It should be highlighted with a quest market too.

Is it supposed to appear under DLC on the main menu or in your journal in game? I've redeemed my promo code but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I got the other bonus content though but no Black Emporium. I've checked Darktown but I couldn't find any quest marks or anything indicating where it is.

It was never a quest for me. I got a letter about it, but I went there soon after being able to access the Kirkwall map so it was just some dross tossed into the book for me afterwards. That's on the 360, though.

Should it be available through out the game, or does it go away after the deep roads, as I only installed it after I reached the mansion and mother died?

Do you need to import it into you current game, it has a check next to it in downloads, I took it that's enough if it shows up there?

Thanks I thought considering it automatically downloaded the other addons it would do the same for this.

BIoware totally changed the addon installation procedure. You have to download an installation file and run it outside of the game. It took me a while when I first got the game to figure this out. Just one of many not so well thought out changes Bioware made in the game.

You control when it downloads, you can use a download manager, you know how large it's going to be, you decide where to save it, if you reinstall you don't have to d/l and install the DLC a second time, and it's just as easy as an automatic download.

In DAO the download and installation happened automatically as soon as you ran the game. You had to do nothing but wait for it complete.

If you're playing on Xbox, anything you download should be availible offline as long as you're on the same console. If you buy a new console and just transfer all your memory (and DLC), you'll need to transfer the licenses to the new console as well (they explain that process on the Xbox website). So... yes, you can play offline and still acces the BE.Five Seven Five wrote...
Since this thread seems to have taken a turn toward general questions about the BE, I'll see if I can get a question answered. If I am able to find someone willing to let me use their connection, download The Exiled Prince and The Black Emporium, will I be able to access this DLC when I then play from home, offline? Shale was usable offline in Origins, so I should hope the same policy works in DA2, but I have seen a couple of topics with people saying the Black emporium is a no go while not connected to Live. Can anyone confirm this one way or the other?
Thanks, in advance, for any and all clarification.

In DAO, the DLC was also totally malfunctioning for me and a lot of other people. After that ordeal, I'm much more comfortable with manual installation.
