Upon completing the Locks of the Golden Fool sidequest, I returned the item to the elf in Darktown, and when I pressed A to complete the quest, he gave me 250 EXP and some money. But if I continued to Press A without walking away from him, I'd keep receiving the EXP and money reward. I was able to level up this way indefinitely. By the time I decided to stop, I was at Level 16 with 222 Gold Coins.
