What spells does Merrill start with? My Hawke is a Mage, and I'd like his spells to complement hers. I know she doesn't get Creation; does she start with more Elemental/Primal or Entropy or Spirit or what?
Also: is a sword/shield Warrior entirely necessary for Hard mode, or can one get away with a two-hander Warrior for a "tank?" I'm not sure I'm sold on always needing to have Aveline.

She starts with Arcane Bolt in Spirit, Hex in Entropy, and Stonefist in Primal.
I don't think you need a S/S warrior for Hard, unless you actually mean Nightmare. You just have to be more careful and take advantage of damage mitigation spells and stuns.

On the subject of Merrill, can she ever learn healing spells? I really like her character but I usually only run with 1 mage and they need to be able to heal and cast protective buffs.

From what I've heard, Merrill lacks the Creation school, so she can't actually heal. That said, the Heal spell isn't all that seriously useful in DA2, not like it was in Origins.
So she has some Entropy and Primal going on? Hm. Then maybe I'll make my Hawke go with Elemental, Creation, and Arcane. Seems like it could be a good mixture.
And yeah, Hard mode, not Nightmare. I'm already struggling on Hard, but that's just because I've been a moron with building this little proto-Hawke. I gave him Horror, Heal, and Hex of Torment, and so he's almost entirely useless for adding damage, or dealing with more than one enemy at a time. When I was fighting with just Carver and Aveline, I had almost nothing I could do. I think if Hawke had some AoE damage to lay down (Fireball, maybe?), then I'd be in better shape in early Hard mode.

Love having my S/S Hawke use Shield Bash(upgraded) on a lieutenant and catching 1-2 normals with it. They're all staggered and I follow it up with Merrill's upgraded Chain Lightning. mmm goodness.

Anders lacks Entropy, Merrill lacks creation. But good god merril has the aoe situation down hard core.
