I'm running DAO2 in Dx11 mode (included High Res patch), with everything maxed out except I don't use Anti-Aliasing. After a while the game comes to a stand still. This could be while I'm running around the world or while I'm in dialog mode. The quick way around this problem is to switch to desktop and then switch back to the game....the game is running fast again, the problem with this solution is that sometimes when I'm dialog mode I miss what other NPCs are saying to me.

My Spec:

Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M6400, T9550 Core 2 duo, 8GB of RAM, nVidia Quadro FX3700M video card (1GB of ram). Windows 7 Pro 64bit edition with SP1 and latest nVidia official driver (266.58 WHQ, no beta available), I'm using 1920 x 1200 resolution, Aniso Filtering 16x.

The game runs fast for me, and the freezing has nothing to do with disable enabling various graphics features on like, High Res, Anisotropic Filtering, graphics level detail etc. The game freezes even if using minimum graphics seetings. The problem is the Dx11 mode...

After installing the nVidia 270.32 alpha driver, DX11 mode runs significantly better on my system. Using the latest Beta drivers I got sometimes lag and stuttering, mostly during conversations, this is completely gone now. Framerate has also slightly improved.
Might be worth a shot for those that also have serious trouble and don't have the patience to wait until these drivers reach Beta or even WHQL status.

While it's a lame fix (for now), anyone having major DX11 issues - try it in a window and report in if that did anything. There are some pretty stunning changes for some people.

I run on a GTX460 and I've got the latest beta patch. The game runs fine on DX11 with high res textures, high settings (not very high), no Anisotropic filtering, no diffusion DoF and no high quality blur. It looks great, but I do wish that I could max it out.

Pre-beta driver and this thing wasn't even remotely playable.

I seemed to have fixed my freezing, though it wasn't pretty. This may help for people with low framerates as well.

I downloaded the beta 267.26 driver, which is only supposed to be meant for the GTX 560 Ti, and modified the .inf file to work with my 260M, and surprise, surprise, I am able to run the game on everything as high as I can go on DX10, except without SSAO, and it runs without freezing anymore at a stable framerate. Previously was running the 267.24 beta driver.

Your mileage may vary, but NVIDIA really shouldn't device lock their drivers.

I did the same thing and it also worked for me, getting a stable relatively smooth framerate (before modding the driver got like 8 fps and freezes all the time, freaking game was killing me), still the drop in performance of dx10/11 in comparison to dx9 is unacceptable....

Ok well this is odd I don't know if this will work for everyone but I got rid of the shadows running DX11! All I did was drop my AA down from 8x to 4x IN GAME not in the launcher and I applied the change and now my FPS is over 60fps steady walking around, goes down to about 50fps during combat and the shadows are GONE! I hope this helps any one else with this issue!

Now that is very interesting. With DX10 (High) 2x AA, 16x AF fullscreen at a 1920x1080 resolution, I had maybe around 30FPS when exploring, going as low as 22 FPS during fights. For some reason even when it was 30+ FPS the game seemed laggy - not input lag, but when you were running if you looked at the background it was almost choppy as if you were running too fast for the background to be processed.

Switching to windowed mode and a 1600x900 resolutuion made me get around 40+ FPS normally, at least 30FPS during fights, and... it wasn't laggy or choppy at all.

Thanks for the suggestion :) I am actually going to continue playing using DX9 at 1920x1080 as there is very little noticeable improvement with just using DX10 over DX9 - but it may certainly help others.

System: Core i7 930 @ 2.93 GHz, GeForce GTX 260 968MB overclocked (700MHz GPU Clock/1509MHz Shader/1000MHz Memory) @ 1920x1080 resolution, 6GB DDR3 Triple Channel RAM (1600MHz) - Windows 7 64bit.

The shadows? what are you referring to exactly? The cloud shadows on the ground?

Because Dx10 and Dx11 share the same Renderer in this game.

That's because DX10 is not officially supported (because it's crap). If you have a DX10 OS/Windows Vista machine, then setting it to DX11 will use DX10 as I understand it.

DirectX 11 render is for both DirectX10 and Directx 11. There is no independent render for 10, but it is officially supported.

So, has anyone tried turning off Aero in Win7 and used the Basic theme instead? It fixed a few artefacting issues for me, only thing that remains is the stuttering pace.

No about a quater of the upper left hand side screen would go crazy with shadows while in combat for some reason and it seems to only happen with DX11. Here is a vid

Dear Mr Priestly,

About a week ago I read the following post from you.

"High Resolution Texture Pack for the PC version of Dragon Age II

This will add the option to enable higher detail replacements for most textures in game. A big difference will be noticed on level art especially.

Requirements:
Using high-resolution textures requires a graphics card with at least 1024MB video memory.
Most of the benefits from the Hi-resolution textures will only be seen if you are able to run the game in DirectX 11.

To manually download your new content on the PC:

   1. Download the installer from the link below and run it.
   2. Run Dragon Age II.
   3. Open the Options menu.
   4. Select Video options.
   5. Check the "Hi-resolution textures" checkbox.

Note: In order to enable the "Very High" setting you will need a video card that supports DX11 and the latest drivers.

Hi-Res Texture Pack"

You claimed  that "A big difference will be noticed on level art especially."

I would just like to say I noticed a big difference alright! And on many levels..... such as, frame rate, game stability graphic quality and all for the worse.

I find that surprising, since I more than meet all the requirements listed in your post! Can you please explain this?

Could you also give me an update about when the issues I am experiencing with this software will be resolved to my satisfaction? I have paid the full retail price for your software and find I am not able to use it as you describe it. This in my opinion would warrant some detailed explanation and at the very least the updating of this thread and/or similar information sources with the alacrity that comes of some semblance of customer service.

I thank you in advance for your speedy reply.

PS

In the spirit of this thread I detail my system specifications to help you on your way to resolving the matter sooner.

Q9650 quad core @3GHz
GTX 570
8GB DDR2 Cruical Balistix Tracer
Asus P5QC motherboard

The game seems to use all four nuclei but loads one of them much higher than the rest. The GPU seems not taxed at all and indeed runs at half steam.

Just my 2 cents, but I was SO JAZZED about DA2 getting DirectX11... and I've been horribly disappointed. The BIGGEST innovation with DirectX11 is tessellation, and IMO, it's barely used in this engine... faces (jawlines, foreheads, etc) still have sharp edges to the shape. I guess it's my own fault for having expected Metro 2033-type DirectX 11 in my Dragon Age engine. Hopefully, Dragon Age 3's engine will be built from scratch with better tessellation and 3D Vision support. Still... gameplay and story matters more, and I'm having a great time!

Amd is much slower with tesselation(although 6970 is rather good at it, but still slower than gtx 570/580), game was developed with amd. No wonder that they didn't make it slow for their cards.

Also, I don't get it why do they need this ssao. There is almost no dynamic lighting, looks of buildings, terrain etc are just precalculated. Why do we need to calculate AO in realtime than?

I guess the reason I asked the question in my earlier post is because I see alot of posts onthis forum saying they are using DX-10..... How can you use DX-10 when there is no choice for DX10?

@Vania Z is saying things that go back to my post of a few pages ago.

I've done some looking, and I CAN see dynamic cloud-to-ground lighting, and _somewhat_ better shadowing and lighting... but not nearly enough to sacrifice frame rate for it. (Still running in DX9 with a great frame rate).

WorLord It is shadows, not lighting:) Well, there are some dynamic lighting, fireballs I presume, but I have not really bothered to look if they do produce light.
Also, it is funny to see that fireball explosion is 2D sprite image:D When you rotate camera it is following your view.

Ok I thought I would give the DX10 (high) a run. It loads fine just to the menu but then my mouse buttons become disabled. I can still move around with the mouse but can't click anything.

OS: Win7 64bit pro
CPU: AMD 965 3.4ghz quad
Ram: 8gb ddr2
HDD: 3TB
Video: 2 MSI Nvidia 285gtx with 1gb ddr3 ram each, running in sli.
Video Drivers: 266.58 (most current non beta)

It should be noted that I use DX10 on an older game, World in Conflict, and it works just fine.

I had many freezes and crashes the first 6 hours playing the game but after downloading the ATI drives linked on this page everything seems to be working fine now.
