Found out something interesting: once you use Dx11 it cripples your config, leaving you with decreased performance and very jumpy FPS even after going back to Dx9.
After several hours of investigation I found the error: in
DocumentsBioWareDragon Age 2SettingsDragonAge.ini there is a line
GraphicsDetailLevel=x.

After a fresh installation (or after deleting the entire [VideoOptions] section in the ini file) this line reads GraphicsDetailLevel=2 if you go for Dx9 / Medium. Using Dx11 (Medium/High) and then going back to Dx9 / Medium changes the line to GraphicsDetailLevel=1. Changing to Low/Medium does nothing to solve it. You must manually edit the line to "2" and voilá, FPS is steady again.

In my case, I'm running steady 60fps after loading a certain savegame in Dx9 / Medium.

Going Dx11 and back gives me jumpy fps from 24-51fps in the exact same spot.

Going Dx11 also introduced my to the temporary 0fps game-freezes (see http://social.biowar...index/6446649/9) and remained a problem even after going back to Dx9 which suggets that the problems are linked.

Using inf-modified nVidia 267.26 / 270.32 drivers fixed the freezes but not the jumpy fps for me.

Hope this may help :)

Gear: Intel Quad Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz, 4 GB RAM, nVidia GTX 280, Windows 7 Professional 64bit
Game settings: Dx9 / Medium, 1920x1080, AA 4x, Full screen, Vsync on, HighRes texture pack on, all other options disabled.

[edited for formatting]

I also found out that if you edit the in game settings vs the launcher the settings actually change. When I went to 4x AA to fix my shadow issue in game it worked in the launcher it didn't, so there is somthing screwy with the launcher.

Hey Kayden SiNafey my system
is near identicle to yours except I have a single vanilla GTX 580......
I am using the DX9 settingd because of the iritating occasional game
freeze........ Are you still getting game freezes? And if not what
settings do you recomend for me use get the best possible experience out
of the game both visually and playwise? Thanks in advance for your
advice!! BTW my monitor defaults at 1920x1200 and thats the resolution I
like to use on all my games.

I would think running the game with DX9 with Very High, 2xAA 8x AF and everything else turned on would give you the best performace for what you got. Make sure you change it in the game though like I said b4 the launcher isn't doing what it should and I hope the patch fixes it.

EDIT: This problem could also be causing the freezes and crashes. In my experience I have had only one happen in Chapter 3. If anyone else changes their settings in game and notice a positive change in the freezing and crashes post it here so we can help narrow this down.

Just as a heads up, I'm having very positive experiences with the new 267.59 version drivers released for the GTX550 ti.

I run a single GTX470 oc and I went from 18-22 fps (beta v267.24) to 38-44 fps (beta v267.59) on DX11 + Very High with the same settings and in the same area.

These drivers are WHQL, but meant for a different card, so they require a modded inf file to install and there might be problems with them, so only use them if you know what you're doing. They certainly seem to be worth a shot. :)

Good find.  Too bad the newer AMD cards are so long, otherwise I may have considered amd for my upgraded card.

I've seen games favour one video card over another, but never so heavily and apparent as this.

One thing I changed on my nVidia card was power usage in the dragon age 2 profile (nVidia control panel).  I changed it from adaptive to performance.  Maybe this is what people are seeing with less than 80% GPU usage?  I haven't had a lot of time for playing and testing my card though, so maybe those people already running tests can give this a spin and see if they see an increase in GPU usage (although I'm sure they've already played with the setting).

I don't know how to get the info on my system, but the game crashes immediately from loading after about 20 hours of play. I'm in act two storming the keep. The most I've gotten was about 10 seconds after loading before the sound repeats and loops, I get a black screen, crashes, and the video card restarts.

Just wanted to confirm that these drivers also dramatically improved my DA2 experience.

Even on my GTX 260 I can now play DA2 smoothly with 30+ FPS (even during fights!) at 1920x1080 with 2x AA and 16xAF using the DX10 "High" mode - also, no more lag that was present with the 267.26 drivers!

Also, the 267.59 drivers are not beta drivers - they're signed/WHQL approved, however just for the 550 Ti/GTS 450 and due to the INI mod needed to get this running it warns you that they are not signed (despite the fact that they are).

System: Core i7 930 @ 2.93 GHz, GeForce GTX 260 896MB overclocked (700MHz GPU Clock/1509MHz Shader/1000MHz Memory) @ 1920x1080 resolution, 6GB DDR3 Triple Channel RAM (1600MHz) - Windows 7 64bit.

Looked at the modded inf file for 267.59 and it doesn't include the 560ti. I wonder why that is, especially sine the 267.26 were specifically for that model, as opposed to the .24 for everything else.

Hehe doh, you're right ofcourse. Amended. :)

Also since these drivers are already WHQL and ManuelG on the Nvidia forums said they'd release drivers with better DA2 performance soon, I'd hesitantly conclude from this that we might not have to wait much longer for WHQL version drivers for all cards with similar or better performance boost to these .59 ones. :)

No idea why, but honestly I do not care - they work very well for DA2 on my GTX260, and it should only be better when I get my GTX460 and overclock that too ;)

Did I not mention that I was looking at the modded file?

Sorry, I'm tired.

More than likely whoever made the moddified 267.59 INI copy/pasted from the 267.24 INI which (obviously) does not include the 267.26 cards.

Edit: If you need a 267.59 INI with the 560 Ti included, the 267.59 INI I made for the International 64bit version of the driver has it (if you need it for 32bit, you'll need to find one/make your own).

That sounds suspiciously like a sound card issue, not a video card issue.

Can you tell us:
-operating system (windows7/xp/other)
-sound card in computer (and brand if you know)

This worked awesome!!!

SLI GPU usage now look TONS better with both cards averaging 90-93% usage.

The 267.24 drivers were getting me 60%/80% splits

I was able to use the following settings:

DX11 / Very High / 4xAA / 16xAF / All Checkboxes checked except Distance Blur / 1600x1050 Resolution

On this Hardware:
i5 2400 / GTX 460 SLI / 12GB DDR3 / 22" Widescreen

This then nets me fps that rarely dips below 40 and usually stays above 45.  It will even max out at 60 depending what I'm looking at.

I'm so stoked - maybe I can finally start playing!!!

Thanks for your response...... One question though ....When I check DX9 the menu only offers medium settings... How do I  choose DX9 with Very High Settings?

Thanks for your help!

Well I was using my exp with the demo cause DX11 like garbage on it and I could run high with dx9. Somthing must have changed from demo to release, maybe thats the "fix" they were saying was going to be put in the release ver.

Come to think of it I just checked the launcher and it allows you to select the HIGH and VH settings even though you have DX9 selected. This proves at least the launcher is forcing modes to be enabled that shouldn't be. I went in game and found you can only do Med like you said with DX9.

I would give DX11 on High a try though see if you get above 32fps, keep AA, AF & Vsync though. I would also try turning off High Quality Blur and Diffusion Depth of Field, if it isn't above 32fps these are DX11 specific and carry a very high cost in FPS. If that doesn't do it give the new driver and INF hack a try. The few ppl who have posted have said it has helped a lot on lower end cards.

You can't - the DX9 renderer only goes up to medium, to enable the other settings you have to use the DX11 renderer.

You can't - the DX9 renderer only goes up to medium, to enable the other settings you have to use the DX11 renderer.

To expand on that a little further, High requires Direct X 10, and Very High requires Direct X 11.

To use High, you need to select the DX11 Renderer even if you only have a DX10 card (odd I know, but that's the way BioWare decided to label it).

---

I have even more good news, with the 267.59 drivers I was even able to up the AA to 4x and 16x AF and still have 35+ FPS during a fight using DX10/High settings @1920x1080 on my GTX 260!

I thought I would only be able to use 2x AA but it seems I was wrong B)

These drivers really are much better! I no longer have to play using the DX9 renderer - I'm happy :P

Thanks for the info! I did not know HIGH was DX10, you are right it is very odd to label it that way.

So I've installed the drivers with the inf modding and unfortunately I am still experiencing painfully slow gameplay. Even MOVING around is slow, panning my camera. Its 1 FPS. I've used Fraps. Even the main menu on the initial start up lags. I have no idea what could be causing this. The game ran completely FINE for a full week. It was about 20-30 FPS. But then today it just started behaving like this o.O No idea what to do. =\\ It will even start up normally and then slow down about 5 minutes in.
