If those affected can provide some information about your systems, we can hopefully attempt to gauge the types of users being affected and track some of these issues down:
What Model of PS3 are you playing on?
2nd generation (160gb)
Which firmware version are you running? Current
Are you logged into PSN or logged out of PSN? Attepmted Both
Are you logged into the EA servers or logged out of the EA servers? Attempted Both
Which copy of Dragon Age 2 are you running? (Regular edition, Signature Edition) Regular
Playtime before the crash. Roughly 4 hours
As a side note: I can no longer progess as the cut scene that freezes must be run through prior to leaving the area.

Alright, to those affected, are you playing with an import save from Dragon Age: Origins? If so, how many Origins saves are there on your system? We're trying to get an estimate of how many DAO saves people affected might have on their system.
I have three profiles, each has at least 2 saves

So I don't have any DAO saves on my HDD and selected one of the three premade plots in the character selection screen.

I have only froze once, the one and only time the EA log in stayed connected.

It's only been out for a day (in the U.S.). Geez! Give it a little time.

Firstly I would like to say that I love this game. Unfortunately at the moment I cannot progress any further because of this freeze. It happens for me during the quest "enemies among us" when I approach the floating body at the end of the sanctuary. The cutscene's audio goes for about 1 minute but the video freezes and I lose all controller functionality forcing a cold reboot of the system. I did use a save game as the backstory. I have two characters from DAO and Awakening on my system. One character was created in Awakening and one carried over from DAO. I do not remember which one I selected when prompted by DA2.
I have the exact same problem with similar circumstances. I have three characters, two have been in awakening, each has two saves.

Off the top of my head:
I'm playing on a PS3 Slim (120GB).
Latest official Sony firmware.
Regular edition of the Game (With Black Emporium and Mubari hound extra content downloaded).
Playing offline.
Using previous save from DA:O, which has three created characters on it each having 1 save. I have those character's transferred to the Awakening expansion and using my 1 save from the Awakenings expansion pack for my play through in Dragon Age 2. Also have a save for expansion packs: Leliana's Song - 1 save, Darkspawn Chronicles - 1 save, The Golems of Amgarrak - 1 save and Witch Hunt - 1 save.
Played between 7-10 hours roughly.
I hope this helps in sorting this out, very, very soon.

Yes, I imported my character from DA:O that also ran through the Awakening expansion. I have 6 Characters, each with two or three saves each. I also have two save files from the Hurlock Vangaurd DLC

Dragon Age 2 is most assuredly not "shoddy." There are just a few kinks to be worked out.

No, it's shoddy when I bought the game back in december or january, and got it on day 1 release, and all it has managed to do is freeze my system. I've been unable to get past the character select screen.
Let me rephrase: this is shoddy dev work, or clearly not dev'd on the PS3. My PC version works fine (yes I have bought TWO COPIES just like with ME1, ME2, DA:O, and every other bioware game.
I'm a long, long time bioware mega-fan but this is just plain horrible work. I was shipped a non-working signature edition which I cannot even use beyond the starting menu. I call that shoddy. It's fun on the PC, but for the PS3.. well there is no excuse to release a game with game-breaking glitches like this around every corner for a CONSOLE. Never have I played a game this generation with so many issues getting it to even *start* - and I've invested about 8+ hours into getting it to work. This is beyond Fallout buggy.
And that's leaving out the fact that apparently all the cool "DLC" I got was already ON THE FRIGGIN DISK. Nice cash-in, EA.

I have an 80GB PS3 first gen
I also encountered a similar freeze when talking to the magical prostitute in the blooming rose earlier in the quest but was able to bypass it by choosing different dialog options.
