So I'm currently four hours into the game right now and it froze on me. Nothing really bad there as I always quick save so very little progress should've been lost. I end up restarting my computer shortly afterwards, I start up DA2 again, and....................it has no loads.
What data that I had saved the game does not seem to recognize. This did not happen before the last time the game crashed but I didn't restart my computer last time. I looked to the folder where the character data is stored, I see that my character files are there, and yet the game does not seem to recognize them. When I start up the game the Load Game option is greyed out. I tried restarting the game, my computer, nothing. I made a second character, saved, and I'm able to load the data from that save but when I try to do something like Switch Character, the game is pretty much drawing a blank when it comes to my first character.
Despite possibly losing four hours the game is still fun and I don't mind replaying the four hours with my second character if it comes to it but I'm a little worried that this problem may happen again so I would like to ask if this has happened to anyone and if you have a fix for it? Once I don't mind but if the same thing happens again where I've gotten more then four hours into the game, it will be a bit of an inconvenience.

I'm having a similar problem. I cannot save or load anything. Quick saves don't save either. When pressing Esc to bring up the menu of system options, I see "Save Game" and "Load Game" both greyed out. Also seeing the autosave graphic constantly as I play.
Oddly enough, it did store the character information (appearance) for my Hawke, but nothing else.

Are you on single-core machines? If so, we have other reports on file of single-core machines not saving properly.

]I dont believe the problem has anything to do with any particular Processor per-se, I have a .....
Processor: Intel® Core i7 CPU X 980 @ 3.33GHz, ~3.4GHz
And my Load and Save feature remains grayed out. I am unable to save or load my game, f-5 or f-9 arent working also. I believe most of us (PC USers) , if not all, are stuck awaiting a fix.

My processor has multiple cores so I don't believe that's the problem. I tried deleting and then replacing the saved files of my first character as that was the only thing I could think of doing but that didn't fix anything. Right now I'm playing with my second mage character, got farther then my first character, I am able to save and load games, but I'm still afraid of a repeat.

I had the same problem earlier. The game froze, so I exited, restarted and went to load my last save. Was able to save and load new games just fine, but my last character's save data wasn't showing, even though the save files were still on my machine.
Turned out that one of the saves was missing some files: CharacterName.jpg, CharacterName_Story.xml, and screen.dds. I just deleted that save entirely and restarted the game. Load option came up normally and I was able to play again.
I found the saves in C:\\Users\\USERNAME\\Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age 2\\Characters\\CharacterNameThatWontLoad\\Saves
Hope that helps!

I have had the same issue. I was in Act 3, near the end of the game after beating the High-Dragon, and I can no longer load that game. I have a Quad-core processor, so.
