I install the game, I configure everything, I click play.  Game launches as a small bordered black window which immediately goes away (too fast to possibly read) and no program starts.

In addition, AVG Free Antivirus detects a problem with DFA.dll in directory C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\mtka_tmp, which is where an activation .exe is located.  Turning AVG off with a fresh install changes nothing, it still breaks.

I've reinstalled 5 times, and the problem has happened every time with no change.

My system specifications:
Vista 32 bit
Intel Core2 Quad @2.40gb
4 gig ram
Nvidia GeForce 8800GT (drivers updated to recently released beta; directX has also been updated from disk)

I'm having the same issue. EA's helpful suggestion was to configure my anti-virus to avoid conflicts, to power cycle my modem, and to disable my firewall.

I tried those things. I told them in my initial message to them that I'd tried those things. So they're of no help at all. I still can't play my game and apparently the tech support for it is useless. I'm not happy..$60 for a game that's basically as useful as a rock to me at this point.

Same issue here... :(

Problem solved
AVG realy dose some truble there
if you start the Game for the 1st time the
"dragonage2_activation.exe"
C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\mtka_tmp
whants to connect to the internet..
and check for illigal game or activation date..
which is tomorrow

just do the following step:

open AVG
-> Tools
->Advanced settings
->resident protection
->exeptions

tehre you have to make an exeption for the folder
C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\mtka_tmp
 then it should work

if you dont do this...
AVG will delete the dll as part of virus protection

hope it will work for you

but i cant get pass the Launcher now...
when i hit start game.. nothing happends at all
but i hope it will work tomorrow

Any news on this?

Still can't play, no way to work around it.

I get bugs etc. in a massive MMO, but something as basic as starting a game is really frustrating, especially in a limited single-player world.
And no, the awesomeness of DA1 doesn't excuse Bioware for releasing a game sorely lacking in techical qualities this time.

So yeah, anyone have a work-around please?

Or maybe a word from Bioware...

dunno.. worked for me

try this then
run the
"dragonage2_activation.exe"
at
C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\mtka_tmp
directly

if its still not working
uninstall the game...
reinstall the game...
set the exeptions in your AntiVirus Program for the folder
C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\mtka_tmp
and the start the exe files

if its still not working then..
then i cant help you...
worked for me...
even if iam not happy with this kind of workaround

al this copyprotection crap...
illigal users dont have all that kind of trubble..
and we honest customors get treated like criminals...

its realy a shame...
shame on you EA
