Similar config but with i7 860 and similar sympthoms: runs ok in 1680x1050 with DX11 but there're some slowdowns every few seconds.Hyger wrote...

Works great (and smooth) for a few seconds and then there's a hiccup (that can last a full second). Constant.
One curious observation: CPU load seems to be much higher in DX9 Medium than in DX11 High.

Full DX11 settings, x2 AA, x2 Anistrop.
Dunno if anyone is having the same issue as me, but on my system, it will have random full lock-ups. To the point that I am unable to alt-tab. But I still get the music playing as if nothing is wrong.
I've tried running in windowed mode to see if it really is locking up my PC completely and it seems to be doing just that. There's nothing I can do except hit the reboot button on my PC.
Other than that, it doesn't seem to have any performance problem in DirectX 11. It runs fine until the random lock-up forcing me to reboot my computer.
DX9 runs fine though, so I'm playing in that.

When playing with DX11 it'll crash every few minutes, no matter the graphics settings. On DX9 it'll work just fine though. Shouldn't be an issue with my hardware, since its above minimum settings and when I check what version of DirectX I have, it says its 11(as of June 2010).
To chime in here....
Your ATI 3850 is only capable of DX10/10.1 IT IS NOT capable of playing in DX11 mode. You can see my post over at seven forums here - http://www.sevenforu...ame-issues.html Step #6
Basically.....
To play in DX11 mode three things must be true:
1- OS - Windows 7 is DX11 (software)
2- Game - Game MUST be DX11 (software)
3- Video Card - Card MUST be DX11 capable (hardware)
If all 3 items are DX11 you get DX11 mode. If any of the above isn't true, the game will fall to the lowest DX mode of the 3 items.
Example: If a game is DX9, but card and OS is DX11, you will only run in DX9 mode! You can switch these around but if one item is DX9 or 10, you will only be able to play in DX9 or 10 mode.
Again see the article I linked to.
Guys/Gals if your video card is NOT DX11 capable you're NOT going to get DX11.... regardless of the game. AND as I noted - DX11 is hardware based in the video cards...... it has to be built in!

my rig is not new, but shouldn't have these issues
Q9450 (not overclocked)
8GB ram (not overclocked)
Abit -- (680i) IN9-32MAX
GTX570 graphics
8800GT physX
Windows 7 64bit (all patched up)
nVidia driver 267.24(beta) => the beta is an improvement over the previous Jan 2011 driver
//beta fixed the ground issues when turning around
1680x1050
I'm having a crash issue when using High and Very High with DX11.
(have not tried lower settings than high)
problem occurs with VSYNC and withouth
with all setting of AA
with all setting of antitrophic or whatever it is.
I did not crash for 1+ hrs when running DX9
I will manually turn my GPU card's fan to 100%, (I'm not sure if my card is just overheating.)

dx11 High res textures, and high setting, 4x AA and the beta drivers seems to smooth things out for my GTX 480. I think the Very High setting is just bugged and unoptimized because it dips in the low 20's.
Pretty much same here. SLI 460s, but I'm still on latest WHQL drivers, and ambient occ. is on. Game is absolutely gorgeous, and playes great. Over 3 hours last night without a hitch! Color me happy

Very high option is still broken. Even with beta drivers.
And well, tessellation factor is obviously low. So that amd cards wouldn't be slow I, guess.
I am dissapointed.

I now am uncertain whether the Hi-Res Textures affect game performance. On DX11 High, my framerate is usually smooth, with a couple dips here and there. I no longer believe the Hi-Res textures cause it to dip. I'm going to make a save right before Flemeth's entrance at the beginning, to see if there is any difference. But for now I believe that the setting "Very High" is the main culprit.

if you run dxdiag ... you will notice that the pagefile is huge while running this game. OK, for me this is an issue as I have disabled virtual ram.... i have 8GB "real" ram.
When I run dxdiag it shows i have a I have 3680 MB page file availability. So does anyone know if this could be my issue? or is dxdiag referring to some other page file?
---
After the game is running the page file in dxdiag jumps to just about 4894 MB availability, but usage is 3294 MB. So is this a direct X issue of not handling RAM properly? In windows task manager RAM used only shows 2.14GB BTW.
Just curious if someone knows a lot about this stuff.

You're correct, but there's some confusion for Dragon Age 2.sygnus21 wrote...

There are two options for this game: DX9 and DX11. However DX11 mode also works for DX10 cards, but is limited to High settings in this case.
So, the topic name is confusing: are we discussing "DX11 cards" (Very High mode only) or "DX11 renderer" (High and Very High modes)?
I, personally, think that it is about the latter, so it is applicable to older cards that only support DX10.

Nvidia GeForce 560Ti
6 GB RAM
Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
Geforce driver v267.26 (beta)
Running online download version of DA2 Signature Edition, purchased from Direct2Drive
So after my game crashing and booting me out of the game numberous times while I worked my way to Kirkwall (yes, I haven't gotten into the game very far), I actually played around with my video settings while playing the same first hour of the game over and over (I'm getting a little sick of all the pre-custom char battle that I have to go through...
So, I get frame rates of around 20 fps when set to Very High and with everything turned up to Max and running on 1600x900. The frame rates bump to the 35-45 fps range on High with everything I can turn on for that setting. Predictably, the lower the settings the higher the frame-rate. Regardless of whether my rig should be experiencing the frame rates that I do, I'm not that overly concerned about the frame rate issue, per se. I may be a little disappointed that I can't play the game smoothly with all options turned on, but that's real life. The frame rates go up and down based on what I turn up, meaning I don't have enough horses to turn up all options for this game.
The bigger issue for me is the crashes. As I've said, I've turned up and down the various video options for DA2, and I'm finding that if I run in DX11 mode, even when I turn off all the settings that are disabled when running DX9 (meaning running in Medium video setting and remove everything except AA and Enhanced Texture Pack), my game still crashes. The crash frequency may go down (haven't really confirmed that, but anecdotally, it seems to...), but the game crashes usually in pitched battle at least at some point during my character's trip from Lothering to Kirkwall. On some occasion, the crash is so bad that the computer stops sending video images to my monitor, meaning I have to hard power down my computer to get it back running again. All other times, the crashes tell me the offending component that crashed are either dragonage2.exe, ntdll.dll, or d3dx11.dll (or somesuch).
I tested this while going back to Nvidia's latest non-beta driver 266.66, and it still led to crashes (and also much slower performance), so I went back to the beta driver.
Meanwhile I think I went through the trip to Kirkwall twice with DX9 with the texture pack on and AA turned up to 8x, and I never crashed once. All of this tells me that the removing of features help, but fundamentally the use of DX11 causes the crashes that I'm seeing.
Also on a sidenote, I did run the DirectX install that is on the install package for DA2 to make sure I'm running the proper DirectX version of files.

My Windows went as far as complaining that it's running out of page file space. Of which it was set up to use 8 gigs. HOW DO YOU RUN OUT OF 8 GIGS OF PAGE FILE SPACE? DOES THE GAME LOAD ALL OF ITSELF INTO MEMORY? Yes, it was the only thing running, thanks for asking. With the game shut down, the page file use is at 360 megs, according to Process Explorer.if you run dxdiag ... you will notice that the pagefile is huge while running this game. OK, for me this is an issue as I have disabled virtual ram.... i have 8GB "real" ram.

For those doubting: Page File is set up in your System Properties, depending on the OS version it's probably under the Performance... button, which opens a window where you want the page file options. I'm gonna go turn mine off to check if it helps, in the olden days of yore it did help some games (and some flat-out refuse to run without it despite having enough RAM to fit themselves in three times over).
