I am getting the same issue. Haven't tried DX9 setting yet; will try that next. Updated my graphics card driver as well. This is really frustrating.

Seems its more prone to crash the longer you play, regardless of settings. Just tried it with DX9. Played for 2 hours, crashed. Played again for about an hour, crashed. Played again for 30 minutes, crash.

Really hope this issue gets fixed.

Yeah... I've noticed that too. DX 9 has it running "stable", but after a few hours of playing it's going to crash or simply lock the video card up forcing me to reset the machine.

So annoying. Either way, I'm gonna go ahead and grab 2 570s so I can actually take advantage of DX 11 when it gets patched right.

Crashes to desktop for me in both DX9 and DX11 - can't get past character creation (in DX9 it crashes during the narrative immediately afterward). Demo didn't do this.

Edit: updating my Nvidia drivers to the latest WHQL version (266.58) seems to have stopped the crashes for me, even in DX11.

System specs: Intel Core i3 CPU, 4G RAM, Nvidia Geforce 330M with 1G VRAM.OS: Windows 7 64-bit SP1.

I have the same problem with the game crashing on the first opening sequence. I have downloaded and updated my graphics card driver and the same problem persists.

How do I revert to DirectX 9?

My game was crashing at the very first scene and when I reverted to DirectX 9 and full screen has worked perfect since.Hopefully they will release a patch or something soon.

What blows my mind is that the demo played fine... It's the actual release that won't play.

I warned everyone reading the Demo's own Tech forum that it wasn't going to prove very useful as a predictor for the Full Game.

Is it normal to have this many freaking problems with a game?

For Geforce graphics card owners, it has become endemic.

Having just reviewed this message thread, I found a great many of the comments contain nothing for the members to make any comparisons with.  A "Me, too" is useless in a PC Tech problems thread:

Damn... why did I buy this game? I can't even get 5 minutes continuous game play out of it before it crashes

I had similar problems with this game. My freeze and crash would happen during conversations at random times and the sound would stutter and I would have to restart the computer. However, I think I have found my solution.

I'm not sure that this will apply to all of you but the problem seems to be my sound card. I am using a Creative Audigy 2 sound card and I might not have the most up to date drivers for it. Once I switched to my onboard sound I haven't crashed since and the funny thing is the audio sounds even better than before. If you are using your own sound card try updating the sound drivers or switch to onboard sound and that might fix it for you. I will play more later and see if my crashes have indeed stopped, and I will update. :D

Well for me it seems my crashes are caused by this:

"Display Driver amdkmdap stopped working and has successfully been recovered."

Which means its my display driver/video card. Which is odd, because my card is the one the box recommends(ATI 3850 512 MB) and all my drivers are up to date.

DA2 seems to crash (for me) only during dialogue scenes. On my Nvidia 560 ti the game will freeze and almost instantly drop to windows 7 desktop with a "stopped working" message. Sometimes I can reload and skip past the same point where I crashed before by choosing the dialogue options as fast as possible only to hang at a following dialogue point.

Frustrating. I have yet to get past the first hour of the game :/

(For what it's worth - running on High with DX 11. Combat and cutscenes are fine.)

Sorry to hear that.

Make sure you have updated your computer (Display card, DirectX, OS).

In contrast, I haven't had a crash or a need to restart in my 20 hours of playtime, up to this moment. It's a first for any game I purchased. I did get a new rig recently: i7 870, AMD/ATI Radeon 6970 (1 Gb DDR3), 8GB RAM, Win 7 x64, running on very high with 24'' monitor.

I'm sure my old rig would have its fair share of issues running this game.

The game constantly crashes for me too every 1-2 hours, at random. Mostly situations like initiating/exiting a coversation, entering/exiting inventory, etc. The worst thing is: it's not simply exiting to windows, it shuts down my whole computer! I'm using DirectX9 settings, and 2x AA (sometimes I disable AA, but that didn't help)

My rig:
Windows7 Ultimate X64
AMD Phenom X4 955  3,2 Ghz
GeForce 8800 GTX 768 Mb
4 Gb DDR3 1300 mhz

Now I'll try the new Nvidia beta driver, it says it's improves compatibility with DA2. I'll check back with good or bad news.

Ok, the new driver worked for me, it didn't crashes now like that. I played for like 4-5 hours without problem. Than there was a game freeze, but that could have been anything else.
The other thing is, that my rig should have no problem with high settings - dx11 mode, I don't know if the high settings is actually using any dx11 feature, Maybe just dx10, but that should be no problem.
So the main conclusion for all Nvidia users is: the Beta Driver is actually working...

Having the same problem: "Dragon Age 2 has stopped working" after between 2 and 15 minutes of playtime. I've tried both DX11 and DX9 settings, it doesn't seem to make a difference. It occured once within a battle and a second time on the character creation screen, so there's no pattern there, either.

Running Windows 7 SP1 64bit on a E8300 @3.0Ghz with 4BG of RAM and a 9800GTX. I'm running the latest stable nvidia drivers (266.58), latest DirectX version installed.

The Event Viewer shows two subsequent events when the game crashes. The first is the following error:

Faulting application name: DragonAge2.exe, version: 1.0.5174.0, time stamp: 0x4d4b03e5
Faulting module name: nvwgf2um.dll, version: 8.17.12.6658, time stamp: 0x4d27c365

Report Id: f958eeb7-4e81-11e0-8817-891d36b2baf1

Then comes the following warning:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

So an update to my previous post. I thought I was in the clear after switching to onboard sound but it finally just crashed on me again. Crash only happens during dialogue conversations. Crash forces me to end task and if I try to start the game again, my sound starts popping like mad so I have to restart.

My system spec:
AMD Phenom II X4 B55 3.8ghz
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1gb gddr5
4gb RAM

I am running in DX11 on High settings, AA x4, Vsync On, Hi-Res Textures enabled.
Besides the crashing, the game runs perfectly smooth.

Thats basically the same issue I'm having. Only instead of nvlddmkm its amdkmdap.

Don't know how helpful this is to anyone, but I've seen a few mentions of 9800GT_ cards here, and DA2 is running beautifully for me on High with the default drivers included for the card with Windows 7. According to Device Manager, that's version 8.15.11.8593, dated 5/14/09.
