Here's the scenario, I have Sten as my main tank (possibly not the best choice but I like the character). I have recently been playing around with tactics (actually advanced tactics with the mod) and have been very happy with the overall results.
However what I want Sten to be able to do is: use his nice 2 handed wapon when only facing one or two enemies, then switch to his sword and shield combo when he gets surrounded and starts to take a beating. I didn't think this would be too hard but so far I haven't even got close. Either he gets stuck constantly switching between weapon sets or he never changes.
Any help in this area would be appreciated.

Switching between weapon sets?

All I can say is...why? Splitting between 2 different tree's is NOT something I would recommend, focus on one. Two-handers can tank, maybe not as brilliantly as a S&S. Two handers also have a couple of nice AOE attacks.

Well since I have had Sten I have been focusing on only one tree, S&S but before i got him the focus was on 2H so he has a couple of low level 2H abilities that I never use, thought it would be nice to use them, at the start and end of the battles when he is only fighting one on one.
Like I said I've been playing around with tactics trying to get more out of my characters and thought this would be a cool feature to have.

Okay well the only way i can think of you doing it is manually switching his weapon set when you want it to be, and see if you can set up his tactics to contain both weapons moves? Dont know if it will work
or you could have it as: surrounded by at least 3 enemies > swap weapon set
also dont know how that would work either

If I've a character who switches between weapon sets I usually just have a different set of custom tactics for each weapon set and switch between them manually. If you want to do it fully auto the following might work but would require a lot of tactics slots.
1st - Any tactics you want used all the time eg drinking health poultices, activating threaten.
After them something like Self - Surrounded by 3 or more enemies: Jump to Tactic #
Then Self - Any: Switch to weapon set 1 (this would be the 2-handed weapon set)
Then the tactics for 2h weapon use
Then Self -Surrounded by enemies: None: Jump to Tactic 1 (this is needed to stop you switching weapon sets when theres no need)
Then Tactic # would be Self - Any: Switch to weapon set 2 (sword and board)
Then the tactics for sword and shield
After getting Combat Training IV you'll probably need to start investing in Combat Tactics

Thanks for the replies and the help.
@Amazon Queen
I don't know if i have the latest version of advanced tactics, but the one I have will only let me jump down the list not up, i.e. I can't jump back to tactic 1 as you suggest. Please could you confirm what version you have and that jumping up the list is definitely possible in your version.

If you leave the bottom tactic spot empty apparently it cycles through the tactics (read that on the forum, dont know how accurate it is)

:sigh: you're right, what I suggested won't work as written, sorry.

1. normal tactics eg. taunt & potions.
2. swap weapons at eg. X health...
3. tanking tactics.
Note that you will need to put him back to two handed at the end of the battle but that is better than getting locked into a endless loop.

Thanks to everyone for all the help, after much experimenting I have come up with a solution that I am very happy with. For anyone who is interested it lets my tank (sten) use a 2H weapon and the related moves when fighting small or weak mobs and at the end of battles when I am mopping up the last few stragglers, but makes sure he is using sword and board for large mobs or high ranking enemies, I guess similar tactics could also be used for a rogue to auto switch from bow to melee or for arcane warriors to switch from staff to melee.
These tactics do require the advanced tactics mod to be installed.
1. Ally being attacked by range or melee >> Taunt
2. Enemy rank is elite or higher >> Jump to 7
3. Self: At least 5 enemies are alive >> Jump to 7
4. Self: Any >> Switch to weapon set II (2 Handed)
5. Self: Any >> Deactivate shield wall
6. Self: Surrounded by no enemies >> Jump to 11
7. Self: Any >> Switch to weapon set I (Sword and Board)
8. Self: Any >> Activate shield wall
9. Self: Being attacked >> Shield Pummel
10. Self: Being attacked by melee >> Shield Bash
11. Self: Surrounded by at least 2 enemies >> War Cry
12. Self Health < 25% >> Use Health Pot Most Powerful

Move number 12 down to number 1. If you only have <25% health casting a taunt will take up too much time.
