customizable weapons mod/ammunition.
- More interesting story.
- I want to say inventory, but without a organization feature it did become fustrating, but I feel it helps add depth ultimately to story and combat.
- General customization - 2 removed a lot of customization you could do with your character and his weapons. Upgrade system just didn't cut it. Ability to modify your weapon as a point of inventory not ability added a lot of depth and customization to your situation on the run.
- Abilities and passive effects were not only reduced a lot in two but reduced it's effectiveness and put into two categories. So ME1 has a point up on this.
- Visuals were much better very impressive huge improvement over the original.
- Voice acting I thought was very good, didn't mind it on the original.
- More weapons to choose from then the typical 4.
- Characters - I don't consider them better then Mass-Effect 1, but they were on equal status for me, enjoyed the crew quite a bit!
- Fun point to have upgrades you did to your ship matter in the end, only bad thing is you really didnt get much use of it until the very end.
Ultimately despite my faith waviering in their abilties, after 14+ years of supporting Bioware I won't stop now and I'm hooked on the story and will buy it and play it through best of my abillities to finish it!
