So, how do you set it to DirectX9?

In the launcher, click "Configure" and it is in the video options.

I also tried installing the latest nvidia driver (267.24) but no joy there either.

Every time I try to start from the launcher my AVG detects a virus, and then the DOS screen blinks on and off, and then nothing. Trying the driver update, and my game is already set to DirectX9. :/

These sound unpleasantly familiar.
I install (takes a few tries and if fails about half the time.) But now I technically have a fell install and I even did the directx 11 update. So I configure a bit, mostly red from low to medium. (No hi texture patch yet). Then I hit the play button. A dos looking box appears for a half second then leves. And thats it. Three hours of the is getting aggravating.

AVG may have killed this as I saw a file as a virus as a part of the DA2 start up and tossed it into the vault, and IO can't quite get is back to working.

Mine wouldn't start at all..after playing around a bit, I finally got it to work.

Try setting the game to work under DX9...

From the game launch menu.

clcik "Configure" button
Chose "Video" on the Dragon age 2 menu
Then on the Renderer catagory..choose Direct X 9
Click X on upper right to close window.
Answer YES to saving settings..

Mine won't let me shift from Direct X 9. I tried updating the drivers and that didn't work. I'm not sure what to do now.

Well I did the download on another PC and copied the install files over, and it all seems to work OK now.
During the original download, I had copied the files from my steam pre-download into my EADM download folder in an attempt to trick EADM into using the steam files. I guess this broke it. in the long run.

I could run the launcher, do the release date check and start the game exe but just got the "Dragon Age II stopped working" message, which all went away when I used a fresh copy of the download, so I guess this error CAN mean corrupted files of some kind.

So my advice would be: re-download, and if you fiddled with anything whilst doing the download, DONT this time :P

Playing now. Woohoo!

Glad to hear you're up and running, evilC1.

For those who have AVG installed, I recommend turning it off during the install process and game launch as that seems to be interfering, as Crow T. Robot and r8ermaniac have described. We'll be investigating that issue to determine the cause.

Lastly, those wanting to play in DirectX 11 need to get the latest beta drivers for their video card. If you're still having troubles, reduce your settings to DX9 and turn off Vsynch.

Im pretty sure its not a video driver issue. There is not even any sort of start up proccess.

After hitting play, there is NOTHING!! as in there is nothing that happens. No screen distortion, signifying some sort of processing, no error message, not even a noticeable increase in CPU load, or disc spin speed.

This is just like DA1

I was very disappointed when my copy of Dragon age 2 failed to work at all, I've completely disabled AVG and reinstalled the game twice now and still no luck, I trust that Bioware a working very hard to make a fix for this but whether or not they are I still see this situation as very unnecessary I expect to buy a game, and when I buy that game I expect that game to work period.

I have another problem trying to run it after installing it twice.

It comes up as;

"We're Sorry, an error has occurred"
There is a problem with your game's setup. Please reinstall your game.

I've reinstalled it and it's the same error comming up?

Edited: Does this have something to do with it asking to do a check for release date time? Never seen this before.

My game woun't start at all - I have checked DX9 settings, check the game download (Steam) and used the repair tool to check the game integrity. Everything seems to be in order. Pushing the PLAY button - nothing happens - nothing at all - no error message, no program or process hanging in the background.

BAH! I was so looking forward to this... What's wrong BioWare?

Its probably detecting your DRM as the spyware that it is. Which is normal for new games and your fault for not sending the exe to  them for testing before hand.

I got a reproduceable crash when I started a new game during the video after character creation - every time the narrator mentioned the battle at Ostagar.

Then I started running the game in windowed mode and haven't had a crash since. Maybe I'll try new graphic card drivers and maybe fullscreen works then.

its not biowares fault... completely anyway, this is more eas doing by rushing development to quick and pushing it out of the door before it was even ready, ill give it two days to come up with a solution otheriwse ill be returning the game until its in a playable form

Well my turn lol. Well I installed the game, it ran its scan of my system and I was super pumped to play, clicked play and then nothing. The startup page for DA2 went away, little wait sign on my mouse, and then nothing happened at all. So I did the direct 9 thing, nothing, did the vsync, nothing, reinstalled it nothing. So what am I going to do now to make this amazing game work?

Ok I'm not great at computers but I solved my problem, thanks to Wowwilly629's idea of creating a pathway through my AVG. But what seems to be a problem for a lot of people is that the 'Release date check' doesn't happen for them, and that i think is where the problem is. My first problem with the release date check was that my AVG was thinking it was a virus, but even when I disabled my AVG uninstalled the game and reinstalled, still it did not come up. So following the advice of Wowwilly629 I went to my AVG into settings, exceptions, and added the path then had to still manually click on the application for it to work, after that, my game started just fine.
