I switched to DX9, that stopped the crashing, but I'm still getting disgusting frame rate. Suggestions?

Specs:
Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 620 processor (2.6 GHz)
RAM: 6.00 GB
OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
*Video: ATI Radeon HD 4200
*Display 1: 19" ACER PnP monitor
*Display 2: 32" Panasonic Viera 1080p TV (non-PnP)
Game: Downloaded Version
Problem:
About 30 seconds into the intro battle, my game crashes.
I'm running it on low quality just to be safe.
Before crashing, i'm getting frame rate problems on either monitor, when in full screen or window mode.
Frame Rate is approx 3-12fps. Slow enough that I can count it.
I've updated all my drivers and followed the steps above, and it still crashed about 30 seconds into the intro battle.
What should I try next?
I'll keep searching the threads for now, but please let me know if you can help.
The problem is your Video card. Isnt Radeon HD 4200 an integrated graphics chipset? You will need to get a better video card to run Dragon Age II.

The HD 2600 Pro currently named as an official minimum seemed out of line to me, considering it's slower than the named Geforce 7900 GS minimum card, but an HD 4550 and the HD 2600 Pro are roughly equivalent, per that link I stuck in, to GPU Review's site. An HD 4200 Chipset video chip has about 30% as good of a performance as the minimum, again, while referring to the offically named minimum, which may not actually be good enough.
(Edited in) P. S. I hadn't looked clodely at the full comparison of the 4550 vs the 2600. I got ratios of 75%, 50%, and 67% twice on four of the key performance numbers.
Here's a comparison of this and other very Low-end options:

Almost a month and no fix? Nicely done.
QFT. It's absolutely astounding that people are having to edit INI files to install driver versions released for different cards and all sorts of absurd nonsense in order to play this game - and don't tell me it's entirely nVidia's issue either because I guarantee there are problems in your own code and optimizations.
This is really shameful, I'm sorry. I have loved BioWare for years and thrown my money at you (admittedly under different accounts before this) for a long time now. If you don't get fixes out ASAP and you focus on some horsesh*t DLC instead, you are going to drive lots of people towards TPB and Demonoid and you know it. It's not a threat, it's a fact.

My specs are:
Processor: Duo P8700

I'm having some problems downloading the 267.76 driver update for laptops and I'm not really sure why. I'm not particularly tech savvy, so maybe some dumbed down help would be appreciated.

Make sure you're getting the right type of driver for your OS. You might be accidently getting a 32-bit driver instead.

Edit: Nevermind, whenever I set the search for Windows 7 (64-bit) it directed me to the 32-bit one. I tried again and i got the correct one. Weird.

Nah I have a Superclocked 480 and have had no crashing issues in any games.
You should read the complete thread before you post. It fixed the problem for many others with a 5xx card.
It's kind of unreasonable to ask one to read a complete 52 page thread.

It's not all BioWare, but it's not all NVIDIA either. Both are at fault.

I began to get the black patches when I went from v267.24 to v267.26 on a GTX 570.
I'll try v267.85 later tonight and see if that helps.

Does downclocking the card fix the black patches on the top left corner during combat or just the crashes?

For most people, dropping the AA down to 4x fixes the problem for now.

Good news considering the 267.59 drivers generally give pretty good performance already.

I’m also one of the poor sods who are not able to play this game with DX11 and the best settings because the performance is abysmal under those settings. (GTX 460 1G Ram) Theoretically I’m capable of installing beta drivers, modding an .inf and so on but quite frankly: I invested money for this game and aside from the time I’m investing into the game itself, I don’t want to spend more time in tweaking the framework in order to get acceptable results. Think about all those casual gamers, that don’t have deeper knowledge about computers and how they work – what about them? Can you expect them to mod an inf? No. Hell even the installation process, with claiming preorder rewards and stuff like that is all but intuitive (as in where to enter which code and what to download).
My point is: We are all whining and ****ing about how consoles ruin everything for pc-gamers and such but I can’t blame anyone actually switching to a console. PC: You install. You redeem bonus codes. You install more. You start the game, make basic settings and get problems with black boxes, stuttering and so on. Surf the webz, look for solutions, keep installing more (drivers this time), mod inf-files and possibly get frustrated because it’s not working. Sounds horrible? It is!
Plus: Yeah, this game has a high replay value – sure. But I’m not the guy to replay games because I don’t have the time to do that. So even if there are some new drivers sometime in April, it would be way too late for me, because I’ll likely be through with the game and I’m not starting over just to have better looks.
I don’t care if this is mainly Nvidias fault. I paid Bioware for the game so I hold them responsible. If they think its Nvidias fault, I want them to point fingers and defend their customers and at least say something. And I would like to know, if those problems already existed during beta tests? I find it hard to believe that everything was in order during beta testing and no one had those problems. Because right now it looks more like a: ‘meh. We have problems. Let’s just hope they release new drivers asap and the problem is solved’.
Now I do like DA2 - I may not agree with all the game play changes but overall I enjoy it a lot and generally I consider Bioware to be the most high quality studio in the market. But the way this problem is being handled is a bit of a letdown. And my apologies if your staff is working hard to solve this problem but it would be nice to get a few more information than just a forum sticky saying ‘we heard about that’.
Sorry that became a longer than expected rant

I'm like the above poster. I don't replay games. So I'm tailoring my playthrough to avoid outdoor areas at first and have Crysis to play with while I wait for drivers (Crysis also a beautiful game, but also hard on my graphics card). At least I'm getting to sample the game and BioWare patches will not lag behind the nVidia driver release since we are field testing the game.
I prefer this early march release to an april release then waiting longer. Then in April we would have to wait for BioWare to patch problems that are only noticed in April because they waited to release in April when nVidia drivers where 100%. This way nVidia and BioWare should be releasing all fixes in April instead of BioWare releasing in April and patching in may. This early release means I just slows down my gameplay in march, sample the game, and wait until nVidia and BioWare release drivers and patches in April at which point I'll devote more time to the game. Think of it as a paid early viewing of the game. Patience is hard with an RPG due to the addictive nature of them, but its worth it to absorb it slowly if you can.
And consoles with DX9 are working with very well understood technology at this time. They are finally mastering it and getting all its worth out of the tech (as mentioned in an interview with the Civ5 designer). With PCs we get cutting edge tech but also cutting edge problems.
I just got into act 2. Beta drivers are fine for now. Story=awesome (much more cohesive than DAO). Mechanics=not so great (step back from DAO).
