Why is it that when EA gets their tentacles around a game, I always have problems with said game?

I'm now getting an error when I attempt to login to my EA account within the game telling me to insert a disk into drive blah blah, and won't let me continue without doing so.

Unfortunately, I downloaded from EA (mistake) and therefore do not have a disk.

Anyone have any fixes that don't include using archaic DX9?
