I found a solution for my GTX580 system in the meanwhile. DA2 crashed every few minutes before I found out that it seems to be the factory-oc-setting of my card.

My MSI Twin Frozr II is OC from factory but there seems to be the problem.
Factory-OC:
Core-Clock: 822
Shader-Clock: 1645
Memory: 2138

I have set the clocks to the Nvidia default settings and all DX11 and DX10 games, including DA2 are working without any problems so far. I will do a burn-in test tomorrow and will let you know if it is realy the problem.
Core-Clock: 772
Shader-Clock: 1544
Memory: 2004

For all settings I used the MSI-Tool Afterburner v2.0.
Any Idea where i can report the problem directly, manufacturer, Nvidia?
I'm near sure that it is a problem of the driver control.

You are absolutely right. The ****in game crashes only if it is factory overclocked. I had the same crash problem on my Gigabyte GTX 570 OC (factory overclocked) version of the card.

Nvidia/manufacturer really need to do something with it. There are some titles which don't crash at all even with factory OC settings, but it seems this game does.

this is incredible, i got an factory overclocted Zotac 580gtx amp, reduced the mhz¨s to the zotac gtx580 specs, not only the crashes stoped in da2 it got more stable, i can now run the game in dx11, very high setting, high resulution pack and aa, af on 8x without any lag. its not just dragon age 2 thats benefits form this other games got bether preformance after this :D:D:D:D:D:D

Quite an odd thing has happened.. and it's really too late tonight for me to look into it (it is 3:40am my time right now)... I applied a mod that lets you run 2Xs as fast out of combat... suddenly I noticed my FPS was a LOT higher.

Normally I run on VERY high, No AA, AFx16, No SSAO, No Diffusion DOF, No Blur @ 2560x1600 and I avg about 30-35fps with my rig.. once I applied this mod, I'm now getting 50-55fps out of combat and about 30-35fps combat... I'm too sleep to look into the possible causes as to why a mod to speed run speed would give me such a huge jump in FPS... I did remove the mod... and my fps dropped back to what it was before.. I put it back in.. and boom major fps boost

I have no idea what the mod does to speed up the runspeed.. but everything seems sped up.. moving the camera, turning, etc are all accellerated. The mod goes back to normal speed during combat for "balance issues"

Here is a link to the mod:

www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php

it would be great if some people could test this and reproduce what I am seeing here. If this really does boost out of combat FPS, then that would suggest a lot of the performance issues has to do with the game itself.

I'm litterally about to fall asleep so I can't look into this further tonight

Were your framerates higher in combat with the mod installed as well?

No they were "normal" in combat. I only saw the fps increase out of combat. Since it is an out of combat only mod, this makes sense. I just woke up a abit ago, but my ipad2 just got here. So I'll be distracted for a bit and won't be able to look into this until tonight

Very nice I will have to keep this in mind. It sounds like though a driver problem with nvidia because I have the water cooled Evga 580's and they are OC with no problems. Going to keep that in mind, appreciate the info!

Just fyi EVGA likes to flaunt the cards speeds when you look them up so they are very easy to find and to compare to one another just go here

http://www.evga.com/...ts/prodlist.asp

Anyways the stock is 732Mhz GPU Clock Speed, 3800Mhz Memory Clock Speed
the Superclocked is  797Mhz GPU Clock Speed, 3900Mhz Memory Clock Speed

Core i5
4 GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD5850
Windows 7 64 bit.

I have the driver mentioned in the OP. DirectX 11 still doesn't work.

I cannot get past character creation. If I disable DX11 until I'm past that, then re-enable, then I can typically move around Kirkwall for a while until it crashes.
The crash is typically a full BSOD.

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.7Ghz
(Evga) Geforece GTX 580
Directx 11 w/ 3D
6GB Ram
1TB HD

Problem: With 'Very High' grahic setting enabled my fps is excellent and very smooth, but sometimes (usually in the top left corner) there appears pitch black pixels that are animated/move? leaving the area it goes away - why does this happen and how may I fix it?

Latest drivers, everything up to date. (Yes, so many say it.. it really is)

A friend looked into this issue and a fix for him or others was to reduce AA down to 4x but that didn't work for me =/ the game is still playable.. just a little annoyed paying for one of the best cards to date and having a problem like this. (Works beautifully for all my other games though)

I have the same problem. I installed the latest NVIDIA Beta drivers and now I can enable very high DirectX 11 setting with very hi-res texture pack along with all other visual effects at Full HD. However although I don't see a big performance hit I cannot enable AA without seeing those black blotches. It only happens with 3D spell effects if AA enabled. I don't care much about AA since I play the game on a Full HD TV with all visuals maxed out. But it is a bit annoying I agree. I could not even enable very high setting (DirectX 11) in outdoor areas (other than the city) before installing the latest Nvidia Beta Drivers. How they can make a DirectX 11 game which is incompatible with Geforce DirecX11 cards is beyond me :P. But it works just fine now. I guess I am lucky :): Though I must admit tesselation is minimally used in Dragon Age II (there is no big difference if you enable tesselation on top of the very high texture pack) and it works only for the outdoor terrain. So ne real tessalation support for DO II actually. Especially if you check the NVIDIA's tessalation demo pictures. Probabily not even Geforce 580 GTX can handle heavy tesselation with a visually maxed out game. We will see our real performance with Crysis 2 I guess.

My system:
Intel Core I7 950, 3.06 ghz. 4 cores plus 4 more with HT, with a total of 8 cores with 8MB L3 cache
4+4 8 GB dual DDR 1333 mhz Kingston Hyper-X RAM
1536 MB Geforce 580 GTX
HDMI connection, Full HD on 82 cm Toshiba 3035 TV
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

New drivers out today for nVidia: 267.84.

Drivers here: nVidia 267.84

You will needed a modded INF (unless you have a beautiful GTX 590.)

Link to Modded INF is Here.

To install it you need to extract the driver archive and navigate to the folder that is Display.Driver, then paste in there (overwriting the original file.)

Looking at 85-95 fps

1920 x 1080 x4AA x16AF
Very High
SSAO On
DDoF On
HQ Blur On
HQ Textures On

Normally I have 8xAA but apparently that is what triggers the black shadow / block bug in the corners of the screen in combat.

This is still not the performance I would expect from this title.  I would expect at least 120-150 fps, I just don't see it happening driver side anymore.  BioWare please advise.

Nvidia's apparant unwillingness to release anything for other cards is getting more frustrating than I can appropriately put into words. Especially since modified INFs are showing that they're obviously ready.

I downloaded in and installed 267.31 actually. It only supports GTX 580. Despite that I am having the AA problem.

Reads as:

  • This driver is identical to v267.24 except for a single bug fix for using GeForce GTX 580 with multiple monitors.
Other
  • Installs HD Audio driver version 1.1.13.1
  • Installs PhysX System Software to version 9.10.0514
  • Users without US English operating systems can select their language and download the International driverhere.

...nice to hear that it works for you as well. :) I wrote it Nvidia and MSI in the meanwhile. Also my problems in several games are fixed. Hopefully they will find a solution for it, in special the OC version is more expensive then the regular card.

BTW I think it could be also a chip problem. As I found out not all chips are usable for OC Versions. Maybe we got cards with a "defective" chip. It depends on the quality class of the chip. However I try to figure that out with MSI atm.

I just noticed these drivers, how are they compared to other drivers that you might've used, and which versions?

EDIT: Also a new notebook driver, 267.76 http://www.nvidia.co...hql-driver.html

This is really strange and frustrating.

I have an Asus N53SV laptop with a nvidia gt 540m gpu. Since no driver on nvidia's website currently supports this gpu, I have to use a modded inf.

Up until today I was using the notebook beta driver version 267.24 and DA2 DX11 was working. It was somewhat slow since this gpu isn't very powerful but I liked the image quality it provided.

Today nvidia released a whql driver version 267.76, for which again I had to use a modded inf. According to nvidia, this driver provided performance increases in multiple games for the 400m series gpu. The 500 series is basically the same as the 400 series so I updated.

Games like Shogun 2 and Crysis Warhead run better with this new driver. However, Dragon Age 2 no longer starts. I click play, get the splash screen, the screen goes black, stays that way for a minute or 2 and then just returns to the desktop.

With the previous driver, the transition from the splash screen to the Bioware logo movie was almost instant, I barely even saw a black screen.

My laptop specs are:
intel core i7 2630qm
6GB RAM
nvidia GT 540m 1GB DDR3
windows 7 x64
hdmi connected to 24 inch monitor/tv

running at:
1280x800 x4AF
DX11 enabled
high res textures enabled
ssao off
ddof off
hq blur off

Will always be windowed, after a little fiddling I get it to run full screen, but then.....

Game Runs but mouse is unable to click on menu items due to offset of some kind.

Also when running DX11 fullscreen @ 1920 x 1080 (16:9) the actual screen size is way bigger than the monitor, which makes it impossible to select anything at the bottom of the screen.

Can someone please help me out, or am I the only one with this problem.

When you first start up the game there should be an intro menu where you can set up configurations. When you configure the video options check off "full screen mode" or something to that effect. Then, before you exit the configurator (is that even a word?) make sure you select "save settings" or something like that. Don't exit without doing that. I'm sorry I can't give you precise directions as I am at work and going by memory. What size monitor do you have? Perhaps you are setting the resolution to a larger size than your monitor is capable of displaying?

I installed the 267.59 Nvidia drivers i can finally have the game at very high settings without the weird black patches and massive slow down that originally effected me before then. So far so good. The only downside now is im getting slight pauses in-between cut scenes ever since i installed the 1:01 patch.

I have a couple of data points. Framerate captured using FRAPS at a particular busy point in Kirkwall where I'd left a saved game that I copied between the two systems, but the framerate in the rest of Kirkwall was consistent.

Old PC -- ATI 5850, 11.2 drivers, Core 2 Quad @ 3GHz --> 35fps
New PC -- Nvidia 570, 267.24 beta drivers, Core i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz --> 25fps

(1920x1200, very high detail, no AA, 4x AF, depth of field, no high quality blur).

This is very irritating. Needless to say the "New PC" ought to run it better, as it does with every other game I've tried (it runs Rift nearly twice as fast for example). I'm starting to think I should've bought a 6970 instead, and even considering replacing the 570 with one: extrapolating from review benchmarks in other games, a 6970 should be achieving 45-50fps. I know Nvidia have a performance boost in the pipeline but can they make up that much ground?

Ouch!

The .84 drivers have no noticable FPS increase for me on my rig, but I've also never had artifacting issues either
