I havent come across this problem for years. AGame which randomly locks up and crashes my whole Windows 7 system.

I can sit & play Rift or Lotro or ME2 or Crysis all day with ZERO issues. Yet DA2 reguarly & randomly kills my PC.

Coupled with the games other issues...what a way to kill a Franchise.

This game was released way to early, everyone knows this. I will not point fingers because i fear i might get banned or something. When i heard the release date was March this year i did fear that the game would lack in polish. Don't get me wrong, of what i have played the game is pretty good.

But the signs of polish is not as present as in Biowares previous games. DAO had its issues, but you could atleast run the game on max settings without constant crashes and horrid framerate. And that game is so big you got to expect it to have some bugs. I do not belive Bioware did not know about the performance for Nvidia cards prior to release. Because i can't belive a company would neglect such a big player base. They should rather have postponed the DX10-11 features with a patch like with Crysis 2 and Shogun2.

Bioware should just use the unreal engine from ME in their games. It looks great and runs so much better than this crappy engine.

Well the problems have been solved with the 270.51 driver. Still no crashes and the game runs at 40-60fps with everythin on and very high.

I just read the release notes for it 270.51. 461% performance improvement for Dragon Age 2. That should just about do the trick! I will surely give it a try when I get home.

I got double performance from the drivers. It is of course better, but not 200-400 % increase. If this is the best it will get i will be very dissapointed. Especiually since i can run most of the high end graphics monsters on max with ease.

They are probably referring relative to their last official driver release.
On my 560Ti, all settings at full or checked, I was getting 5fps or less on the last official non-beta drivers.
On these new drivers, same settings, I settle around 28fps (24 - 48 min max).  From what I hear most others were in the  same boat.  200 - 400% may actually be conservative for most of us.  But thats not too hard to obtain when you start as low as 5fps.

Funny thing is, Neverwinter Nights 2 still stands as the game that struggles the most with my video cards.  Its better now on my 560Ti than any of the other 5 video cards I ran it with, but still falls under 20 fps when there are a lot of lanterns or point source lights.  Neverwinter nights 2 still holds up exceptionally well visually.  Not all that far behind DA2 except for character animations which DA2 does exceptionally well.  But neverwinter's use of speed tree and trees that cast shadows from their canopy still trumps any shadows in DA2 for me.  Here's hoping DA3 will forge into speed tree territory and ditch the lego trees.  Although consoles and PCs alike might struggle with it if AMDs next big leap in graphics cards don't significantly increase rendering speed.

+1 I can run DA2 with maximum graphics settings on my GTX 460M

Smooth and Stutter free.

Kudos to the NVIDIA device driver team! :)

Mine wasn't even playable on the originally available drivers that were out at the time; at best I could get 7 FPS with tons of black and/or missing textures over the wireframe grid on the game's horizontal surfaces. So I'd say about a 600% increase for me in the framerate department, and about 1,000,000% better in the visual department, because originally, it was UG-ly!!!

There's been an update to the Catalyst 11.4 Preview drivers, I'm wondering if anyone has tried the most recent update? (03/29/11). I'll be installing them when I get home tonight, but I'm first wondering if anyone else has tried them.

I run it at 1920x1080, DX11 Very High, 4x AA, 8x AF, High-Res textures and everything else checked, I get around 35-40 FPS but there's heavy stuttering. This is on a 6870. If anyone has any info about the new driver set, please post it here!

The new nvidia drivers {beta drivers} fixed my frame rate issue completely, however my game still locked and crashed to desktop after an hour or so. The problem is still not fixed.

I get about 45-60fps now with AA and AF set at about halfway. Turning them up higher causes a drastic dip and doesn't really look any different. Much better now but still not perfect considering it's hardly pretty. From the early part of the game I'd say it didn't look any better than Origins, perhaps worse seeing some of the low-res armor textures, on the Ogre for example.

I had the same issue with my 560Ti. Someone here suggested downclocking and it worked! I have Gainward GS model which comes overclocked by default. Setting clocks to values in nvidia reference fixed stability for me.

Confirmed, the shadow pixels went away and FPS was excellent - game randomly crashes after using the beta drivers though.

Edit: Oooh 270 released??  Downloading it now! Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

The latest ATI beta drivers (11.4 dated 23/03/11) seem to have stopped the game locking up for me when loading a savegame or transitioning to a new area - although this might still crop up again later.

However, they've got a nasty artefact when Screenspace ambient occlusion is enabled, with a sort of contour-line effect appearing on the landscape. They also appear in cutscenes, but they're much less noticeable.

OS Vista 64
CPU i7 950 @ 3.7
GPU: 2x gtx 580s with beta 270.51
RAM: 6gb

I am having a bit of a strange issue with low sli GPU usage when running at 2560x1600 with high quality blur on. Running any other rez (even the highest 4:3 rez) the GPU usage is fine.

With all settings on max (8xAA, 16xAF, SSAO on) and "high quality blur" enabled the GPU usage on both cards drops to 50% and get a max fps of around 28-30fps, as soon as I turn ""high quality blur"" off the GPU usage jumps to around 90% and fps of 55+, i can even turn off high texture pack, turn off AA and AF and SSAO and there is still a usage issue if I leave High Quality Blur on.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Or have any suggestion on what could be causing this.

Thanks.

Those who are using the latest Nvidia Betas and are still crashing, check to ensure that your card is not overclocked. If it is factory overclocked, use EVGA precision to underclock.

I'm still getting crashes with the latest beta from nvidia, have down clocked my card to stock levels (GTX580) and no effect on crashes. This only applies to DX11, DX9 is fine. Bit strange and other games and benchmarkes with DX11 are running fine, its only DA2 with the issues.

FWIW - For those with dual GPU cards:

I wasn't getting past the character selection screen, had tried all settings but with no luck. I then went into my nvidia settings and disabled multi GPU mode- now it works great at all settings on high, including high res textrues, DX11, full screen at 2500x1600. I'm only a short way in (2 hours) but that's a heck of alot further than the character selection screen - all from simply checking a box in the nvidia CP to disable multi GPU :)

Kit:
Intel Core-i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
EVGA GeForce GTX 295 co-op (single GPU mode)
nvidia driver version: 270.51 (beta)
Win7 Ulti x64

Hope that helps someone else!

Oh well, the full system lockup on loading hasn't been fixed with the 23/03/11 ATI beta drivers :(. That plus the graphics glitches means they seem to make things even worse.

DA2 running with EVGA (Non-Overclocked) GTX 580 at max graphics, card running on default factory specs, using DX11 features.

DA2 DX11 - Running with 266 Drivers - Game is "Stable", Black shadow pixels appear around tessellation areas and FPS suffers.

DA2 DX11 - Running with 267 Drivers - Game is not stable and crashes to desk top - Tessellation corrected, FPS improved but not the best.

DA2 DX11 - Running with 270 Drivers - Game hasn't crashed on me yet (three hours of gameplay so far and going) - Tessellation corrected, FPS drastically improved and smooth. No problems, yet.

game on 5760x1080 with 2 580 working perfect, the only problem is that sometimes it crashes.
on fps i get minimum 35-45 so it's ok with the drivers...can we fix the crash problem?
