You should not expect a mere 220 to accomplish much, even at Medium. It's not intended to be any better than a borderline business card with aspirations, a "budget" approach to gaming, aimed at low settings or low resolutions.

@ vania: its 1366x768

@gorath: yup, i know that. But still, the lagging was quite exaggerated. I never experienced such lagging (however small) from games like mass effect 2, dead rising 2, and left4dead 2. thanks though

Just as a heads up, I'm having very positive experiences with the new 267.59 version drivers released for the GTX550 ti.

I run a single GTX470 oc and I went from 18-22 fps (beta v267.24) to 38-44 fps (beta v267.59) on DX11 + Very High with the same settings and in the same area.

Obviously these drivers are in beta and meant for a different card, so they require a modded inf file to install and there might be problems with them, so only use them if you know what you're doing. If you do though, then they seem to be worth a shot. :)

Info and links: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/300/index/6571278

Just wanted to confirm that these drivers also dramatically improved my DA2 experience.

Even on my GTX 260 I can now play DA2 smoothly with 30+ FPS (even during fights!) at 1920x1080 with 2x AA and 16xAF using the DX10 "High" mode - also, no more lag that was present with the 267.26 drivers!

Also, the 267.59 drivers are not beta drivers - they're signed/WHQL approved, however just for the 550 Ti/GTS 450 and due to the INI mod needed to get this running it warns you that they are not signed (despite the fact that they are).

System: Core i7 930 @ 2.93 GHz, GeForce GTX 260 896MB overclocked (700MHz GPU Clock/1509MHz Shader/1000MHz Memory) @ 1920x1080 resolution, 6GB DDR3 Triple Channel RAM (1600MHz) - Windows 7 64bit.

How? What settings are you using. I'm still not able to use high without it going to 16fps.

Also does anyone know if 267.59 drivers work with the 450GTS?

Almost any device that is stressed way beyond its designed limits will eventually have problems, including mere Chipset video chips, so when it comes to budget grade parts, you just can't push those as hard.  You should have accepted the limitations before this; now, from what you are saying, I suspect it will keep on with the current behaviors, getting still worse over time.

I could be wrong, of course, there may be some scrambled connection among the four softwares and the three or four hardware parts that are all involved in the graphics, but that's what makes graphics problems so complex.

Strange, that seems rather low to me. DA:O run just fine with gt 220 at 1024x768.
Game is poorly optimized, though. With medium settings I get 110 fps with gtx 570 in 1920x1080, so i won't be surprised if you have something around 20-30.

DAO and DA2 have seriously different minimum requirements, although the official Geforce 6600 GT really was far too slow, and a 6800 GS made far better sense:

Well, but gt 220 is enough to play dao on maximum settings in 1024x768. And it looks better, than medium in da2.

Try the new 267.59 drivers. Many people have reported seeing improvements even in High (so with DX10), as well as with DX11. Since you have a GTS450 you don't even need to use any modified files, because the 267.59 drivers officially support both the 450 and the 550 cards:

You can download them here:
www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7-winvista-64bit-267.59-whql-driver-uk.html

That's the UK/international install, because the US link seems to be broken.

PS: I posted a step-by-step how-to on how to upgrade to the 267.59 drivers and use the modified inf file here:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/300/index/6571278/2#6584005

It's recommended to uninstall the old drivers first and run a driver cleaning tool to get rid of lingering files, before installing the new drivers. I've described how to do that as well in the guide above.

Resolution is always the easiest adjustment to make when dealing with cards that fall below the recommended levels Vania. 1024 by 768 is definitely LOW resolution, so of course it can reduce the load enough to accommodate setting high image quality levels when the card is in between minimum and recommended levels. And then you have the really huge variations in how individual human sensoriums perceive the same thing.

@Vania and Gorath
What's weird though is, when i played the game just this morning. The lags were all gone (in all locations where i got the lags in the first place). My setting then was even high. However, when i played again this time, lags where once again there. It's like my game's trolling me. lol.

Anyway, can i use the nvidia driver people have been talking about in this topic on my gt220? thanks for all the feedback guys.

search for gtx 550 ti drivers, there will be 267.59. Download them. Then http://social.biowar...index/6578193/1 download inf file from there. you will need to change inf file somewhere in c:/nvidia

v267.59 WHQL Driver, 1920x1080, Direct X 11 Renderer, "High" settings, 4x AA, 16x AF, High Resolution texture pack enabled.

Firstly you need to completely ignore what anyone has told you about INI modding in your case, the 267.79 drivers were designed for the 550 Ti and the 450 GTS, there is no INI modding required for you as you have the 450 GTS.

All you need to go is go to http://www.nvidia.co...nload/Find.aspx fill in your card/OS details then download and install the 267.59 drivers.

267.59 have improved my FPS by 5-7 up to the low 30's. Not the greatest improvement, but I wasn't getting the severe problems others were.

Bug report
ASUS enForce 8800GTS; DX11 renderer
latest drivers and directX installed

On DX11 renderer (High graphic settings, as the card doesn't support DX11 itself, only DX10, tried to adjust the filters and such, no result) I've had a strange flickering on the action bar, and the edges of the screen, also, two crash-to-desktop events.
Also, some fire effect made some slight FPS drop there, while every other was much smoother.

Thank you, it actually did make a difference with those drivers. Bumped the fps up to the 20s with High which is good enough for me :)

Just installed the 267.59 drivers for my GTX 580 and it works a LOT better.

Note that my cpu is just a E8400 at 3.37ghz (duo)

High 4xAA 16xAF maxed everything : avg 50 fps (often tops at 60)
very high 4xAA 16xAF maxed except for DoF : avg 45fps (often tops at 60)

huge improvement over the previous beta 267.31.

Very interesting article on techspot (might already have been posted before, if so im sorry, ive been cross-reading so many threads/sites i cant remember where i originally saw it :P):

www.techspot.com/review/374-dragon-age-2-performance-test/

More importantly they updated all their earlier test results (which iirc were done with the 267.24 beta drivers) with results when using the new 267.59 drivers and the picture that paints is VERY different. See for yourself:

old drivers:
static.techspot.com/articles-info/374/bench/1920x1200_VH.png

267.59 drivers:
static.techspot.com/articles-info/374/bench/1920x1200_VH_update.png

I'd say it's not quite there yet, but it's a giant improvement for sure.

I'm struggling to understand how they get an average of 24 and 34 FPS (updated drivers) with a GTX 570, considering I get an average of about 6 when using very high settings at 1920x1200 with my 570!

Are you using the same drivers they are using in that article?

In the first screenshot they're using 267.24 (beta drivers for all cards) which improved the dx11 performance somewhat already and in the second screenshot they're using the 267.59 drivers for the 550 cards with a modified ini file so they can be installed on other cards as well.

If you're still using WHQL drivers which are officially 'out' for your card, then you won't see framerates that are anywhere near the ones in those benchmarks, as the 266 and earlier drivers are simply horrible for DA2.

If you don't want to go messing about with beta drivers or modified installer files then you can wait until nvidia releases these drivers for all cards. Hopefully that's not far off.

I'm getting very low framerates and frequent freezes on my system (both in combat and cutscenes). The game is honestly hovering at the edge of playability. I started on the highest settings (I'd downloaded the high-res texture pack) but have gradually lowered things down to medium (and have turned off all the extras, like antialiasing, completely). I still get lag and freezing. Running the game at 1680x1050, by the way, but I may lower this down to see if it makes things any better.

My system runs Win 7 64-bit on an Intel quad-core Q9000 (2 GHz) with four GBs of ram and a 1GB video card (NVidea GeForce GTS 160M). I've installed the beta driver. It's a dedicated gaming system with a built-in turbo button for overclocking, but in the case of DA2 this makes little to no difference. While the system is a laptop, and I know laptops get little official support (if any), it has run every other game I've owned on maximum settings without problems.
