Tessellation is big differentiator between Dx9 and Dx11 from what I can see.
And tessellation is a huge FPS drop, and this is consistent outside of DA2 as well.
If you don't have super dx11 rig, expect sub par performance.
Though in theory Dx11 with high quality settings [not very high quality] and large textures should run smoother than Dx9 if Bioware took advantage of the threading available.

The game still looks fantastic on high and runs at a min 40 to 61 max fps. It bugs me that it's constantly jumping around though.
Bioware, is there a way to set max fps. I would set it to 40 for myself. I'm also going to see what this game looks like in 720p. That might help a lot. I just hope that the official 11.4 driver from AMD works better than the beta.
Make sure you have triple buffering on in your driver panel since you have Vsync on.
I tried this out last night and it helped stabalize the framerate. Before it was jumping around from 40-60, not it's around 54-60 on average. Still jumpy, but alot better. I turned off fraps and am now focused on the game instead of worrying about settings. Thanks again for the tip Xiper!

PCGH benchmarked DA2. Looks like AMD cards are the way to go with this game. Personally I can say the game works playably with a 6970 using 6016x1080 resolution Eyefinity on Very High quality. I do have to leave SSAO and blur off and AA too, but the fps is 30-40 which is enough for the game.
The problem with Eyefinity I have is that with bezel compensation the toolbar at the bottom is located smack dab right at the bezel so some of the skills get covered by them. Seriously, did QA not see this happening? These GUI issues with Eyefinity happen far too often in games given how little effort it needs to fix them.
On other news I just have to express my distaste for unequal optimizations that developers and Nvidia/AMD engage in. It just feels like the company that doesn't sponsor a title will always get sub par performance and support. I suppose this kind of DX11 implementation (AMD/Nvidia supported) is cheap for developers, but it just stinks when in every other game the DX11 performance is sub par for one of the manufacturer's cards.

FYI triple buffering setting in the gpu control panel is for OpenGL, so it has no effect for DX games. For DX there's a "pre-rendered frames" setting that's similar.

Why does not it work? Amd and bioware developed some graphical features together.

Over the past 18-24 months or so, particularly, nVIDIA drivers have been extremely variable from one release to the next, and updating would frequently "break" many games for that driver and card combination. Companies like Bioware try to keep both big graphcs outfits in the loop, and do send out samples of what each new game is going to be like. This time, AMD stayed on top somewhat better. AMD has been less variable & more dependable, at least that's they impression the last 2-3 years. Not to say that they have not made slip-ups of their own, because they have.markshim wrote...

EVGA GTX470 sc
E8400 @ 3ghz (standard clock)
4gb OCZ DDR2 @ 1000mhz
Syncmaster 226bw @ 1680x1050
Settings:
DX 11 @ Very High
high rez textures: on
AF: 4x
AA: 2x
Vsync: on
DOF: off
SSAO: off
Motion Blur: off
Drivers tested:
* 260.99 -> simply unplayable + black artifacts everywhere
FPS: max 10 fps in early game combat, 10-25 fps in action-cutscenes with a lot of hitching
* 267.24 -> a little better and no more black artifacts (as far as I could see), but still subpar performance
FPS: 22-28 fps in early game combat, 25-40 fps in action-cutscenes without hitching
Conclusion: the beta drivers do provide some improvement, but it's still far short of what the performance should be, given my hardware, the settings (I don't have ANY of the special DX11-only effects enabled, I'm running low AA and I'm playing on a medium resolution) and the graphical quality of the game (which, let's be honest, is 'ok' at best).

No i have an ATI card HD4600 series with a quad core PC etc, really fast and yet i carnt run grpahics in the highest settings due to major lag. all i can say is run the game in DX9 its just a good apart from the shadows which seem a bit pixelated, but apart from that the game runs how it should.
Just an FYI, a 4600 series card isn't all that fast, it's more of a medium-range cheap gaming card at best. DX10 lighting and shadows (which is the main thing enabled when you switch to DX11 mode on a non-DX11 compatible card like yours) are very gpu-intensive and can tax even a higher end gaming card, so it's not surprising you'd see performance issues with just a 4600. Having a quad core or lots of memory unfortunately won't help much if your graphics card is a lower range.

System Specs:
Phenom X2 550 Unlocked to 4 cores @ 3.2Ghz
4gb of ram
HD Radeon 5750 1gB
DA:2 Config
1920x1200
Very High
Vertical Sync On
Hi Resolution Textures
AA 8x
AF 16x
Running 11.4 Catalyst Beta
Features
Dx11 enabled
Occlusion Off
Diffusion Field of View Off
High Quality Blur On
This is runnable to some degree, it will die as soon as my screen is flooded with people, but for now while I explore a rather simple cavern, it can pull just under 30fps.
As soon as I crossfire this weekend, this should be more doable. I can reduce here and there to make my experience more enjoyable.
There is 1 feature that causes graphical glitches consistently, that is Occlusion.
There is 1 feature that I feel makes the game look pasty/ugly that is Diffusion Field of View.
I don't feel that one is programmed correctly. When enabled, my characters appear to be flattened and become more sprite looking. That and makes the hi resolution texture look extremely low resolution all of a sudden.
I have also found that both of these 2 features are extremely resource heavy, I honestly see no reason to turn them on.
Very high settings for tessellation is note worthy, I think you will see a difference here with it enabled while you play the game. It is not necessary for high resolution textures to be enabled for this to work, it just works better with it on.
Game will run fantastic with high resolution textures turned off, occlusion off, and diffusion FOV off and Very High Quality setting enabled.
I will probably need to dial back my AA and AF a bit, but it definitely helped with showcasing the graphical goodies available

Core i7 920 @ 3.8GHz, 6GB DDR3 RAM, HD5770 CrossfireX, Asus P6T mobo, 1TB Caviar Black HDD.
DirectX 11 version results in the menus being unusable - the game loads as normal, but when you hit the main menu, you cannot click on anything. The mouse pointer is moving, and will click normally outside of DA2 and when loaded in DX9 mode.
In short, it doesn't register that I have clicked the mouse! I have updated CCC drivers to 11.4, and it made no difference.

Specs
Gigabyte H67 MB
Intel i5 2400
12GB DDR3
Palit GTX 460 1GB GDDR5 OC'd to 800mhz core and 2000 mhz shader
Nvidia Forceware 267.24 beta drivers
High-res texturpack installed
With the Forceware 266 drivers installed and all settings maxed (Very High / 8X AA / 16X AF / all boxes checked) I was getting 8-10 FPS consistantly in DX11
After installing the 267.24 beta drives FPS went up about 10-12 fps to 18-20 fps.
In order to get the game to run smoothly (avg 30 - 50 fps) I had to change to the following settings:
High Graphics,
4xAA
4xAF
No Occlusion
No HQ Motion Blur
No Diffusion FoV
Even though I checked to ensure that the DA2 game profile setting in the Nvidia control panel are all at default I will run through the checklist on the first page and report back tonight

AMD Phenom II X2 550
Win7 32 bit
4 gigs RAM
Just an update to my earlier post. With the settings on DX9 and graphics cranked down to their lowest possible setting, the game works smooth as silk, though it's pretty ugly. Anything higher than the minimum crashes to desktop.

I run Win7 32 Home Premium
AMD Phenom ll X4 3.0 GHz
4GB RAM(nothing special about it)
nVidia 250 GTS with 3D drivers
Asus VG236 120hrz monitor
To get the game into DX11 without the empty drive error, I start in 9 then switch it after the game is running.. I'm pretty sure this works because my display is much brighter than it is in DX9.
The one crash I had was caused because my character may have been pushed through a wall during a fight. He was taking a lot of hits with knock back and was stuck in a corner.

I probably should've given that part a comment all to itself, but according to someone on nVIDIA's forum, AMD Radeons were given some major advantage as part of the game's development?Gorath Alpha wrote...

Have you tried upgrading to the latest beta drivers? Doing so seems to have at least fixed the horrible black glitching problem. Also I've heard some good things about the special 267.31 drivers for the GTX580's.
