Hi, im not gonna get into too much info since i dont want to do any spoiling.

I go to see Nef's mother, and after ive used all the conversation options with her, i ask her if i can investigate her room. The mother talks for a little while, and then the PS3 just crashes and shuts down on me. The red light blinks, and i have to push the front on/off button to stop it blinking, then again to turn the PS3 back on. This happens everytime at the same time, and as far as i know i have the latest patches etc.

Ive now tried to restart the mission when i load the a save game, and it shuts down as im off to see Asaria or whatever her name is, to find the mother.

Im about to test ant see if this happens in other games too now.

Thanks and regards,
grimm

It shuts down while playing GT5 as well.. anyone know why the ps3 would do this? it doesnt shut down if just turned on and idle in the main menues.

I did some searching and people are talking about overheating, and thus the ps3 shuts itself down. the weird thing is my ps3 has never had this problem before, ive had it since early 2008 and its been sitting in the same position since then, on a table with wents free on back and right/top side.. I disconnected it and felt it, it was warm sure but i dont feel its alarmingly so. However, when i blew into the vents on the back, a little dust cleared (there was no dust clogging up the vents themselves) and then some fine gray smoke came out...

Its now cooling down by my balcony door, so ill try it in a bit and see if it does this again once its cooled down.

It sounds like overheating to me too. Maybe over the years dust settled on your ps3 chips and cooling.

So even though you never moved it. It can still be a cooling problem.

Do a backup of your ps3 now since in a worst case scenario you got a YLOD incomming. Usually it starts of with an overheating problem and the little blinking red light.

It was indeed YLOD happening... I was able to get it to work just long enough to get the ME2 disc out, but no time to backup all my saved game data etc..

Is it possible to switch the HD over to a new PS3 system, make the backups that way, and then insert the original disc back into the new PS3 and put back the backups that way? I think it would be, but since the discs are encrypted, or so im told, they might also be tacked for the original PS3 they were installed on?

Alternativly, put the old HD in another persons functioning PS3, and serial connect that one to my new PS3 and transfer it that way?

I am lucky to have family who will help me buy a new system already, but all that saved game data and other things like years worth of trophies and stuff would really be nice to keep... Thousands of hours worth of gaming..

The game disc sees to no difference between two different PS3s. Swap out your hard disc and put it in another PS3 - nothing lost. Your Trophy data is stored on the PSN servers (and HDD) and linked to your PSN acccount.

Actually, the new ps3 is from what i read prompting you to format the old harddrive when you put it in the new ps3. thankfully, with the help of a hairdryer, i got it working, hopefully long enough to transfer all its data to my new ps3, its at 55% and counting.. *touch wood*

Hopefully it will come through safe and sound and i can just continue on the new slim.. ive learned my leason now and will be getting backup media soon!
