Man, I like to think I know how to play this game. I am on the Hard setting. I just cant beat the first (real story) Ogre battle. If I try to focus all on the Ogre we all get swarmed by trash mobs. There are too many to try and clean up one by one. To top it off the potion cool-down is long. One potion and thats it basically. Should I have chosen a heal spell for my mage sister instead of a CC spell??! I cant see any other way to beat this battle.

Giving Bethany a Heal spell is useful. Let Aveline focus on the Ogre while you keep the mobs off Bethany works well. If you are a rogue, I always found being using archery was helpful in that battle.
But most importantly, PROTECT BETHANY!

Also , if you haven't already, change Bethany's behavior to ranged instead of aggressive. That scoot and shoot she does will keep her alive a bit longer.

That is what worked for me as well. What I would add is this. Pause action, of course. Often.
You can have the tank taunt the Ogre a couple times and then just dodge it as much as possible while
everyone else takes on the other npcs. The tank should never get barrel rolled as it is east to move out of.
Another tip: have the tank run around the ogre in circles hitting and moving and it will not hit you almost ever.
Keep the mage running whenever she is getting attacked by more than one, in fact, have her run adds to tank (by now the tank can have a spare taunt saved up. Ionly needed one or two taunts on the ogre then i saved them for the adds that overwhelmed one of my party. If you get in trouble run (kite) until the mage has a heal available. Take any heal off
tactics in order to control it better.
Be prepared after the ogre because next wave is bad and you will not be able to quicksave in time. Just hang on for a minute in that battle and you will get through even though it seems like you won't. Just survive that one as long as you can.

Did this on nightmare without healing, but it required a lot of micro management. Pretty much take down the adds, from weakest to strongest. The Ogre should focus on one person at the start of the fight; use this person to kite it around. If you can get the Ogre to charge or ground slam his hurlock buddies, even better.
When the adds are taken care of watch the Ogre and be ready to quickly move your melee out for his various attacks...a lot.

You keep saying keep Bethany alive.. Uhm, she dies in the cut scene before the ogre. Did I miss something here?
