My issue is not FPS, I am running on high and getting the right amount of fps as I should.

The problem is that my game freezes randomly (like pausing battle via the spacebar) but the sound keeps on...sounding. Heh.

2.5 quad
gtx geforce 465 D11
8gb of ram

Again, not an fps issue, just the random freezing.

That had crossed my mind, but I found it strange that the machine would freeze before the fan got turned up.  I'll look into something to turn my fan speed up, and also something to let me monitor my GPU temperature in-game. Thanks.

Yeah, that's what usually happens if I neglect my GPU's heat. Keep in mind that if you manually control fan speed, it will never auto-fan. So you'll always want to keep that in the back of your mind before you start gaming. You can always turn auto-fan on again, of course. Basically, whenever my GPU's overheat, it will halve the clock speeds (usually), so what happens is you'll get artifacting or freezing, or the game will simply quit. Then the fans will whine. Sometimes it will crash the drivers and not allow you to return to normal clock speeds, making games chug along at half the speed, requiring a restart.

I'm not saying your issue is 100% an overheating issue, but that's what it really sounds like to me. I can't think of anything else that could be causing it except for a driver conflict (which is doubtful).

Well, I set up a fan profile that had the fans at 75% any time it went over 55 C, and I managed to play for several hours just fine.  I also enabled the GPU temperature overlay from MSI Afterburner and monitored it as I played.  I thought I was in the clear, but it finally happened again just a few moments ago.  I happened to glance at the monitor a few moments before the freeze, and it was sitting at 56C, so I'm puzzled. :\\

Game is absolutely unplayable on very high settings (high res pack), fps in the low teens. On high settings I am in the mid 30s..... playable, but definitely not super smooth. It really is unacceptable and I hope that patching this is a very high priority item. On a side note, I actually have 3 of those 30 inch monitors, nv surround is not playable at all, even with high settings.

The above is with SSAO off btw. It seems to give me a 5-10 fps hit on high settings.. not sure if that's normal. Also SLI GPU utilization isn't great ~50 percent.

Edit: All of the above is with the latest beta drivers.

I've updated my Radeon 5870 drivers to beta, tried every possible combination of settings and the game still randomly crashes... i don't know what else to do. sometimes I can play for 3 hours, and sometimes for only 3 minutes.

Come on people, this is a thread for people like us who are having issues with DA2 in DX11 to REPORT their issues, not for discussion or posts to tell others how good their game runs on their rig. Also for those who haven't yet installed the beta driver, please do so before reporting. All the chatter and posts here are kinda ruining the purpose of having a summarized thread.

I have been playing since I could activate it (almost 7 hours now!)

Game runs smoothly here, no problems what so ever, even though I was a bit skeptical after reading about all problems many other users have. The demo was almost unplayable for me, so the only real difference from the demo release until now is the new 267.24 drivers.

I also turned off the VSync and lowered the graphics from "very high" to "high".

I know this is a temp solution, but for those of you with similar HW, the game is most def playable without ruining anything at all.

1920x1080
Graphics Detail High
AA 4x
High-Res Textures Enabled
Renderer DX11
VSync OFF

All settings in NVIDIA control panel are DEFAULT.

8GB DDR3 1333 RAM
Win7 Ultimate SP1 x64
MSI 570GTX running with 267.24 drivers

What does Vertical Sync do?  I'll try turning it off to see if it makes a difference. can't believe there are so many bugs on release... this is horrible and my faith in Bioware is quickly fading.

 Xeon X3220 @ 3GHz
8GB DDR3 1333MHz
GTX 470 (Driver: BETA 267.24)
1920x1200 resolution
Win 7 Ultimate x64

With the maximum settings and high-res texture pack I'm seeing 16 - 22 fps with my setup.

I've also noticed that the character animations are choppy, but become normal while holding down the right mouse button. They only seem to be choppy while getting low fps, and smooth out as the fps gets closer to 30.

For example, with a frame rate of 16, moving forward by only pressing 'W' or right-clicking in the world results in a choppy running animation, but holding down the right mouse button while pressing 'W' results in a smooth running animation. However if the frame rate is ~24+ there is little to no discernable difference between the aforementioned methods.

I also tried the (alpha) 270.32 driver, which resulted in no performance difference, but caused the game to randomly freeze and need to be exited using task manager. A clean re-install of 267.24 fixed the freezing issue.

By disabling SSAO and DOF I can get around 24 fps, or by enabling SSAO and using "High" instead of "Very High" I get over 30 fps. It's really too bad, because the game looks pretty good at the highest settings... if only it didn't perform so poorly.

Dx11 is playable, however it crashes often. I am using the beta drivers for nvidia 267.31 and they made the game playable. On the current certified nvidia driver Dx11 was Unplayable, it would run terrible and I would get terrible black graphical errors on the screen almost like black screen tearing. I hope Bioware is in contact with Nvidia to get this issue resolved and release a new certified patch so that people with good computers can enjoy this game with max settings.

Hey all, I just read someone's post on another forum that was able to get his game working smooth enough in DX11 mode, and it works reasonably well for me in it as well.

What you do is go to My Documents>Bioware>Dragon Age 2>Settings and open the DragonAge.ini file.

Then change

UseTrilinearFiltering=0
UseTripleBuffering=0

to

UseTrilinearFiltering=1
UseTripleBuffering=1

I can actually play the game without much stutter. Granted, it still does more stutter than DX9, but it's better for those itching to play in DX11.

Im running the game on High and the game runs perfectly fine the problem is that after a couple of minutes playing it it starts to freeze.
Something is wrong with DX11 Nvidia Drivers or game problem one or the other
BTW i have latest drivers and the beta version as well same thing happens

I have no problems running any game at 1920 x 1080 resolution getting an average of over 30 FPS on Metro 2033 using max settings however with DA2 I'm dropping down to 7-8 FPS under Direct X 11 settings

I haven't tried lowering the settings yet, however from the demo I had the same issues so was able to play on a lower settings. However I find it very disappointing that I will not be able to play on DX11 settings, especially as we were told that this was a problem with the demo only and was fixed in the main game....

...unless Bioware is trying to compete with Metro 2033 for the most graphically intensive game around!!!

I have tried installing & updating drivers as mentioned in the original post in this thread.

just to quote myself...if I turn down to directX 9 I am getting 180+ FPS ....fix directX 11 settings please, I can provide a dump file if requested....

I have:

Core i7 860 @ 3.2 GHz
8GB DDR3
GeForce GTX 570 with the March 1st beta drivers
Windows 7 SP1 x64

When I use the 'High'-setting with 4xAA and 16xAF at 1080p the game runs very smoothly most of the time. Enabling SSAO significantly hurts the performance, and if I enable the 'Very high'-setting it makes the game run like crap no matter which other settings I turn on or off.

Specs:
Core i7 920 @ 4.2 GHZ (overclocked).
6 GB Ram in triple channel mode.
GTX 480 with latest drivers, as well as overclocking.
Win 7 x64 SP1

Alright, so as I have yet to see a viable solution for this, I am posting in hopes that someone can direct me to some help. My problem is pretty simple. When I adjust my video settings to "very high", I get black box textures all over the terrain, as well as parts of the characters, and it looks terrible.

The FPS is fine, no matter what settings I use (I get some minor lag at full AA's), and checking my vid card temps and load, it doesn't seem to be breaking a sweat (load never passes 80, temp. never passes 85C).

On another note, my other overclockings (CPU and RAM) are completely stable, and have been so for over a year.

Clearly my system can handle this, and more, but I'm missing a link somewhere. Ideas?

I am about to install the Hi Res Textures pack. Will update then if I see changes.

Bioware needs to get on this ASAP. I have been experimenting with different Beta Drivers for Nvdias 580. All of them now result in a Freeze, weird artifacting glitches and a ctd or complete system lock.
This is really annoying. I have reverted back to a clean install of the last certified drivers and not only do I get a massive FPS drop in outdoor locals I get a massive black texture frack up whenever I look a certain way. Either something is horribly wrong with the DX11 code, or nvdia needs to get some new stable drivers out now. Anyone one else getting these artifacting ctds on the 580?

Specs:
Core2Duo E8400 @ 3.37Ghz
6 GB ram
GTX 580 with latest beta drivers (March2), no OC
Win 7 x64 Home Premium
Using DXOverrider to make sure triple buffer gets activated anytime I use vSynch

DX9: AAx8, AF(?? - can't set it in medium setting) 60fps everywhere, everytime -- can't be smoother

DX10: AAx4, AFx16 Everything activated and maxed.  45-60fps everywhere -- very smooth and much better looking than DX9. Still can show some slowdown (not as noticeable as when I'm running DX11)

DX11: AAx2, AFx16 - all except Depth of Field. 25-60fps -- I average 25-40fps running around in Kirkwall, with jumps up to 50-60 at times. Headache inducing however. When it comes down to 30 or below, it does show and gets annoying after a while (might go below 25 for a very show period as well).

DX11: I noticed bugs that seem to show up in DX11 but not on other renderers... Like dog stops following you, quests indicator on NPC doesn't get refreshed, etc. It **might** be related to the time played without restarting the game though (and not the renderer) -- but yesterday I played 5 hours straight on DX10 without any of those issues showing up.

Other: I don't have the black textures bug anymore (had it once in the Demo, but for some reason, it never reappeared -- didn't do anything special to fix it back then either.).

Other2: Game *never* crashed once on any renderers so I'm happy about that :).

Can't think of anything else atm. Good luck to us all (Bioware, fans)

Cheers

as stated above i noticed the exact same choppyness while moving, but when i hold the R Mouse button down its smooth.
(framerate does not seem to drop at all, its a weird choppyness perhaps extremely rapid changes in fps that i'm not seeing with MSI afterburner i'm not sure)

Running it in dx11 mode with everything on except for SSAO, tweaking settings does not seem to change anything regarding this issue until im getting over 50fps at that point its not very noticeable.
Vid card is a nvidia gtx480 (beta drivers installed)

You can read about VSync here;
http://www.tweakguid...Graphics_9.html

It's common knowledge that VSync is a brutal fps-hog, so you'll just have to try and see the difference for yourself. I usually have VSync enabled in games, but since the latest driver is not optimized for DA2, it's better to leave it off for better performance.

Hopefully there will be a new driver soon, this is all temporary after all :)

***SOLUTION***

The high resolution textures pack, aside from making massive improvements to the quality of most of the textures themselves (very evident), also fixed my problem with the black box rendering.

Now here is a key point. When I clicked the box "High Quality Blur" I saw a slight drop in performance, but a huge increase in the quality of the shaders, completely eliminating any blackboxing to the naked eye. I currently am running on Very High quality, high resolution textures, and high quality blur, with almost 0 video lag (there are occasional stutters that are barely perceptible, only to a trained enthusiast's eye). I am not using diffusion depth of field.

I believe any additional issues will be solved with patches and driver updates from Nvidia.

DX11 at High detail, with 8xAA and 16x filtering, and HD texture pack runs 'OK' with a few stutters. This was after trying DX11 with 'Very High' detail and having my rig throw a fit - stutters, low framerate and black boxes all over the place.

Pretty sure my computer can do better than 'High'...

The 267.26 nVidia drivers somehow work better than the 267.24, despite the difference claimed to be only the support of 5XX series cards in the 26th. To install it on lower model cards, edit the INF file to include the [Manufacturer] section from the 24th version instead of the one it originally has. Seems to have eliminated the in-dialogue slowdowns for me entirely (I'd say it's about 30-ish FPS, more than enough for me), and cut down the in-combat slowdowns to small jitters -- running 1920x1200 at High with the high-res textures. As a reminder, my video card is a GeForce GTS 250.

I got the same video card as you and it does work! Thanks a lot man!

VSync does not "hog" fps >_> It caps it so that it won't get higher than your screen's refresh rate. It's pointless to let your computer pump out more frames per second than your screen can handle anyway and in some cases it can actually smooth out the game. FPS and performance isn't the same at all when talking Vsync
