Years before I had my own XBOX, I made a non-live account under one gamertag.    Once I got my own console, I created a new one and went live.      Bioware shows the old, non-live version ... is there a way to change it to my current, actual gamertag?

Go to the EA Profile manager, the login will be the same as what you use here:
https://profile.ea.com/

From there you can add a new "persona" for your Xbox account.

When I try to add my gamertag it tells me : Sorry, that Xbox LIVE Gamertag has already been taken. Please try another one.

Yes! It's already taken, by me!! :(

Ok, you will have to get EA to transfer your Xbox persona to your current account. Do you still have access to your other EA account? That should make it easier.

Keep in mind that transferring a persona does not mean that the DLC for that persona gets transferred.

All my DA content has been on PC - so it shouldn't affect that at all right? My concern is mostly for future games, if I go back and forth between platforms, I'd like it to all mesh.

Consider your EA Profile like a central hub. You link things to it like your Xbox gamertag or your PSN account.

If you have PC DLC you will want to link your Xbox account to the same EA profile that you have your DLC on.

And for clarification your EA profile is the same account (email/password) that you log into the BioWare Social site with.
