Is it normal to have this many freaking problems with a game? I got the game at the midnight release and I have yet to be able to play it. I have NEVER had this kind of problem with ANY game I have ever played. I'm kinda pissed off.

You ever see the CoD: Black Ops release? That game had (And still has, for me at least) more bugs than an ants nest.

Im a bit of a veteran when it comes to games not working though, the rig I operate from is best described as a turd in a fancy box.

Anyway, OT:

Same issue as others: demo worked like an angel, released game crashes to desktop every few minutes.

I'll change to dx9 and see the results, if it's positive i'll try getting another post up here confirming but if I forget and don't post just assume it's all good on my end.

Okay, issue is sorted for me:

Switched to DX9 and it's running great with no noticable change to graphics.

the game has crashed for me numerous times sofar.. it's always at a similar point in the game too... i'll be playing.. get to a cutscene with conversation... choose a certain conversation option and then when the game goes to resume 'normal' play the game will crash me to the desktop... i found resuming and trying the same conversation options nets me a crash...however if i choose different conversation options the 2nd time it doesn't crash... maybe this will help some of you?

my system: winXP, DX9, 4gb ram, Intel Core2Duo E6550, Asus Nvidia GTX 460

Reading the boards and trying to fix the full system crashing but still having issues if I use DX9 or DX11. I have upgraded to the latest graphic driver and it seems to have made it worse. I use to be able to get up to an hour before crashing now its less than 3 minutes.

System: Win7, 6GB, Intel core 7 965, Dual ATI 4850 crossfire

Make sure you have loaded all patches: http://social.biowar...age/da2-patches

Meanwhile, if DirectX11 is writing checks that your graphics card can't cash (like me or Ickorus), then make sure you have selected DX9 in the DA2 config program, or perhaps better, select DX11 but with Detail set to High (not Very High) as this will also use DX10 instructions (and not DX11). And make sure you have loaded the Texture Patch to maximise your experience: http://social.biowar...age/da2-patches

If your graphics card should be good enough, but you're still finding problems, this thread may have the answer: http://social.biowar...0/index/6571278

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Still crashes in about 10-15 minutes of playing. Any idea when the next patch is coming?

Not sure but last I checked XP only runs dx 9. Vista runs dx10. win 7 runs dx11.
If you have dx 11 card on Vista the texture patch might work for you.
Otherwise run dx9.
Close background services.
Defrag often.
Saving often seems to reset vram runtime. If I play too long without saving, sometimes crashes to desktop but comes right back up without restarting the game.

Small update: I've upgraded to the latest nVidia BETA drivers and now instead of crashing, the game just freezes for about a minute occasionally. I can keep playing afterwards, but I don't need to tell you this situation is hardly ideal.
Another thing: switching screen resolutions in the graphics settings or ALT-TAB'ing out and then back into the game crashes the game without fail. (This is perfectly reproducible on my system, whereas the above problem appears to happen at random).

Having the same problem: "Dragon Age 2 has stopped working" after between 2 and 15 minutes of playtime. I've tried both DX11 and DX9 settings, it doesn't seem to make a difference. It occured once within a battle and a second time on the character creation screen, so there's no pattern there, either.

Running Windows 7 SP1 64bit on a E8300 @3.0Ghz with 4BG of RAM and a 9800GTX. I'm running the latest stable nvidia drivers (266.58), latest DirectX version installed.

The Event Viewer shows two subsequent events when the game crashes. The first is the following error:

Faulting application name: DragonAge2.exe, version: 1.0.5174.0, time stamp: 0x4d4b03e5

Then comes the following warning:

@GuildsmanCoren, I have a similar specification (9800GTX, W7 SP1 64bit, but with an AMD Phenom x64).  If I set DA2 to DX9 only, and Medium detail (although I am using the advanced textures patch), it runs smoothly enough (30+FPS) without any problems.
DA:O used to crash all the time, but this was the infamous 'memory leak' issue to do with my AMD chip, and was solved through disabling some chip features. But you have an Intel processor, and I haven't heard of this problem reoccurring on DA2.
The other common reason is graphics card overclocking.  Try taking off ALL overclocking (especially PCI multiplier).  Mine won't accept any overclocking without crashing in DA2 (although in many other games it is fine).  If this works, then you have your answer.  Even if you never had this problem before, it is possible that DA2 is pushing your system harder.
If that doesn't work, it sounds like you may have corrupted one of your driver stacks.  Who knows which one, but it does seem to be graphics related, so start by cleaning all NVIDIA drivers (using a dedicated driver cleaner), and reinstalling the latest released NVIDIA driver in Safe Mode.  If that doesn't work it maybe BIOS related in which case you're best of with a fresh install of W7 (if you have a genuine W7 copy you can also try installing SP2 at this point and see if it clean overwrites any bad driver stacks).
Good luck!

I've been having some interesting problems.  First of all, I managed
to beat the game without any of the following issues manifesting, I had maybe one or two crashes between
release date and yesterday, when I started having problems during my second play through of the game.

Yesterday my game started crashing when I asked a certain party member to torture some information out of a slaver during the "Wayward Son" quest, and I couldn't
get through a conversation without the game crashing.  So I updated the
game to 1.01, downloaded some updates for Vista, and checked to ensure I
was using the latest drivers.  I cannot tell if it was doing this
beforehand, but I started getting an error message for most of the crashes:  "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered".  For other crashes I went to the blue screen restart which also said something about display drivers.

Now the thing that baffles me is why this problem has come up out of the blue after I've put probably over 40 hours into the game already using high graphics and DX 10/11.

Things I've tried:
Simply restarting the computer
Downloading the latest Nvidia Beta Driver
Re-installing the game (tried before and after I reinstalling update 1.01)
Medium graphics and DX 9
Medium graphics, DX 9, and Hi-res texture pack enabled
Reverted to a system restore point sometime after I got DA 2 and before the crashing started (i.e. a date which I knew DA:2 worked) (actually that was a total backfire because the launcher refused to fire until I re-installed the game...again.)
And finally disabling TMM.

And for those efforts the game has mostly stopped CTDing, but the sceen will go black for a few seconds before returning to normal (sometimes this requires me to alt-tab out and back in).  This seems to occur frequently during dialogue, combat, loading screens, or when I'm moving the camera around a lot.  Inevitably one of these "cut to black" will result in a blue screen restart.

So I'm baffled but also greatful that I got to experience the game once before my system stopped running it.  And speaking of system:

System Specs:

Dell XPS 730x
OS: Windows Vista Premium Home Edition 64bit (service pack 2)
Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67 Ghz
6GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT card running the 267.24 driver

Any help or insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Paladinblackguard - unfortunately it sounds like it could be a hardware (graphics memory) problem. Just a hunch. I had this with my 9800 and Empire Total War. Four possibilities I can think of. 1. Your graphics card has become unseated in your computer, 2. Your graphics card is now overheating - has one of your fans failed? - try one time keeping the card cool by leaving the case open, and removing any overclocking, does this solve it? 3. Something else has damaged a file in one of your Windows driver stacks - good luck finding it - I would suggest trying to reinstall Windows. 4. Your graphics card has developed a memory fault - oops - time to upgrade. I'm not a tech expert (disclaimer etc.), but I'm fairly handy with computers and this is what it sounds like to me. Definitely try removing overclocking. Good luck!

Thanks znmex3r1,

I don't have any idea how to disable overclock, everything I search for is details on how to overclock the video card. However I am buying the hardware issue theory, turns out that the issue is effecting every game that I've tried to run.

EDIT: Confirmed as a hardware problem, video card to be specific.

I hate this :

DX11 max settings : weirds artifacts . the game crash ramdomly.
DX11 hight : the game crashes at 5 - 10 min.
DX9 : run fine . sometimes i can play for a half hour without problems. but crash is inevitable.

PC:
Q9650 @4ghz
gtx480 + 8800gt
4gb ram ddr2
2 TB hdd
Win 7 64 bit
drivers ok.

I assume the 8800gt and gtx480 are not in forced SLI (?!).  Does it not work in DX9 with your gtx480 on it's own?  You should be able to use DX11 on very high with the 480, even if you have to install the beta drivers (see this thread: http://social.biowar...0/index/6571278). Have you removed all overclocking and tried once more?  Have you installed Patch 1.01? If you still have problems, then I'm afraid it might have to try a Windows re-install, or wait until a magical fix comes out from Bioware.  Good luck.

Dragon age was working fine for a bit. No problems, everything ran great on ultra.

Yesterday I had to rollback my ATI drivers to 10.8, because of a problem with Total War Shogun 2. Shogun 2 now runs like a charm, but Dragon age 2 now crashes during cutscenes. The screen would freeze, I would still hear the characters talking, screen would go black(and brown once), and then I would have to alt tab out. I would get the windows "programs has stopped working" error as soon as I hit desktop.

I also recently got the 1gb Texture pack from Bioware, but the crashing started after I reinstalled my ATI graphics(which at the time, I never had the texture pack).

My Specs:
Processor: Quad Core 2 Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz
RAM: 4 GB DDR 2
System: Win 7 64 bit
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 5870

Is there no other way to fix this without having to use the latest drivers for ATI? It's Bloody well sophie's choice, I want to play both games(dragon age 2 and Shogun 2), Am I really damned if I do, and damned if I don't???

I have also brought this up with Creative Assembly, the creators of shogun 2.

I only seem to crash whenever I attempt to enter the Hanged Man, I haven't even been in there yet as the game dies during the loading screen I have had no problems with the High setting on DirectX 11 yet and sso I cannot understand why this one area of the game is being so buggy for me. Hopefully they will fix these issues soon though!

I think I've now reached an impasse.. I'm stuck at a part of the main plot in Act 3... after combat I get the cutscene dialog.. it doesn't seem to matter what options I try this time... crashes without fail when trying to return player control :-/ ... guess I need to wait for the patch and play something else instead... hmmm well, Portal 2 is almost out.. maybe I should buy Assassin's Creed Brotherhood in the meantime?

Yep having same crash problems here. I can barely get to the character selection scene (if im lucky).  Shouldnt there be a patch or update soon, from what I read this problem has been going on for over a month.  If any advice I could sure use some help.
