I would think my computer could run DA2 maxed out

I also noticed that in my taskmaneger it only used 328 RAM and wouldn't go higher then that

The GT 420 is a Scam with that much RAM.

www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

It only has 128 bit memory, so its bandwidth is far too narrow (at gaming graphics speeds) to use more than 512 MBs.

It is also comparatively slow to try to use for games, most certainly not "maxed".

 Alright, can someone help me?

I want to run Dragon Age II at AT LEAST 60 FPS, and currently in DX11, with everything maxed out it runs @ 45 FPS normally, and slightly lower during combat.

My specs are:

Intel i7 920
Nvidia 480 GTX
6 GB DDR3 RAM
750 watt Power Supply

and I run this game on a 24" monitor @ 1920x1080 resolution (the resolution I run every game at, either that or 1920x1200).

Please someone help me figure out which settings to turn down to gain the best FPS, while losing the least visual quality.

Thanks.

Might be a bit optimistic to want 60+ FPS, Nvidia drivers don't seem to be that good with DX11 in my experience, not on the 400-series anyway. 45's pretty decent IMO. I'd have thought that would be quite sufficient (faster than my system and DA2 runs smoothly for me) but there's a few things you might like to try:

Download the 270.51 beta drivers for your Nvidia card if you don't have them. I'm not sure how much they improve the performance of DA2 on 400 series cards, never bother with frame rate checks myself, but it's certainly far smoother on my system (using 460 GTX) than with the last beta release.

Other than that, I'd consider disabling the diffusion depth of field option. It doesn't add much IMO but you'll get at least a slight FPS boost. Might also consider dropping the resolution to 1280x1024 and 2xAA (there's seemingly issues with 4x or more on at least some card/driver combinations). Never noticed any real improvement visually with higher settings (not enough to justify the drop in frame rate anyway, but YMMV).

I'm not sure I understand.  I see you have a crossfire setup so assume you work with graphics cards regularly.  If not, then you need to go to the AMD site and download their latest drivers.  Check the original post of this topic for the recommended drivers for Dragon Age 2.

If I understand correctly, deleting the device from the device manager will cause the drivers to be automatically installed when you redetect the graphics cards.  I'm guessing windows would just force their basic graphics card drivers to be installed and not the latest from AMD.  I could be wrong. Never had reason to delete my graphics card from the device manager.

I have read the OP and then skipped to the last page, so I apologize if there is some earth-shattering nugget of information that I may have missed on page 37.  ;)

I, too, am suffering from the CtD/BSOD/freezing issues with DA2 on my gaming PC.  Specs:
- Win7 Enterprise SP1 32-bit
- Intel E8500 Core 2 Duo 3.16 GHz
- 2 x Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 in Crossfire config (11.3 driver set installed yesterday)
- 4 GB RAM

When it is actually working (for a minute here or there), it runs fast and smooth (I don't know how to check the framerate in DA2) with the exception of an occassional "hitch" (half-second pause).  I have tried it in DX11 or DX9 mode and the abends are about the same.  Immediately after switching to DX9 I was able to play for about 30 mins before it blue screened.  Interestingly, I have never had an issue with either DA:O or Awakenings.

The OP says to get the preview 11.4 driver set for ATI cards, but the actual ATI page says that's to fix DA2 issues "on ATI Radeon™ HD 5800 Series products".  Since I am running HD 4800 Series, I assume this won't help me, but I'll try it anyway (when I get home from work tonight).  Stay tuned for update.

I read the first couple of pages, then skipped to the end - where people were still complaining that they couldn't run the game well or at all. So here is my addition to the heap of c**p.

I haven't checked my fps, but it is sufficient for my needs, seems smooth and fast. However, the game crashes - constantly. Most frequently after saving or during/after changing zones. Sometimes, it crashes as soon as I begin playing. Sometimes it's a ctd, other's the game freezes solid and the screen is covered with small green pixels.

I have tried with and without the high texture pack. I have tried a range of settings, from 1680x1050 down to 800x600; with AA and AF at various settings including 'off'; on every setting from 'very high' down to 'medium'; and with ambient occlusion etc off at all times. None of these make any discernible difference - the game still freezes and crashes constantly. I also downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers after following the link on the OP - again, no difference to the freezing/crashing.

Here is my system:

Have you tried pulling half your RAM.  I would assume this is fixed now, but I seem to recall some issues with the 500 series videocards and more than 4GB of RAM.

Also, make sure you downclock your video card to reference speeds if it has a factory overclock.  This has been know to cause issues with DA2 on the old drivers.  May still be causing issues.

Might want to wait for the patch coming out this week however (1.02) before putting too much effort in.  It may fix some of your issues with little effort on your part.

I am sure someone already posted this nfo but ill reiterate as it was the single most helpful thing for me in terms of performance issues.  NVIDIA has released a BETA GeForce/ION Driver v270.51.  This driver contains specific fixes for DA2.  Details here http://www.geforce.c...les/r270-driver  I installed this driver last night and as advertised I went from ~10fps to ~40fps.  Im running a single GTX580, Intel 2600K, Asus P8P67, 16GB Ram.  Im running this at 2560x1600 4xAA 8XAF will everything turned on DX11 renderer, with the High Resolution Texture Pack installed, and very high set in the video options.  I use vertical sync turned on as i dont like the tearing so my game now runs at a liquid smooth 30fps.  When vsync was turned off however I got 40-50fps during my limited testing late last night.  It will go abit faster if you turn off the AA.  I dont know if these drivers are being endorsed by the guys at bioware, the worked perfect for me.  I am looking forward to the release of the 1.02 patch today as it has been stated to carry fixes for DX11 issues.

I'll get the patch as soon as it's released. In the meantime, however, I did some more testing.

I loaded up fraps and tested my fps - I'm getting between 50 & 60 fps, depending. So framerate is not an issue for me.  The crashes and freezes are.

I don't overclock my pc - nor is it factory overclocked, I was very clear on that when I had it built just last month.

However, several hours ago I tried one last setting change - and changed the renderer from DirectX 11 to 9. This also changed the graphics detail to medium and lowered/disabled several features.. I left the high resolution textures enabled. I have been playing the game for the last 3 hours at least - and it hasn't crashed once. Amazing.

Clearly, this isn't the best solution since the graphics are now less than great - but at least I can play.

So, if your problem is crashes/freezing rather than fps - it might be worth your while to try this too.

[Edited for clarity.]

UPDATE:

I had VERY limited time to mess around with this last night, but I DID get the 11.4 Early Preview driver set installed.  Even though I am running two older HD 4800 series GPUs in parallel (not DX11 compatible), I was able to "play" for about five minutes without a crash.  Inside the actual video settings menu in-game, I have it set to DX11, but I am still limited to High (Very High is greyed out - along with the DX11 specific features).  AA is set to 8x.  Things looked pretty fast and smooth for the duration of my limited testing.  More testing to come and, of course, I will apply patch 1.02 when it comes out today.

You may have already done this but update your Video Drivers to the newest that is available.  I dont kow for ATI but I do know they are BETA 270.51. for nvidia.  I have no crashing issues and never have, even on slightly older drivers under DX11

Hmm just applied v.102 patch hoping that dx11 and high res textures would now stop my machine crashing after 1 min gameplay - no joy, crashed after about 4 seconds of in-game. Have to ctl-alt-del and end the non-responding DA2.

Have played game through all the way with dx 9 and high res, no problems.

Have latest beta nvidia drivers, with gtx580, qx9650, 8gb ram, win7 64.

All others games are fine, can run heaven benchmark dx11 no problems.

Finally, a new patch. It was about time, wasn't it!? Installed it immediately and guess what: same horrible performance with everything on max except anti aliasing like like before. Forceware 270.51 installed. Gained +/- ZERO frames compared to version 1.00. That's just... ridiculous. Almost 5 weeks of waiting, for nothing.

You know what, Bioware? If I would handle my job like you do, I would be unemployed in no time! Even the stuttering without holding the right mouse button while walking still exists. Sorry, but this game is beyond remedy. Full stop.

Well I've got it running smooth at maxed settings with patch 1.02.
Don't know if it's a nvidia specific problem though since I don't use nvidia.

CPU: Intel Core I7 950 @3.07GHz
RAM: 6GB
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6970 2GB

or perhaps theres something on your end that could help.

maybe you should ship your system to bioware to test. they can't account for every single persons hardware build and software configuration you know...

also, patches do not magically come out of thin air. each one usually takes thousands of man-hours to build and test.

Well, for what it's worth:
Intel i5 2500, 8GB memory, Asus GTX580

12 - 17 fps on very high gfx, very high textures on version 1.01 with GeForce 266.58 drivers (newest available WHQL certified drivers)

Upgraded to DA 1.02 and installed beta Geforce 270.51 drivers:
1st attempt on high gfx, very high textures, v-sync off: Crashed after opening cutscene, about where control is first given to the player
2nd attempt on very high gfx, very high textures, v-sync on .. Game running solidly at 60fps, dropped to lowest of 31fps during the dragon cutscene at end of first level (during all the flame effects), and sat around 45fps in the crowd outside the first town.

Game just crashed while in a convo with the city guard prior to entering first town.

Dont know if the crashes have been introduced by the newer drivers or 1.02 update, because with the low framerate beforehand I never had the game running for more than about 2 minutes at a time.

It's a shame about the crashes, but at least the driver/game update combo should hopefully make it playable for nVidia owners.

edit:  Should add that all of this was done under DX11

I have one friend with 5770 and i3 with 4gb of RAM cl9 and he can play with all very high settings.
i have i5 with 6gb ram cl7 and palit gtx 470 dual fan and getting very bad performance in very high and low performance in high (with high textures), my forceware is the last stable version for my palit (266.70). I dont understand the reason that this game have problems with most modern card in market including people with most powerfull GPUs (580 =O)...please resolve this issues T.T.

Upgrade to latest GeForce drivers (270.51), I think they're only Beta because they're waiting on WHQL certification, I dont think it neccessarily means they're not stable (having said that, I am getting crashes in DA2, no way to tell if it's related)

I had problems in my SO with 266.58 wqhl (blinks and blackscreens) ,i will try to install 270.51 (was downloaded yesterday) but I do not expect it to work correctly with my Palit GTX 470. I will tell you some later.
Thanks.

Downloaded and installed the 1.2 patch - and also the latest beta drivers from Nvidia (270.51) - the game still crashes after only a few minutes of playing.

The only thing that seems to prevent the crashes is running the game in DirectX 9. Which really sucks.  At least, I hope that will still work after the patch.

Edit: After changing back to DX9 last night, I managed to play the game for 4 hours without crashing. At least that's something.

The new 1.02 patch has allowed me to play with all settings maxed on DX11 for about 15 minutes then crash. I played twice and the crashes were about after 15 minutes. Previously on the older 1.01 patch I could only play about 2 minutes before crashing but that was not with all settings maxed so this patch IS an improvement but not enough.. Both using the Nvidia 270.51 drivers so the 1.02 patch has made a difference and made it somewhat playable but could they extend play time to 4 hours so I can have a good session without crashing? I'm using a GTX 580 4gb ram.

So there will be a lot to do for Bioware, if everyone send their machine who have problems with the game like me... ;)

Oh, and by the way, the problems with DirectX11 were well known far before the game was released. And they still are. Bioware, ever heard of something like 'quality assurance'? Imho, they should have had enough time to get things working as they should.

Still can only play in Direct X 9. Really sucks having GTX 580 and can't use DX 11. Very, very bad. Not acceptable at all.
